Over the past 10 weeks, I have worked at Deloitte & Touche, LLP as an Audit Intern. Overall the internship was an important learning experience and invaluable in my professional development. I was able to gain real work experience in audit and network with numerous people at varied stages in their careers. There were many Deloitte-sponsored intern events in addition to the regular daily work I performed on my three engagements.
At the beginning of the internship, each intern was required to compile a list of goals they hoped to accomplish throughout the internship. We were given four categories to consider. Each intern was provided a board of Deloitte professionals which included an Onboarding Advisor (first year), a Counselor (manager with about 5 years of experience), and an Advisor (a partner with the firm). There were several Deloitte-sponsored dinners and lunches for the purpose of keeping in touch with these individuals throughout the internship. We were also encouraged to communicate with our counselors outside of scheduled events to ask questions and discuss our progress throughout the internship. I had a wonderful time listening to other peoples’ experiences, whether from fellow interns, staff within their first few years, or professionals who had spent their entire careers with Deloitte.
In addition to those events involving fantastic food and good company, there were events such as a Houston Rockets game, a Super Bowl party at a partner’s house, a Junior Achievement community service project, and presentations on various career-related topics. The Junior Achievement event was very interesting and enjoyable. We were able to go into a classroom and interact with students to tell them about our experiences as interns at Deloitte and as college students. I was able to assist the team with a variety of different tasks, but I feel I could have done better when asking questions. Early on, I did not write down lists of questions to ask all at once but would just ask questions as they came up. Everything was entirely new, but I struggled more than I should have to complete assignments in a timely manner. However, I was able to learn and make improvements by the end of the engagement.
The team at NET was hard-working, but I never felt like part of the team. I was mostly given simple tasks that did not require much time. The team struggled to keep me busy and was not able to devote time to training me on the “why” of the work papers I helped prep. They seemed to approach my time on the engagement as a burden to them and did not seem willing to trust me with learning on the
