Throw Me A Bone Whether a person is driving down the highway, watching television, or reading a magazine, he or she is bound to come across advertisement. With technology’s rapid advancement, marketing and advertisement are pulling out new tricks to try to keep up. One of the many ways that advertisers try to reel people in is by appealing to their sense of humanity. I will discuss two dog food ads that make an attempt to do so. These ads try to represent pets like children. People should want the best products out there for their kids and pets. Both ads picture dogs, natural colors, words in large font, details in small font, and a smaller picture of the food with the company’s slogan in the same bottom corner. After analysis of the components of these ads, their mutual strategies can be seen. The Nature’s Recipe ad proved to be more effective in the magazine by using these strategies for several reasons. The Nature’s Recipe ad shows their main points in a larger font where people are likely to read them instead of in a smaller font where people may skip over them like Iam’s. The Iam’s dog seems to be questioning and confronting the reader, where the Nature’s Recipe dog evokes a relaxed, happy mood in the reader. The attempt to show faults of other brands through the comparion on the Iam’s ad may lead readers to believe that Iam’s is simply trying to show they are better than others. Nature’s Recipe doesn’t put other brands down and simply states facts and tells about company tradition. The Nature’s Recipe ad also would not offend any large group of people with their wording. Back when the times were different the old ad would have been flawless, but all and all the newer ad is a much better choice. The newer ad had a perfect focal point that caught the viewer’s eye. The plot of the newer ad had superior details that made the ad better than the old one. The general feeling and mood is also an abundant aspect of the newer advertisement. Selection of elements is another aspect that the newer ad has better than the old advertisement. The new advertisement is systematized better than the old advertisement. The audience is the aspect that makes the new advertisement enhanced than the old advertisement. Although the old advertisement has many great aspects, the newer advertisement has a better focal point, action, general feeling and mood, selection of elements, and audience.
Advertisers all have one goal in common, that is an ad that is catching to a consumer’s attention. In today’s fast paced society there are so many selling products and charities. As I exam the advertisement for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (ASPCA), I will show how they use the pathos, ethos, and logos – also known as Aristotle’s Theory of Persuasion.
Advertising has became a race, a race of passing information to customers in order to change their buying decisions. Because of that, it is difficult to keep the content of an advertisement true to the fact. Facts or benefits of a product are often exaggerated in modern advertisements. Brands create these new images of the product to expand the role of their actual service.
A strong healthy dog is pulling a wagon of a pretty bag of dog food that looks healthy and tasty. The dog food sets perfect and looks great in the wagon. The little puppy is pulling this big wagon of dog food up a steep winding road, to show his strength from eating Beneful dog food. The wagon with the dog food in it says “Incerdibites Bring out the incredible in your small dog. The advertisers attended audience is anyone who owns a small dog. The ad also says “it’s not the size of your tail it’s how you wag it. That statement is saying even though it’s a small puppy. It’s how they wag it by being happy if they eat the right dog food. This ad uses a lot of detail and color, which really makes it stand out. They use a very pretty back ground setting very dark green grass, a dark blue sky, with a pretty yellow sun, and clouds, a very pretty tree that’s very colorful and destruct! The diet coke commercial uses pathos to persuade us. It's using pathos by showing a famous person to convince you. But in reality, Taylor swift doesn't drink diet coke when writing one of her songs. Sensodyne toothpaste commercial uses logos to make you think a little more logical. It makes you think more by showing a ¨dentist¨ to convince you that what he's saying is really true. The commercial wants you to think its trustable just because its a dentist so you could buy it to cure sensitive teeth.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
Lastly, Fancy Feast used model placement much more effectively in their advertisement. The white cat at the bottom of the page is looking up at the bowl of cat food at the top of the page. This alludes to the fact that the cat really wants the food, and this appeals to a cat owner effectively. Cat owners want their cat to like the food they are eating, and this advertisement accomplishes that nicely. On the other hand, Sheba’s advertisement placed the cat in the middle of the page, which did not work well. Also, the cat does not seem to care about the food in the bottom left

Many of PETA’s ad campaigns are related to sexuality, violence, discrimination against how people look, and the dominance over women. There are many pro-vegetarian and pro-vegan ads that do not degrade women and still are persuasive. Based on Kilbourne’s argumentative points, PETA ads are inappropriate and violent. Although many ads are degrading to women, some ads for vegetarianism are family friendly and are acceptable for publishing.
I have chosen two advertisements that look different, but are selling the same products. The brands have different perspectives and different audiences. One is a Durango boot advertisement and the other is an advertisement for Ariat’s line. The Durango ad is a picture of two people, a man and a woman, on red rocks like the ones in Arizona and New Mexico. He signifies that he is happy and eager to eat a Lunchables. The food coming out of the Lunchables symbolizes the actual food someone would eat if they were to get the Turkey and Cheddar cracker snacks Lunchables. It relates to the Lunchables because it is a real representation of the inside of the box. The paint and paintbrushes symbolize creation and fun. They relate to the ad as a whole because they represent the creation of making your own lunch with a Lunchables, which is one of the reasons why the Lunchables are so successful.
