Dress codes regulate what can be worn in certain places, such as schools and facilities. These codes are controversial where ever they are enforced. People tend to think that the government does not have the power to tell them they cannot wear certain articles of clothing and the fact that some schools do it can throw people into a fit. Some people believe that dress codes stifle personal expression, that a dress code is the same thing as a uniform. Many people do not remember that individualism goes beyond clothes, and that a dress code will help kids to be more than the clothes they have or do not have. Dress codes allow students to set themselves apart from others by their actions not their appearance.
One case in particular is brought up in court for a possible comparison, a possibility that an allusion could be between could be made between Tinker and whatever other case. In 1969 Tinker v. Des Moines I.C.S.D., three students were suspended from school for a form of visible protest. They showed their opposition of the Vietnam War by wearing black arm bands. The students said their first amendment right of expression had been violated, the Supreme Court agreed (Wilson 4). This is one of the only cases where the students are right and are standing for something bigger than themselves. There are many court cases that have shaped the rights of students and minors, one being Tinker, and another being Ginsberg v. New York. In Ginsberg v. New York it was decided that the state can restrict what minors can be subjected to, so that they are not subjected to anything obscene or unhealthy for minors (Wilson 4). One main reason public schools have uniforms / dress code is because in 1996, President Clinton allowed the school uniform movement and said, “If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms.” This gave schools the power to control the students with dress code. A few pros about having dress code in public schools are prevention from formation of gangs, identify intruders, resist peer pressure, and take away social barriers. But the cons give more reasons on why not to have dress code. Some are violation of freedom of expression, “Band-Aid” on school violence, bully targets, financial issue for certain families, and difficult to enforce. Dress code can vary from a button down solid polo with a tie, to solid colors, navy / khaki pants, to any polo shirt without offensive print / sayings and unholy jeans. Dress code also can exclude tattoos, baggy clothes, holes, scarves, leggings, strapless garments, and visible piercings (except in ear).
Every year parents, students and teachers argue about the issue of applying school uniform, and if it is going to be put into effect or not. Each year, school dress code is being pushed away. Year after year, to help stop violent behavior and encourage order in schools, dress codes are applied. Does the fact of students having to wear a certain dress code reduce the violent behavior and encourage order in schools? (“The Controversial School Uniforms and School Dress Code Debate”, 2008). Research shows, that dress code policies may increase the chance of a child safety in school by a very low percentage, but that still affects the child in a positive way (“Do uniforms make schools better?”, 2004).
Dress code is put into place to keep students from being bullied for how they dress and how some people may treat them different depending on what they wear. There is a lot of evidence that show students losing time in the class room because they are too worried about there personal apparel. David Brunsma, a sociologist who wrote Uniforms in Public Schools: A Decade of Research and Debate in 2005, says,

One of the most controversial topics revolving around schooling is the weather students should or should not wear uniforms to improve academic and social behavior. Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. The assertion by supporters of school uniforms that the introduction of school uniforms will significantly decrease criminal behavior and bullying amongst students is only partially true. Schools that experienced a decline in the criminal behavior or occurrence of bullying often overlook the effects of other environmental factors in their reports on the effectiveness of school uniforms. When examined closely, it was found that several schools actually implemented a series of additional policies in the time period shortly before or simultaneous to the adoption of school uniforms. A notorious example of the supposed benefits of school uniforms is the Long Beach Unified School District of California which greatly advocated the effect that the induction of school uniforms had on the schools in its district. However, after extensive examination, a study conducted by Drs. David L. Brunsma and Kerry A. Roquemore at the University of Notre Dame discovered that the conclusion reached by the district was faulty.
