Communication is an important part of nursing practice, with in the code under the domain practice effectively its states that nurses must communicate clearly and respond to an individual’s communication needs, providing help and assistance where needed using a range of communication skills such as verbal, nonverbal methods, taking in consideration a person’s ethnic and culture background, ensuring that the person has clearly understood the information received. Holloway and Wheeler (2013) explain that qualitative research is a way of Inquiry which centres attention around the way people see their experiences, and that researchers use this to interpret a person’s behaviour and how they feel, meaning that studies are carried out where the researcher and the participants understands the views, usually using an interview process with groups of individuals this is also supported by Wisker (2009).

Qualitative research aims to gather information from data collection methods and transform it into written words. Such as transcribing recorded interviews, taking field notes from observations, using words to outline images (Denscombe, 1998, p. 174). On the other hand, quantitative research aims to gather information from data collection methods and transform it into numbers. Such as analysing conducted surveys and pulling numbers to transform it into statistics, tables and graphs (Denscombe, 1998, p.174-177).
Research can be quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative research is objective and involves measuring the phenomena under investigation. Qualitative research is subjective, explores experiences and feelings, and involves the recording of phenomena that cannot easily be quantified (Toates, 2010, pp. 5-6). Both are empirical since they involve data collection (OU, n.d.).
