When the dress code was created its purpose was create a safe, distraction free learning environment similar to that of a work place. When used properly a dress code can benefit a community in a positive way. An example of this in October of 2015 The US Department of Education conducted a survey of inner-city schools that recently switched to a strict dress code. They found that the policy has helped to minimize distractions in class by 81%. But a more important statistic caught their eye. Overall crime in the communities committed by minors had dropped by 90%, suspensions by 93%, and fights by 60%. Sexual assaults decreased but only by 46%. It was close to one of the last days of fifth grade. I was eagerly talking to my friends about summer plans when I was interrupted by my teacher tapping me on the shoulder. “You need to go to the office,” he said. As I walked to the door, confused, the other fifth graders made calls of “you’re in troubleee”. On the way to the principal’s office, I wracked my brain for possible things I may have done, but I came up empty. What could I possibly have done? Apparently, my crime was my Justice Skirt. I had violated dress code by wearing a skirt that didn't reach past my fingertips. I had to put on leggings, and then sent to the school guidance counselor’s office, where I was advised that my outfit was distracting and inappropriate. Unfortunately, experiences like mine aren't uncommon. Young girls are sent home from school, banned from dances, given detention, and even suspended for dress code violations. The impact of this on women has been closely studied by psychologists. Experts worry that dress code policies that single out and humiliate girls for wearing “revealing” clothing, promotes sexual objectification and tell young women that their access to learning is less important than remaining modest. When we tell young girls that their shoulders and stomachs and legs and arms are inappropriate, distracting, and even offensive, we are teaching them that their bodies are made to be evaluated by
