In Michael Siegel’s interview published by the Washington Post, he identified four successful qualities in some of the United States most successful presidents. These qualities consist of the vision the president has for the presidency, the president has to have the wherewithal to implement his vision, the presidents must focus on few major goals at a time, and the president must understand the process and implications of decision-making. Based on the information from the class Wiki page, I will analyze a series of concepts that Han and Heith discussed in Presidents and the American Presidency and argue that President Trump only follows two of the three qualities of a successful leader. First, President Trumps utilizes the bully pulpit to …show more content…
The president has to appoint professionals — not friends — to help develop and influence policy. A power that was discussed by the Wiki is the president of the United States is awarded the power and ability to appoint Supreme Court justices once a current justice retires or passes away, due to lifelong appointments. As a vacant seat in the court needed to be filled, Trump appointed Niel Gorsuch whom is a member of the Republican Party. It is important that a President’s appointments someone who can support and establish a political agenda long after they leave office. Furthermore, Trump must appoint a trusted solicitor general who will take part in implementing his vision of the presidency. President Donald Trump has nominated General Noel Francisco to fill the solicitor general position. Francisco will now oversee the administration’s legal strategy as it prepares for one of the most momentous Supreme Courts. The court will hear several cases pertaining to President Trump’s travel ban and landmark religious liberty and voting rights issues. As a president takes on this role of determining the solicit general, they must take into consideration how important the amount of power they are giving one person to influence our legal system and the vision of the presidency. Next, having a well-balanced staff and determining the best fit for the presidency is another important duty …show more content…
Trump discusses an important goal of his presidential agenda is implementing a fiscal policy. As, public awareness has increased on the importance of fiscal policy the president has become more involved with all aspects of developing an efficient policy. In the Wiki, a video is used that discussed president trumps fiscal policy goals during his campaign. Such as planning to slash individual income tax rates. Now that President Trump has taken office he has kept the same goals in mind that he mentioned in the video. He has made it aware to the public several aspects of his fiscal policy vision. Next, he has the goal of building the wall to combat immigration. As the presidential power and outreach has grown for this issue, so has the need for border security . Trump has planned to ensure safe and lawful admissions in to the United States by building a southern border wall to stop illegal immigration. This policy is another major topic he has discussed during his candidacy and something he has planned to focus on in his agenda. Lastly, Trump focuses on social policy of abortion. Although, the president does not have a lot of control over this type of policy, he can influence congress through areas of the bully pulpit. During President Trump’s campaign for the White House, one social policy he said he would sign into law was a bill that would end abortions after 20 weeks, gestation except
Denisco & Barker, (2016) discusses the foundation of leadership and the four conceptual pillars that comprise it. Understanding the leadership is a responsibility of an APN, the following final question was posed to Ms. Gordner. “Of the four pillars of leadership; professionalism, inspirational motivation, interpersonal relationships, and business skills, do you feel that one is more important than another, and why?” She responded,
The Honorable Jonathan Yates, former deputy general counsel for the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight of the U. S. House of Representatives, writes, “This lifetime term now enjoyed by justices not only contravenes the spirit of the Constitution, it counters the role intended for the court as a minor player in the equal judiciary branch of government. Term limits are needed to adjust the part of the court to the intent of the founding fathers” (Np). Judge Yates explains that the greatest powers of the Supreme Court did not originate from the Constitution or Congress, but from their own rulings (Np). The most prominent of which, was being Marbury v. Madison, in which the court granted itself judicial review, or the power to determine the constitutionality of legislation (Yates). Furthermore, the intended role of the court by the founding fathers was so small, that it did not have a home, or meet to hear any cases (Yates). An amendment to the Constitution removing the lifetime tenure of U.S. Supreme Court judges needs consideration by Congress. Lifetime tenure on the U.S. Supreme Court has led to four points that could not have been foreseen by the creators of the Constitution. The first problem resulting from the Supreme Court’s tenure policy is that judges’ are holding on to their seats, disregarding debilitating health issues. The second issue that has arisen from lifetime tenure is the use of strategic retirement by sitting judges to ensure a like-minded replacement. The third development resulting from lifetime tenure is the steady decrease in case decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court. The fourth and final effect lifetime tenure has had on the Supreme Court is an increase in celebrity status of the judges, which has le...
