It is a big plus for an effective leader to cultivate the habit of actively listening to people when they are trying to communicate. One of the ways an effective leader can actively listen to the speaker is to paraphrase or rephrase what the speaker has communicated for better understanding and involvement. It is easier for a leader to understand how someone feels about a situation by just actively listening to the person talking. For example, a sad young woman will select words that show how unhappy she is when she is communicating. It is the responsibility of the receiver to decode the message received. Effective leader should be able to read body language like hand gestures and shoulder movements. One of the ways an effective leader can read body language is to maintain eye contact with the speaker. The act of maintaining eye contact gives an effective leader the opportunity to crawl into the skin of the speaker. The act of crawling into the skin of the speaker creates mutual understanding on how the other person feels. For example, when I bite my nails, it means I am under stress or pressure. Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
There are many areas of capabilities and each is geared towards the necessary skills required to be a successful communicator. As a primarily introverted person, I shy away from extraversion which can deter my people and communication skills. While I do not lack interpersonal and social (people) skills, these areas to consider for improvement. To be an effective leader, one must be able to communicate well within small and large groups. An effective leader must have effective social judgement skills. While I do not lack self-confidence or the other traits that are needed for great leaders, I do realize the need to enhance my communication skills significantly to become a greater leader. Ways to enhance and develop my communication and social skills as leader are to be more self-aware, to know and understand different audiences and their communication needs, to be clear and specific in communication efforts, and interpret body language. To be self- aware is to recognize and understand one’s beliefs, values, strength and weaknesses. By knowing and understanding my areas of needed improvement, I am becoming more self-aware and I can progress in the areas of weaknesses. Self-aware also means being in tune with surrounding and being able to analyze and understand my part in different situations. Additionally, being able to adjust and adapt communication to different audiences helps to increase effective communication, as deliver multiple messages allow for more communication efforts. It is impossible to pinpoint precisely the time when interest in leadership styles emerged. However a set of experiments conducted by 3 social scientist in 1938 is a good time to begin. Kurt Lewin, Ronald Leppit, and Robert White used groups of children to study different approaches to exercising control. Their classic study identified three types of control: autocratic, democratic, and laissez faire. These three types of control came to be known as leadership styles.
According to the report “Six leadership styles: selecting the right leader” (2016) coercive style is a one- way communication, where the leader give directions that needs to follow. This style is mainly used in a critical situation or when protocol needs to monitor. Alongside there is authoritative, where the leader makes a clear vision for the followers. Also, the leader with this type of style has the ability to win over the interest of his follower’s to walk in the same path (Six leadership styles: selecting the right leader, 2016). Hence, this is effective especially when a new employees started work and need guidance.
Many organizational theorists concur that existence of effective leadership is one of the important contributors to the overall organizational success. Leadership is defined as “a process of social influence by which an individual enlists the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a task or mission" (Chemers, 1997). According to Stogdill (1957) he defined leadership as the individual behaviour to which guides a group to the achievement of a common objective. Lee and Chuang (2009) explained an excellent leader does not only inspires subordinates’ potential but enhance efficiency to meet their objective in the achievement of organizational goals. Chen (2009) collaborates with these statements by considering that leadership is as process in which various behavioural approaches are used to guide employees to a shared goal. In the process the leader influences the organization members through a series of interpersonal interactions in which they seek to inspire the organizational members towards attaining organizational goals. Fry (2003) explains leadership to be the use of a leading strategy which
... they are surrounded by authentic leaders. They know their work is valued, their input is valued, and their time is valued. Thus, listening to others serves to be beneficial in multiple ways. Furthermore, actively listening to others improves a leaders ability to effectively manage team conflict and improve group dynamics. By listening to the team and understanding the issues that are occurring, a leader can provide control and guidance to the team through effective conflict resolution skills and in turn attain a more productive and cohesive team. Group dynamics continue to improve when utilizing great listening skills as a leader because team members become more engaged and talkative as they air out any internal information. The ability to listen will truly make someone a great leader for these reasons and may more as they all tie into everything you do as a leader.
Communication is key. The study of communication is far more complex and deeper than just the function of conversation. Communication takes many forms varying from spoken and written words, to the commonly overlooked nonverbal cues. In life, every person will communicate differently. Effective leaders, however, must learn to perfect these different forms of communication and be able to apply them in the appropriate situations. The success of a leader is reliant on their ability to communicate as a whole. The intent and concentration of this paper is to show how the importance of nonverbal communication affects the credibility and success of a leader.
In Michael Siegel’s interview published by the Washington Post, he identified four successful qualities in some of the United States most successful presidents. These qualities consist of the vision the president has for the presidency, the president has to have the wherewithal to implement his vision, the presidents must focus on few major goals at a time, and the president must understand the process and implications of decision-making. Based on the information from the class Wiki page, I will analyze a series of concepts that Han and Heith discussed in Presidents and the American Presidency and argue that President Trump only follows two of the three qualities of a successful leader. To inspire and influence others, a leader must have many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Jim Rohn, states, “ the challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.” (2010) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.

There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
Effectively listening not only helps me to understand others but has allowed me to give appropriate feedback when needed. To listen is critical because there are certain instructions a supervisor may be delivering verbally and to be a good employee to understand what is being said helps improve performance as a worker. Effective listening in the work place has also allowed me to learn how to maintain eye contact while speaking to the employer or a co-worker. In all aspects eye contact is a way to show the speaker that my attention is focused on what he or she is saying and having an understanding of the context. According Joseph A. DeVito 2012), listening effectively requires the skills to be understood and communicate effectively. We can only foster aid to others only if we apply ourselves to effective
