Supervision
Detailed policies and procedures in relation to all aspects of supervision and specific duties are imperative for schools. Our supervision policy needs be updated with input from all staff members to ensure that they are aware of their duties and responsibilities, inside and outside of the classroom. The principal must ensure that there are enough supervisors on the schoolyard in the morning and at lunchtime and that the supervisors are patrolling the yard. The case law highlighted in this document identify the need for an adequate number of supervisors, proper supervision procedures and reasonable foreseeability in relation to removing playground dangers. Foreseeing injuries may include placing padding on basketball poles and trees, removing trees with thorns, limiting running on wet/frost days and having strict rules for ball games or games that need equipment on yard.
As our infant classroom is located on an upper level, the importance of supervision on the stairwells is crucial when in use by pupils as the toilet is accessed by stairs. School employees who take charge of activities that require specialist knowledge or expertise must have the requisite skills in order to properly supervise that activity, otherwise the activity should not be attempted. In order to limit negligence claims, detailed planning is required based on age, skill level, and recognising student abilities and limitations. Participants must be physically capable of participating in lessons; parental instructions and IEPs should be followed to incorporate potential limitations. Plans should include safety measures. No greater obligation is placed on school officials than to protect the children in their charge from foreseeable dangers, whether those dangers arise from the careless acts or intentional transgressions of others. Although the overarching mission of a board of education is to educate, its first imperative must be to do no harm to the children in its care. A board of education must take reasonable measures to assure that the teachers and administrators who stand as surrogate parents during the day are educating, not endangering, and protecting, not exploiting, vulnerable children (Frugis v. Bracigliano, 2003).
The leading issue of the WA DoE Duty of Care for Students Policy is stated in Section 1.A “Teaching staff owe a duty to take reasonable care for the safety and welfare of students whilst students are involved in school activities or are present for the purposes of a school activity” (WA DoE, 2007, p. 3). This means teachers are legally responsible to protect students from reasonably foreseeable risks of harm whenever a relationship exists between a teacher and a student. When working practitioners must not only protect the children they work with when in the school setting and off site, but also themselves. Whether in school or off-site the school safeguarding policy should be referred to, to give guidance and adhered to at all times.

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment, there are many rules you must follow. I try to start out by abiding by all safety rules, established by the Learning center. I know that my center has the child’s best interest, we work hard to avoid any injuries at all cost. One of the rules that I teach my students is, to always use their walking feet. We must be cautious, especially if we have to walk up and down a flight of stairs. I am also current on my CPR/First Aid certification, just in case I need to assist in an emergency.
Teachers no longer have the opportunity to discipline their students in fear of violating the student's rights. Students now dictate how classrooms are instructed. Teachers must be aware of their physical contact and ethical topics that can lead into false allegations. How can a student learn in this environment? Not only are teachers in these areas responsible to hold the same standards of supervision, but also are responsible for explaining the uses and mechanics of the machine and tools with which students will engage during the course of the class (Seitz, 1971). Beyond those special interest classrooms, there are also special situations that administrations should pay extra attention to, which include field trips, movement between classes, activities at school-sponsored activities, dances, athletic contests, and the school bus (Seitz, 1971). Risk assessments have to be made when on school trips or off site visits based on students needs for example special educational or medical needs. Adult to student ratio, routes and location as well as emergency procedures.
Personal Philosophy of Supervision Beliefs and Philosophy School administrators are important in setting the path for a successful school (Glickman, et al., 2014). The principals could play a dynamic leadership depending on how they exercise their beliefs of the organizational and social environment (McNair, 2011). The principals are the primary facilitators for developing the foundations in learning that will last, to manage the student’s performance at schools, and seeking the improvement at school that will cause great impacts in school‘s education (Gordon,1989). In the recent years in the U.S., education has change in a more cultural diversity population, it is imperative that school supervisors, are trained to encounter this cultural issues, but also assisting others with the opportunities to develop appropriate abilities to deal with different cultures (Glickman, et al., 2014). Even though this increasing awareness of the multicultural issues, many supervisors are not being trained how to deal with this issues in the daily practice.

In every institution the type of leadership style is important for a successful environment. In order to establish a successful school environment to compete globally, the leader should comprehend the basic leadership theories and styles (Glickman et al., 2010). The cultures at schools are important to the success of the students and overall of the school, but also can be very difficult to establish and maintain without the proper leadership knowledge (Waite, 1995). In United States many schools could be place in the categories of conventional, congenial, or collegial, because the strategies used for their leadership (Glickman et al., 2010).The chosen school could be classified according to different criteria and could be determine in which area their leadership pertains more. In order to analyzed and classify the leadership, it was imperative to observed the way the leader make decisions, the approached with the stakeholders, how the instruction is delivered, and how they realized their job (Marshall, 2005). In this analysis will be identify the category that this school will be, the school climate, the type of supervision and leadership.
Thousands of people are affected by the lack of school safety in schools across the nation. Students everywhere are attending schools that are more dangerous than expected. This is a growing concern everywhere, and schools need to improve, or else they are prone to being unsafe. Whether it is building, drill, concussion, social, or technology safety, schools need to improve to lower the risk of an incident.
Classroom management is a key element to establish a successful learning environment in any classroom. An effective classroom management plan creates a positive learning environment. Classroom management is affected by the characteristics of the students and their behavior. Students’ behavior is influenced by their age, academic abilities, goals, interests, and home backgrounds (Evertson, Emmer, and Worsham, 2006). Teachers need a diverse array of classroom management skills to facilitate learning. A classroom with a proper management plan will spend less time in disciplining and more time in learning. Students in effectively managed classrooms know and follow clearly defined rules and routines. A classroom management plan should provide for several important factors that influence proper discipline in the classroom (Edwards, 2004).
The role and responsibilities of a teacher is very complex. Teachers are responsible for making sure their learners acquire the knowledge they need, but also achieve their qualification by the end of the course in a safe learning environment, so they have the skills and experience they need to start their careers. To achieve that goal a teacher must be creative, professional, flexible and knowledgeable enough to deal with daily challenges and find different ways to help their learners needs. Establishing a safe and stimulating environment for learners, creating mutual respect and set goals that stretch and challenge learners of all backgrounds and abilities.
Classroom management is the foundation of education at all levels. Optimal teaching and learning require an environment conducive to learning through structure, support, organization and guidelines. Classroom layout, routines and procedures as well as a carefully thought out discipline system are the core elements of my classroom management strategies.
