Throughout the story “ Apollo” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and “by any other name” by santha rama Rau, the authors reveal that friendship and identity are important to every individuals daily life. In the story Apollo, okenwa has been taught to follow his parents foot steps, but in reality he doesn’t want to. He has a passion for Kung fu. Okenwa has never had a true friend till Raphael came. Raphael is one of the houseboys for Okenwa’s wealthy family. They may have some differences in life but their passion become the core of their friendship. “One day in the middle of practice i look up to see Raphael standing in the doorway, watching me. This is what started their friendship and this is what a friendship is based on, similiaritues. Okenwa felt a unexpected pleasure because he has never been relatable to anyone. In addition to friendship. Identity is a big role in a friendship. A friendship grows stronger by knowing both of the people are committed to getting to know more about each other and understanding about what makes up that person. In the shorty story “by any other name” by santha Rama Rua, the author explains that identity is important to every individual throughout thier whole life. Identity can come in all forms. In the short story the form it is coming in is by santha being called another name that the English students gave her “I remember having a certain detached and disbelieving concern in the actions of “Cynthia” but certainly no responsibility”(p.1). Santha has no attachment to her fake name that they have given her so she isn’t responsable for “ Cynthias” actions. One part of Santhas identity is changed by people who don’t understand where she came from and what the meaning is behind her name.