When it comes to United States Presidents, everyone has an opinion of each president’s effectiveness. It takes character and talent to hold up to the stress of the White House. One aspect of a leader that measures their effectiveness is their capability to handle a crisis; another is their ability to make decisions for the betterment of whomever they lead, while still taking in all opinions. One example of an extremely effective president that successfully used those qualities was Abraham Lincoln.
In this paper, I will be discussing someone who I believe to be a great leader, George W. Bush. I will be using material I have learned from my Survey of Leadership Theory class, such as preparing an analysis discussing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of George W. Bush. In addition, I will be discussing how three different leadership concepts discussed in my class also relate to George W. Bush with examples of each concept.
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
He is one of nine Justices, and has the major role of interpreting the Constitution. This allows the Supreme Court to strike down any law passed in the country if, in the view of the Court, it is not constitutional. (Burns, 371-372) The Constitution is very ambiguous in the wording and gives the Court considerable room in the interpretation, thus giving It power.
Political scientists have continually searched for methods that explain presidential power and success derived from using that power effectively. Five different approaches have been argued including the legal approach, presidential roles approach, Neustadtian approach, institutional approach, and presidential decision-making approach. The legal approach says that all power is derived from a legal authority (U.S. Constitution). The presidential roles approach contends that a president’s success is derived from balancing their role as head of state and head of government. The Neustadtian approach contends that “presidential power is the power to persuade“ (Neustadt, p. 11). The institutional approach contends that political climate and institutional relations are what determines presidential power. The last approach, decision-making, provides a more psychological outlook that delves into background, management styles, and psychological dispositions to determine where a president’s idea of power comes from. From all of these, it is essential to study one at a time in order to analyze the major components of each approach for major strengths and weaknesses.
The strategic model acknowledges that judges seek to achieve policy goals, but it also acknowledges that they are subject to certain restrictions in doing so. Since they cannot act accordingly to preference, they must act strategically to achieve their goals given by the restrictions. It argues that like politicians, justices make their decisions based off other’s decisions or make their decisions while trying to determine how another person will react from it. This decision style says justices would base their decisions on the influence of other justices.
Richard E. Neustadt, the author of Presidential Power, addresses the politics of leadership and how the citizens of the United States rate the performance of the president's term. We measure his leadership by saying that he is either "weak or "strong" and Neustadt argues that we have the right to do so, because his office has become the focal point of politics and policy in our political system. Neustadt brings to light three main points: how we measure the president, his strategy of presidential influence, and how to study them both. Today we deal with the President himself and his influence on government action. The president now includes about 2000 men and women, the president is only one of them, but his performance can not be measured without focusing on himself.
..., infrastructure investments, and direct aid to hard, pressed states and cities. He says all of his goals to fix America would take just one term, it may take two terms, so change would slowly and done right.
Immigration is an immeasurable problem here in the U.S., Trumps outlook for this issue states “They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists,” Trump said of undocumented Mexican immigrants while announcing his candidacy last June. Building the border stronger end immigrants and refugees who don’t through rigorous vettings.
Examining Trump’s rhetoric and past actions, it becomes clear that Trump’s ability to be the leader of America, especially in today’s already heated world climate, becomes questionable. When even the members of his own party refuse to endorse him and claim that he is not qualified to run a country, the general public needs to sit back and question his integrity. In Trump’s past, he has proven to be an insensitive, racist, greedy business man. Why would he prove to be any different once elected to office?
As a result from extreme hard work and perseverance followed by an unmatchable drive to succeed, Donald J. Trump has earned the right to be known as a multi-billionaire, real estate icon, and President of the United States of America. Reflecting on his life, he has faced many challenges and overcame them all. To understand how he rose to success and his journey to the top of the kingpin, it is important to recognize how he saw the american dream and pursued it. Today, many recognize him as the president but very few can fully grasp all that he has done in his life. From his start as a real estate mogul, to his impact on media, there are many questions as to how he became so recognizable today.
...appoint Justices to the Supreme Court with a two-thirds vote approval by the House, has been turned upside down. Mitch McConnell, a senior US senator, has prevented Obama’s liberal appointee, Merrick Garland, from even being considered. The refusal to hear from or possibly even consider Obama’s nominee is a bold move by the Legislative branch to gain back lost power from the executive branch. In Federalist Paper No. 51, Madison writes, “In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next glace oblige it to control itself.” It is the Constitution 's founders who tried to inhibit the abuse of power, but the executive branch has continually stepped over its boundaries, and now the Legislative branch is following in the presidential footsteps.
