Discrimination Based On Bias
For hundreds of years, racial discrimination has been occurring in our society affecting families and underprivileged kids. Therefore, the racial slurs and the actions towards one another is based off bias, where we grew up and how we were raised as a child individually. From past experiences, to our current lifestyle, there will always be a discriminate person or group protesting and starting new revolutions because of the hatred and undoing actions that have occurred in our past society. Racism and bias opinions are understandable because they derive from from a person’s cultural influences, exposure to dominant racial organizations, and the tendency to conform to expected stereotypes.

For example, say that in a perfect society everyone was treated the same, no racial differences or inappropriate name calling being used. But then a black kid starts acting “ghetto” and all cool as if he is more superior than someone else. How do we respond to this? It is annoying, offensive, and can hurt different people. From here, we create different opinions on this one person who decided that no one is better than him/herself. Now this one expectation that we have towards this one person is pointed towards other people that have nothing to do with this situation. The act of one person can change the whole perspective of not just a family, but of a race too. To me, this is where all of this name calling and separation of race begins, because one situation in our past defined someone else 's legacy. So with these different stereotypes occurring in our community, we can see that different biases effect the way people see and treat other people, for instance, in a court of
People believed that the darker the pigmentation, the poor and less powerful one is. When the African Americans, Mexican Americans and Asians migrated to the United States, the belief that darker skin tone holds less power inaugurated. Although in 1955 the Supreme Court outlawed segregation, and introduced the idea that “all men are created equally”, we still experience discrimination, racial, prejudices, and stereotyping comments today (add citation). In a symbolic interactionist perspective, according to the Sociology textbook, prejudice is a “belief about an individual or a group that is not subject to change on the basis of evidence.” No matter what evidence, proof you provide their opinion wouldn 't change. Like the Sociologist Zygmunt Bauman said “ Man is before his acrs; nothing he does may change what he is.” Discrimination, stereotyping and stigma are almost the concept, but the main difference is discrimination is the “unequal treatment of individuals on their basis of their membership in a group.” Where on the other hand, stigma is “ An attribute that is deeply discrediting to a individual or a group because it overshadows other attributes and merits the individual or group may possess.” And Stereotyping is more of “generalization of a set of characteristics to all members of a group.” Stereotyping is very common in everyday life, for example, when I’m sitting in my car alone in a parking lot while waiting for my parents to finish shopping, if I see a group of African American guys, I will lock my doors and make sure all the windows are up. Or even when we the teacher announces that only “one” persona got an A on their exam, and we all are more towards looking at an Asian person, because they are noted to be hardworking and smart. Furthermore, race has always been a serious matter in the Supreme Court and other government administrations, but they fail to recognize the issue. The injustices that minorities had to deal with in the past are the same inequalities that minorities, especially African Americans, still have to face in today’s society.
Discrimination has always been there between blacks and whites. Since the 1800s where racial issues and differences started flourishing till today, we can still find people of different colors treated unequally. “[R]acial differences are more in the mind than in the genes. Thus we conclude superiority and inferiority associated with racial differences are often socially constructed to satisfy the socio-political agenda of the dominant group”(Heewon Chang,Timothy Dodd;2001;1).
In the United States, the problem of equality has never been more prevalent. Equality between race, age group and gender are some of the most common. One that really catches a lot of attention is race. The problem of race started when people from Africa were slave in the United States. Once President Abraham Lincoln free the slaves, the hatred towards the now free African Americans grew premensdly. This lead to segregation, and eventually the civil rights movement. In general discrimination prevails in life particulars. We are living in a world that is based on qualifications. Being a normal human is no longer accepted. Why does racism continue to take place in the United States today? According to the sociology textbook Our Social World, minority groups are ones that differ from the dominant group, which is why they have less power, fewer privileges, and are discriminated against. The textbook also explains how there are numerous ways for dominant and minority groups to interact. Genocide is the killing of the minority group by the dominant group, while pluralism is the complete opposite whereas different ethnic or racial groups accept one another’s beliefs and values, and manage to respect each other. Multiple strategies to cope with prejudice, discrimination, and racism are used by minority groups to deal with their statuses: passing (blending in with dominant groups), acceptance, avoidance, and aggression. The first is most appropriate to use for my purposes, as it most general, and defines what i ill be analyzing. The basic problem of racism starts with the idea that there is something different between different races. Though it is an irrational thought, it is a very common one, that can seem unavoidable. We are all taught that we were all created equal, so the idea that one group is inferior to another goes against something that many people stress, and is an important point in many religions. For the most part, humans like the idea of being equal to everyone else. So why do we discriminate against people of different ethnic backgrounds?
Racism can take on many forms that plague the brain with irrationality that affects an individual’s thoughts and actions. Racism can be a physical form, through an external action, or can branch off into unethical thoughts. This is more known to be a discriminative thought, judging a person based on impressions. This social problem can also be ignored by the oblivious persons of the crowd. Many individuals speak out about how racial tension is long gone and forever forgotten ever since the first African-American was elected to be president in 2008, but this can be evidently proven false. Discrimination is education is still a real thing even in today’s time where most people don’t hold the same bigoted views that were typical over 50 years ago. The most prevalent reason for discriminating in education is due to racial disparities. Many of these discriminations are a result of past discriminations against a group of a people that seems to affect their children. The most important time for children to learn cognitive abilities and for behavioral development is during the preschool years. The amount of school readiness that a child has before they enter preschool depends mostly on the child’s parents. Throughout my research, I have discovered the time before a child even enters school can have a huge impact on the child’s academic achievements for perhaps the rest of their life. Studies show that children who start of preschool at a disadvantage in school readiness usually fall farther back while those that start with an advantage usually pull farther ahead. In my interview, I learned about the issues faced by underprivileged children in disadvantaged environments where learning can be difficult. The past discriminations in race have led to a disparity in economic statuses which have further put children at a disadvantage.
Prejudice and discrimination have both been prevalent throughout human history. Prejudice deals with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions that are held by others of one group against those of another. Discrimination on the other hand refers to the behaviors directed against another group. Prejudiced individuals have preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. There are both positive and negative forms of prejudice, however, the negative form of prejudice leads to discrimination. Individuals that practice discrimination do so to protect opportunities for themselves, by denying access to those whom they believe do not deserve the same treatment as everyone else. An example of discrimination based on prejudice involves the Jews. “Biased sentiments and negative stereotypes of Jews have been a part of Western tradition for centuries and, in fact, have been stronger and more vicious in Europe than in the United States. For nearly two millennia, European Jews have been chastised and persecuted as the “killers of Christ” and stereotyped as materialistic moneylenders and crafty business owners (Healey, p.65). The prejudice against these groups led to the discrimination against them.
Discrimination is a feasible method of making decisions in life based on the group, class, or category to which a person belongs to. “In an ideal world, people would be equal in rights, opportunities, and responsibilities, despite their race or gender. In the world we live in, however, we constantly face all kinds of neglect based on different attributes.” When one hears the word discrimination, the first thought that comes to mind is racial discrimination.
