People believed that the darker the pigmentation, the poor and less powerful one is. When the African Americans, Mexican Americans and Asians migrated to the United States, the belief that darker skin tone holds less power inaugurated. Although in 1955 the Supreme Court outlawed segregation, and introduced the idea that “all men are created equally”, we still experience discrimination, racial, prejudices, and stereotyping comments today (add citation). In a symbolic interactionist perspective, according to the Sociology textbook, prejudice is a “belief about an individual or a group that is not subject to change on the basis of evidence.” No matter what evidence, proof you provide their opinion wouldn 't change. Like the Sociologist Zygmunt Bauman said “ Man is before his acrs; nothing he does may change what he is.” Discrimination, stereotyping and stigma are almost the concept, but the main difference is discrimination is the “unequal treatment of individuals on their basis of their membership in a group.” Where on the other hand, stigma is “ An attribute that is deeply discrediting to a individual or a group because it overshadows other attributes and merits the individual or group may possess.” And Stereotyping is more of “generalization of a set of characteristics to all members of a group.” Stereotyping is very common in everyday life, for example, when I’m sitting in my car alone in a parking lot while waiting for my parents to finish shopping, if I see a group of African American guys, I will lock my doors and make sure all the windows are up. Or even when we the teacher announces that only “one” persona got an A on their exam, and we all are more towards looking at an Asian person, because they are noted to be hardworking and smart. It’s not as apparent as it was in the twentieth century, but it’s still surfaced. For example, in the journal The Persistent Problem of Colorism: Skin Tone, Status, and Inequality by Margaret Hunter, she really analyzed what colorism means in difference ethnicities. With Africans Americans Hunter says “lighter-skinned people of color enjoy substantial privileges that are still unattainable to their darker-skinned brothers and sisters. In fact, light-skinned people earn more money, complete more years of schooling, live in better neighborhoods, and marry higher-status people than darker-skinned people of the same race or ethnicity (Hunter 237). Hunter goes on to explain more in depth about how colorism works and what it is as well as the stereotypes that go with it. For example many people think that colorism is only a ‘black or Latino problem’ when it all started with whites and people with similar color (Hunter 238). As an African American myself and being a part of the “darker skinned” category I have always had struggles since I was a young age. I have always noticed other girls were like me, but of a lighter tone, but it’s never changed the way I think about them or was never really apparent when I was young. Let’s begin with racism, which dates back to as far as humans can remember. “It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another -- or the belief that another person is less than human -- because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. It has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations, and legal codes” One of the most known acts of racism was the enslavement of Africans in the new world. This racism was a result of the racist belief that black Africans were less human than white Europeans.
There are so many ideas that explained how racism began. According to polygenesis theory, racism rose from the different treatment for each race with existence of stratification among people. Racism can be broadly defined as attitude, belief, behavior, or institutional arrangement that favors one racial group over another (Farely, 1995). These ridiculous ideas of knowing who people are based on what they look like were derived from stereotypes that have been around for a while. These stereotypes came from the Ku Klux Klan, also known as the KKK, who spread these ideas like wildfire. These ideas were drilled into people 's heads, and these ideas were taken as true facts, and this influenced them to do actions that can 't be proven to be racist, but have a racist motive. This concept is highly seen in institutional racism. The KKK spread many ideas that made people who were different seem like savages who did not con form to society. Laws were set into place to prevent discrimination. Despite laws, these stereotypes are still seen today and thus we see institutional racism.
For centuries, the media, has portrayed all races in a certain way. Characters and actors are defined by the color of their skin in movies and TV shows. Slavery can be a result of race and ethnicity issues. Slavery changed the image of how blacks was viewed in society. Slavery not only changed how Europeans viewed African Americans but it changed how they viewed themselves. With the power that they had acquired over blacks shaped how society view them as well. This was a result of viewing Europeans as “white” and others that are not white as “black”. With the incoming immigrants coming from all different countries other than Europe, they had to found a way to classify them easily. This resulted in the creation of “whites”. All races were combined and defined by their colors with them teaming together. The abolition of slavery increased the line and differences between races. When I first heard this quote in this film, I was not surprised about it. Each human is unique compared to the other; however, we are group together based on uncontrollable physical characteristics. Eyes, hair texture, and skin tone became a way to separate who belongs where. Each group was labeled as having the same traits. African Americans were physically superior, Asians were the more intellectual race, and Indians were the advanced farmers. Certain races became superior to the next and society shaped their hierarchy on what genes you inherited.
Colorism is a form of discrimination based on the color of someone’s skin tone. Colorism has the greatest impact on the African American culture and community. It is sad that we have to face discrimination within our own ethnic group, Along with every other ethnic group in the United States. Colorism has been passed down generation after generation. It is dated all the way back to the slavery dates. The idea of light skin being better than dark skin has been deeply rooted in our culture. We see colorism in our everyday life on social network, in our workplace, school, and relationship. We don’t even recognize it because we are unfamiliar of the word colorism and its meaning. So we ignore the fact that people are being treated different in their own race because of the shade of their skin. People are taught colorism growing up informally and don’t realize the effect it has on our culture, because we see it as normal and we were brainwashed to think that. Colorism is an issue amongst African Americans that is slowly tearing down the culture as it has been for centuries and still is today.

While both race and gender have very real societal and, in some instances, personal consequences which enables both to be categorized as real neither race nor gender is more real than the other. Both of them faced and still face overt and covert discrimination, and both of them are built upon a mountain of logical fallacies that are able to ultimately be reduced down to societal standards and obligations forced upon them by the dominant group. Since they are also both deeply embedded in our culture they have become integrated into our sense of who we, as humans, are and in our perceptions of other people and situations.

Prejudice and discrimination have both been prevalent throughout human history. Prejudice deals with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions that are held by others of one group against those of another. Discrimination on the other hand refers to the behaviors directed against another group. Prejudiced individuals have preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. There are both positive and negative forms of prejudice, however, the negative form of prejudice leads to discrimination. Individuals that practice discrimination do so to protect opportunities for themselves, by denying access to those whom they believe do not deserve the same treatment as everyone else. An example of discrimination based on prejudice involves the Jews. “Biased sentiments and negative stereotypes of Jews have been a part of Western tradition for centuries and, in fact, have been stronger and more vicious in Europe than in the United States. For nearly two millennia, European Jews have been chastised and persecuted as the “killers of Christ” and stereotyped as materialistic moneylenders and crafty business owners (Healey, p.65). The prejudice against these groups led to the discrimination against them.
In the world today, racism and discrimination is one of the major issues being faced with. Racism has existed throughout the world for centuries and has been the primary reasons for wars, conflicts, and other human calamities all over the planet. It has been a part of America since the European colonization of North America beginning in the 17th century. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exist in our schools, workforces, and anywhere else that social lives are occurring. It started from slavery in America to caste partiality in India, down to the Holocaust in Europe during World War II.
