I struggled with the beginning of this letter because the common, two-word, usual phrase does not seem to serve the intended purpose strong enough. I graduated from New Mexico Tech on May 13th, 2017. I graduated summa cum laude with a final GPA of 3.89/4.00. I was selected and inducted as a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, a physics honors fraternity with high standards. I have a deeper understanding of some of the more abstract theory and concepts that humankind has come to learn about in our physical Universe. My skill in mathematics now includes intermediate methods to complex systems of partial differential equations. I left high school with an embarrassing GPA of 2.09 and not a care in the world. When New Mexico Tech rejected my application, I was crushed but I knew there had to be a way to break the brand that I had given to myself so long before. The letter I wrote as part of my appeal was titled, “The Tenth Statistical Sample”. In my letter, I spoke of policies in general that are born out of the necessity to serve the so-called “9 out of 10 times” (the 1 to 2 standard deviations that are to be accepted as the norm). I made a strong assertion in that letter. I claimed that I was the tenth sample that the policy would have normally stripped of opportunity. I did not challenge the philosophy that created the policy; I happen to agree wholeheartedly with designs that fit the vast majority (makes sense resource-wise). I merely asserted that I am not a part of the vast majority and I appealed to my being an exception. I knew this meant, especially to me, that I not only would have to make good and complete my degree if accepted, but that I would have to excel in every task undertook at Tech. I feel I attained this goal. Every course, every special project, every assignment, I devoted every bit of my soul to. It was time consuming. At times, it was difficult. Over the course of the recent past, universities across the U.S. have been faced with decisions on admissions. What was once popular, affirmative action, is now fading with a long past of problems, and new programs are entering into the picture. The University of Dayton and many others are taking actions to improve the standards of their students, regardless of race and background. These new concepts are reflecting higher academic progress, and increase in prestige and national reputation. By basing selection on academic ability and incorporating improved recruiting techniques, the nation would be filled with greater college standards and no use for an old and tiring affirmative action process.
Jennifer Gratz, Patrick Hamacher, and Barber Grutter have filed lawsuits against the University of Michigan for being denied admission based on their race. Hamacher had a “GPA of slightly under 3.4 and an ACT score of 28” (Kosseff). Gratz, who attended Southgate High School, had a GPA of 3.765 and ACT score of 25, said she hopes to change an admissions system that she believes is flawed” (Kosseff). Grutter, who tried to gain admission to the University of Michigan law school, maintained a straight-A average through college. She did this all in spite having two children and working nights to support them. All of them witnessed students with much lower credentials get accepted because they were minorities.
Last summer, the Supreme Court ruled against the use of race in the college admissions process in the case of Fisher v. University of Texas. Since then, affirmative action has become a big issue in the media; however, many people still do not even know what affirmative action is. Affirmative action is a policy to prevent discrimination on the basis of “color, religion, sex, or national origin.” Overall, it favors minorities that are often discriminated. It might sound like an excellent policy; however, the use of this policy in the college admissions process is prejudice. In the college admissions process, affirmative action lowers the standards for some races, while raising the standard for other races. For example, an Asian might need a SAT score of 2300 to be considered for admission at a top school such as Yale and a white applicant might need a score of 2100, while an African American or Hispanic only needs a score of 1700. While affirmative action provides equality in the workplace, it has no place in the college admissions process and should, therefore, be abolished and replaced. This type of policy can be repealed completely, replaced with a college admissions process that favors first generation college applicants, or replaced with a policy based on an applicant’s socioeconomic status.

Miller and Ann Jurecic, changed the tone of the book and put it into a metaphor. This metaphor was about the reader in your writing, or for anyone reading should feel like Alice in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The reader should be reading, and figuratively fall into the reading, by this the authors means the reader should not want to put that book down.
