Based on the Statement of Ethics for School Administrators of the National Association of Elementary School Principals and The School Superintendent Association, an educational administrator’s professional behavior must conform to an ethical code. As a leader, the principal must keep in mind that the school ultimately belongs to the stakeholders; however, he or she assumes responsibility for providing professional leadership in the school and community. This responsibility requires the administrator to maintain high standards of professional and personal conduct. Moreover, it must be understood that the administrator’s actions will be scrutinized by all stakeholders. In essence, all school decisions should be based on the answer to one central question: How will this action improve the teaching and learning process? A former elementary principal followed an enlightened philosophy regarding decision making; when asked about this topic she would reply, “We can try anything to better the educational experience for students as long as it is not immoral, illegal, or unethical, and it is good for children”. Throughout my teaching career, I have often relied on this statement as a standard; it will be my intention to continue to do so as an administrator. To stand by your word means not backing down from what you have said, even though others may disagree. Alternatively, it means people can rely upon your word to fulfill an obligation or promise by virtue of your character; long ago, a person’s word and a handshake were used to establish business agreements.
