In her short story "By Any Other Name", Santha Rama Rau suggests that identity isn't controlled by a name but a name can have an effect on how you act but not who you are. Santha has been given her new name and is worried what effects it will have in her and her identity. Santha says "At that age, if one's name is changed, one develops a curious form of dual personality." (Page 1) Santha mentions dual personality and that at the young she is she could suffer from it if she keeps having to be called "Cynthia”. To Santha her identity is not "Cynthia" and since she's had her named change she feels as if she has two identities. In addition, Santha is talking about how she doesn't feel connect or herself when i is "Cynthia" Santha feels no connection
