As May approaches, many students, teachers, and parents prepare for graduation ceremonies. This time is often used for reflection upon all the accomplishments of those involved. Google, a world-renowned search engine has been using this reflection mentality in a multitude of its commercials. In 2011, the company released a commercial promoting its internet browser, Google Chrome (Nudd). This commercial, “Dear Sophie Lee,” was one of Google’s first, and it became an instant classic (Nudd). It was part of a string of advertisements centered upon the Chrome browser (Nudd). For her thesis paper, Ms.Vanessa To of Ryerson University compared a few of the Google commercials based on their likes and comments on YouTube. Her analysis showed people were more than ten times more likely to have a positive reaction to the video than a negative one (To). Google Chrome’s “Dear Sophie Lee” advertisement adeptly conveys its company’s message: “The web is what you make of it.”

The commercial emphasizes an altruistic parent-child relationship throughout. It shows all of the incredible ways a father sees his daughter grow through her first years of life and the impact she has on him. Using this relationship coupled with the nostalgia-inducing music played throughout the commercial provides the audience with a feeling of saudade that shapes the advertisement. This combination is instrumental in creating an emotional connection with viewers. All humans had to be born from a parent, so using this connection leads the viewers to think back upon how quickly life has passed and how immense of an impact a parental figure has had on their lives. The first appeal is shown by using logos to give the viewers reasoning to give some donations to animals that are in need of a home. Logos is an appeal to an audience basic on logic or reason. During the opening scenes of the commercial, words flash on and off the screen in between the videos and pictures of abused animals. The spokesperson speaks to the audience as if she is a coworker, because she wants the reader to understand that she is like them. The relationship that is shared with the audience is achieved by the friendly tone and atmosphere in the commercial. By making the viewer feel like they can connect with the spokesperson, the commercial was able to spark the interest of the readers. This advertisement features Pathos, because the little boy in the advertisement will probably make people feel guilty, because they spend a lot of money on unnecessary things and waste it, but this child says “Don’t I deserve a happy life?”, and this will probably make people from our society want to spend money to support this cause. This advertisement also features patriotism, because it suggests that purchasing this product will show the love, and support you have towards your country. This company makes people from America want to support this cause. It says in the advertisement,” Help stop child poverty in America”. This advertisement also features Transfer andWeasel Words because it uses positive words, and positive images to suggest that the product being sold is also positive.
One of the main ways the commercial does this, was in the last scene when the daughter is packing for college and the box of the origamis fell on the floor. Viewers were touched by the fact that the daughter had kept all the origamis her father had made her. This implies to viewers that happy moments and memories are shared with their gum. Like many mothers all over the world, the moms in this commercial are shown encouraging and supporting their children not only with their actions, but through the use of their words. For instance, when the mother and little girl are shown in a car accident together, the mother looks at her daughter and says, “You’re okay. You’re oka..” In another clip, when a mother and her son are on a rough, stormy plane ride, the mother says to her son, “Everything is alright”. Through logos, the audience is convinced that you can always count on moms for mental reassurance that no matter the outcome, everything will be okay. The commercial poured out a lot of emotions showing empathy, compassion and happiness through the women describing the way they look and someone else’s viewpoint on the person’s appearance. When the piano play pianissimo in the background it sets the tone of the atmosphere very mellow, serene and sympathetic. As you watch the advertisement seeing multiple women gaze at their sketches realizing the difference between a negative input and a positive output melts your heart and makes you smile to appreciate on the way you look. Dove revealed a caring side of them showing that they care a lot about their customers, also advertising to their viewers they are a “people person company”.
From the pleasureable to somber junctures, we see that pathos is being revealed. Pathos arouses emotion in a congregation. There are many details used in the Maddie commercial that create this theme. For example, the introduction begins when Maddie is older, therefore the lighting is gloomy and dreary. However as the flashbacks get deeper, the saturation of colors begin to take place. This was broadcasted by the author to show the young life the dog and her owner contained. As they got older, shown at the beginning of the commercial, the life and color began to die along with them. Not only did the lighting allow them to get their emotional theme across, but the music set the mood as well. The use of soft, quiet, and calming music is what gives the audience the realization that life is fun, but not always easy. It points out that life is a serious matter and love is an important element to living. Also, the use of limited talking attracts the audience. Advertisements are all over the place. Whether they are on TV, radio, or in a magazine, there is no way that you can escape them. They all have their target audience who they have specifically designed the ad for. And of course they are selling their product. This is a multi billion dollar industry and the advertiser’s study all the ways that they can attract the person’s attention. One way that is used the most and is in some ways very controversial is use of sex to sell products. For me to analyze this advertisement I used the rhetorical triangle, as well as ethos, pathos, and logos.
For example, at the end of the commercial, the quote, “Our children and grandchildren will look back at this time… and we need to make sure that they can be proud of us.” (Clinton, H.), tries to create an atmosphere that makes you feel protective and compassionate, since most parents want to give their children the best life they possibly can. Another technique that was used in the commercial was showing the young children’s facial expressions while they were watching Trump discriminate others, and display disturbing behavior while being praised by his supporters. The children in general, convey certain feelings from the reader while watching the commercial. Children are seen as innocent and willing to learn, so when the viewer sees them watching Donald Trump speak as terribly as he does, emotions start to arise. The black screens that contain the phrases “Our children are watching.” and “What example will we set for them?” also sets a concerned tone. That concerned tone makes you question Donald Trump’s words and actions, as well as his qualifications to become the President. The Chevy puppy commercial is one that grabbed the heart of many across the nation. This tear-jerking 2014 commercial called Maddie was a viral car commercial that had people attached to the dog in the commercial that has an interesting timeline. The commercial starts at the end of the dog’s life and works its way backwards watching the dog get younger all while addressing common events that happen in everyone’s lives. This essay, while not perfect, does complete the job of that a car commercial must complete. The overall goal for car commercials is to make sure that the audience can remember the next time that they go out to buy a car, that for example, Chevy is in the forefront of their mind.
