My understanding of “SMART Goals” is that it helps the students, teachers and parents to get to the right path about the students’ needs and education. In general it pin point how an IEP should be written and the kind of information that it should have. First having a specific goal and objectives that state details what are we going to work with the students. Second, goals and objectives are measure by teachers and parents observing or through assessment, how much improvement have the students have made since the last observation. When writing measurable goals and objectives we need to specify what we want to see happening in the students and how long is going to be measure. Third, action words in which we are basically need to use words
that describe exactly what the students are working on. Fourth, realistic and relevant by creating objective and goals that students needs to improve academically, in life skills, functional skills, or behavior that need to be change, in others words things that are going to benefit the students and not simply writing goals and objectives that students do not need or pertain to them, having in mind that all students are different and unique. Last, time limited here the teachers are breaking student progress in section by giving a time frame at what level should students be. When looking at each of the steps anyone that reads the students IEP would be able to understand and know exactly what it needs to be done to help the students succeed in their goal and objectives. A parent input about their child in the IEP is very important and crucial. When parents are able to provide information about their child behavior, academics needs, and the things that they feel important for their child to learn and achieve, it helps the team from the IEP to write goals and objectives that are meaningful to the child. The team can figure out the child strengths, weakness, and level of academics skills. There is always a saying” who knows children better than their parents”. One thing to keep in mind that the child will change teacher throughout the years but parents will always remain there and they will know more about the child in general.
