Advertising is as old as civilization and commerce. In Latin, advertise means "to turn toward.". The purpose of advertising may also be to reassure employees or shareholders that a company is viable or successful. Egyptians used papyrus to make sales messages and wall posters. Commercial messages and political campaign displays have been found in the ruins of Pompeii and ancient Arabia. Lost and found advertising on papyrus was common in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Today, businesses beckon potential customers with attractive business signs, pamphlets, brochures, billboards, radio advertisements, TV communications, email advertisements and many other advertising tools.
For most companies, advertising can be a costly affair. On the one hand, customers are getting more information about new products, goods and services. While, on the other hand, it has to be effective, noticeable and remembered long enough to make potential customers into actual ones.
Advertising has became a race, a race of passing information to customers in order to change their buying decisions. Because of that, it is difficult to keep the content of an advertisement true to the fact. Facts or benefits of a product are often exaggerated in modern advertisements. Brands create these new images of the product to expand the role of their actual service.
In order to win the race, brands sometimes exaggerate the result of their product to win more customers by using external tools or software. In the digital world everything can be done to a photo, and sometimes it changes the meaning of the image. Have you ever seen an advertisement for a product and could immediately relate to the subject or the product in that advertisement? Companies that sell products are always trying to find new and interesting ways to get buyers and get people’s attention. It has become a part of our society today to always have products being shown to them. As claimed in Elizabeth Thoman’s essay Rise of the Image Culture: Re-Imagining the American Dream, “…advertising offered instructions on how to dress, how to behave, how to appear to others in order to gain approval and avoid rejection”. This statement is true because most of the time buyers are persuaded by ads for certain products.
A person is subjected to numerous advertisements throughout their everyday lives via television, applications, radios and the internet. Due to the massive numbers of advertisements seen by the public, advertisement designers pose manipulative tactics known as propaganda techniques. As seen in the article “Propaganda Techniques in Today’s Advertising,” the author Ann McClintock states and lists the seven tactics of propaganda used and seen unknowingly in common advertising. McClintock shares “One study reports that each of us, during an average day, is exposed to over five hundred advertising claims of various types” (McClintock 205). This factor causes advertisements to incorporate propaganda into their selling of products. Two advertisements which are composed for opposite audiences do not only contrast but are similar in the form in which they are portrayed to the audience.
The world we are living is a fast paced ruled by the media. We are surrounded by images of, perfect bodies, beautiful hair, flawless skin, and ageless faces that flash at us every day. These images are constantly in our minds throughout our lives. Advertisements select audience openly and target them with their product. The advertisement is implied in order to be like the people in the advertisements you must use their product. This approach is not new to this generation, but widely used today. The advertisements grab people attention and persuade them with the appearance of beauty and happy women that looks sophisticated to people eyes.

Analysis of an Advertising Campaign We are swarmed by advertising. Companies constantly battle to compete for the sale of their product. Adverts appear in every form of media including radio; television; Internet; billboards; newspaper; flyers and magazines. The advertiser wants us to buy their product above their competitors. The basic aim of advertising is to convince the target audience that their product is the best in the field and superior to the other products of similarity.
Advertising generally tries to sell the things that consumers want even if they should not wish for them. Adverting things that consumers do not yearn for is not effective use of the advertiser’s money. A majority of what advertisers sell consists of customer items like food, clothing, cars and services-- things that people desire to have. On the other hand it is believed by some advertising experts that the greatest influence in advertising happens in choosing a brand at the point of sale.
We live in a world where we are surrounded by advertising everyday. We see them in magazines, on television, websites, and billboards. If someone wants to get your attention for their product, there is many ways to get you to see their advertisement. However, they have to be creative in ways to get your attention or else you’ll just pass it off as another boring ad. Companies sometimes have to be very creative with what they are trying to sell in order to make the product stand out above the rest.
The technology of today has allowed for advertising to reach every corner of our lives. Commercials show on the television, pop-ups and sidebars are on your favorite website, and in the games you play on your phone. Noël Sturgeon and Jean Kilbourne both look at the effects that advertisers use, with Sturgeon it is nature used in ads, and Kilbourne focuses on women.
Advertising is used in all aspects of everyday life, in magazines, newspapers, billboards, television and radio to mention but a few. They aim to show their product to be bigger, brighter and better than any other product on the market. Consequently advertisers use colour, text, images, language and layout to fight for the reader's attention, so that they can influence the viewer's opinion of their product and therefore persuade them to buy their product rather than any other.
Effective advertisements are advertisements that help the advertiser to reach its goals (Doyle& Saunders, 1990).
In addition, effective advertising can keep a consumer’s mind fresh about the image of a brand, which develops the trace of the memory where consumers have to choose between two or more products. Moreover, it may change the product quality, create new, well-designed and elegant product and change consumers view towards the product. The Illusion of Advertisements Advertisements are pieces of art or literary work that are meant to make the viewer or reader associate with the activity or product represented in the advertisement. According to Kurtz and Dave (2010), in so doing, they aim at either increasing the demand of the product, to inform the consumer of the existence, or to differentiate that product from other existing ones in the market. Therefore, the advertiser’s aim should at all times try as much as possible to stay relevant and to the point. The advert alongside is simple and straight to the point. It contains very few details but extremely large content with the choice of words and graphics.
