Numerous advances led to Sigmund Freud’s inspirational Stages of Psychosexual Development, and it was Freud that introduced a clear theory explaining the process by which infants develop into adults. The transition from the Oral, Anal and Phallic stages begins to help us understand some of the processes that might lead to understanding attachment issues. Freud argued that humans are born “polymorphously perverse,” the idea that any number of objects could be a source of pleasure. While relief from stress observed in a child might be interpreted as simply the absence of emotional pain, on a deeper level, re-attachment and physical closeness to a caregiver after prolonged separation should result in a pleasurable experience. Setting aside for the moment the sexual aspects of Freud’s theory, the basis of his premise remains one of the human connection that is gained through some form of physical contact, be it obtained from others or themselves. (Stevenson, 2001) In the early 1950s, Harry Harlow’s famous study of rhesus monkeys to determine attachment relationships demonstrated that infant rhesus monkeys raised in isolation, preferred the comfort of a cloth-covered surrogate mother to that of a wire-mesh surrogate with an attached feeding bottle. Harlow wished to dispute the traditional view that affection and mother–infant attachment was based on food, and his experiments had clearly demonstrated that the foundations of attachment were not associated solely with the need for nourishment. A more important facet of human nature was that the profoundly meaningful act of physical intimacy plays a greater role in the health of an infant than nourishment alone. Harry Harlow’s work on attachment was conducted on two groups of rhesus monkeys. The monkeys were separated from their mothers and were subsequently given a choice of two surrogate mothers, one made of wire, the other of towelling (or terry-cloth)(Custance 2010). In one group the wire mother provided food in the form of a baby feeding bottle containing milk and the terry-cloth mother provided no food. In the other group the wire mother did not provide food and the terry-cloth mother did. During the twentieth century, Harry Harlow performed one of the most controversial experiments that led to a scientific breakthrough concerning the parent-child relationship. It paved the way for understanding terms such as secure, insecure, ambivalent, and disorganized relationships (Bernstein, 2014, 364). During the course of this study, Harlow separated baby monkeys from their birth mothers and isolated them in frightening environments. According to the video “H.H. Overview”, this proved the monkey’s preference for a comforting mother versus a nutritional one. However, this raises the question: can his experiments be deemed ethical, or did his scientific inquiry overstep boundaries?
Susie’s mother opened the door to let Molly, Susie’s babysitter, inside. Ten-month old Susie seemed happy to see Molly. Susie then observed her mother put her jacket on and Susie’s face turned from smiling to sad as she realized that her mother was going out. Molly had sat for Susie many times in the past month, and Susie had never reacted like this before. When Susie’s mother returned home, the sitter told her that Susie had cried until she knew that her mother had left and then they had a nice time playing with toys until she heard her mother’s key in the door. Bowlby was concerned with issues such as: separation distress and the effect of ‘maternal deprivation’ on later development. He argued that maternal separation was a traumatic experience for infants and if infants unsuccessfully established a secure attachment by the age of three they could become pathological and suffer psychological problems (Burman, 1994). Bowlby’s theory was independent on ethology and he was largely associated with Harry Harlow and his experiments with rhesus monkeys (Burman, 1994) and Lorenz’s (1935) research on imprinting on geese.
The experiment I’ll be exploring is the Harry Harlow experiment. Harlow theme of his experiment targeted the ideal of attachment between animal; human and monkeys. The need for and the different types of attachments. Harlow focused on how it affected the brain both negatively and positively based on one’s individual variables and differences. Harlow conducted experiments on baby monkeys to see how their behavior would develop if they didn’t have the influence of a mother monkey. Harlow placed infant monkeys into different crates which held a wire-mother, and a cloth mother. These objects represented the touch of an actual mother monkey. While observing the monkeys behavior Harlow noticed that there were things similar to children such as social withdrawal. Harlow did many tests and in one discovered that the hormone levels in some of the isolated monkeys were much higher than those of the non-separated monkeys. In Correspondence some of the growth hormone levels were less in many of the isolated monkeys and higher in the normal ones.
In the course of child development, a multitude of factors have severe ramifications on the child’s future. These factors are either categorized as risk or protective, based on the positive or negative benefits that are derived from each. Risk factors exist as potentially mal-adaptive behavior profile variables that influence or interfere with a child’s competency to thrive in their environment. Protective factors, on the other hand, create positive influences on development by negating effects of various risk factors. Both risk and protective factors exist in a variety of forms. Genetic, biological, psychological, familial, and social-cultural influences can be seen on each side. Not only do they exist in a variety of forms, but their abilities also depend on contextual situations such as age, gender, and environmental conditions. It is important to look at these factors when determining norms in developmental pathways or observing deviances, which could explain future behavioral problems. On a superficial level, the amalgamation of risk and protective factors could create predictable outcomes in the behavioral, emotional, and social stability of an individual. Adequate preventative measures to increase resilience in a child with many risk factors, could lead to sufficient buffering of these potentially harmful variables. From a psychologist’s perspective, it is vital to understand risk factors and protective factors to better understand and aid patients who may show preemptive signs of future developmental problems.
In conclusion, mother-infant attachment paves the way for adult social relationships as supported by Mary Ainsworth’s Strange Situation experiment and its follow-up, Bowlby’s 44 Thieves study, and Henry Harlow’s classic experiment with the monkeys. Furthermore, strong secure attachments breed healthy social relationships, while insecure attachments lead to difficult social and emotional issues. The best way to prevent insecure attachments is by creating that strong mother-infant bond in the first year of life. It is crucial for potential parents to be prepared emotionally, economically, and socially for a new infant. As the acorn has the potential to become an oak with the right conditions and environment, an infant also has the potential to become a successful adult with a supportive, healthy, environment.

He proposed that the first few years of a child’s life is crucial, if a separation between the mother and infant occurs then this could lead to “severe emotional and critical consequences” that could have a dangerous impact on the development of the child later in life. Bowlby referred this bond to be irreversibly broken and described the disruption of this bond as “maternal deprivation” which would be known as a long-term effect of deprivation. (Rivers, 2014). Deprivation is when a child develops an attachment with their primary caregiver but drastic circumstances causes this attachment to be lost, therefore the infant no longer has this attached bond to their caregiver. Leading to this Bowlby believed that once this form of attachment breaks, the damage would be permanent and the bond between the infant and primary care-giver can no longer be fixed. He stated that this loss of attachment can “entirely cripple the capacity to make relationships” (Bowlby 1952, pp 11-12). Henceforth resulting in serious long term cognitive, social and emotional difficulties for the child in the future.
