From a young age, art has been deeply integrated into my life, my father had been interested in art and he wanted to pass that passion onto his children. It worked because my favorite pastime became drawing in sketchbooks and collecting as many pencils and crayons as I could and it continued into elementary school. My favorite class became art and I always looked forward to discovering new techniques and experimenting with different mediums. Then in high school, I was lucky enough to have a variety of art classes to choose from and I tried to fit in as many as I could into my schedule. I’d always been interested in a career in the arts, but I was unsure of the possibilities of achieving that goal. Eventually, I decided to take a semester off after graduation to think about what I wanted to do and figure out how to achieve it. Given my status as a DACA recipient, I also had to figure out which schools would accept me and also how I could get financial help to be able to attend a college. When I found out SCAD could accept me, I was elated. It was a college I’d been interested in and wanted to attend. I’d always thought about making my passion for art into a career but it wasn’t until I was older that I kept hearing how that wouldn’t be beneficial which discouraged me but I was lucky enough to have encouraging art teachers who made me aware of the different fields that could be pursued with an arts degree. Once I decided I wanted to pursue an art degree, I began reflecting on how I’d want to continue forward and I thought of my Art History class. It merged two of my favorite subjects together and I learned more about art and the influence it’s had on the world. I was able to see art in a different perspective, to learn how each era influenced the next, and how much of it was influenced by the era’s current events. Art has always played an important aspect of my life and it’s influenced my perspective. I believe SCAD is the perfect option for me to continue my passion for art and continue to help me
