Communication is the establishment or a give-and-take of thoughts, ideas, emotions and understanding between a sender and a receiver. It is essential to building and maintaining relationships in the workplace. Some highly productive and dynamic organizations are distinctly different and striking due to their excellent skills in communication. Jillian Rodd (1998) states that, “Successful leadership in early childhood field is a matter of communication.” (p. 31). In any organization including kindergartens and childcare centers, a lot of communication is taking place in various ways. Communication happens in various ways: verbal, written or non-verbal. Information flows forward, backward and sideways. This flow of information is referred to as communication. Communication channels are the ways in which this information flows within the organization and with other organizations. In my kindergarten, there are various levels and sources of information. Internal sources of information are the teachers, staff, the documents in the center regarding policies and curriculum and the staff handbook whereas external sources of information are the parents, families of our students, ECDA. Information obtained from these internal and external sources can be written or verbal. For a smooth information flow it is important that an efficient communication channel is in place. Through face-to-face or phone conversations or a memo, information is transmitted from the management to the supervisor and then to a teacher and vice versa. Written reports from teachers flow upwards. A formal communication channel is the school’s newsletter, which gives the staff, teachers as well as the parents a clear idea of the school's activities.
