Racial Differences The difference of color is seen through the eyes, but the formulation of racial judgement and discrimination is developed in the subconscious mind. Toni Morrison’s short story “Recitatif (1983)” explores the racial difference and challenges that both Twyla and Roberta experience. Morrison’s novels such as “Beloved”, “The Bluest Eye”, and her short story “Recitatif” are all centered around the issues and hardships of racism. The first time that Twyla and Roberta met Twyla makes a racial remake or stereotype about the texture and smell of Roberta’s hair. Although they both were in the orphanage because of similar situations, Twyla instantly finds a racial difference. The racial differences between Twyla and Roberta affects their friendship, personal views of each other, and relationship with their husbands. Both Twyla and Roberta’s perception of another changes every time they interact with each other. The interaction is not quite what Twyla expects it to be the first time they meet, Roberta acts as if she does not really want to speak to Twyla. “There was this silence that came down right after I laughed. without anyone saying goodbye, so I thought I would do it for her.” (Recitatif 250). This instance highlights the beginning of their deteriorating friendship. Societal influences caused a deterioration in their friendship. Once Twyla sensed Roberta acting different towards her, she questions the bond that was built when they were children. Roberta recognizes Twyla in the market and wants to have coffee to catch up but Twyla was hesitant because of the incident during the first encounter but she obliges. “I remembered Howard Johnson’s and looking for a chance to speak only to be greeted with a stingy “wow”… I tried to think why we were glad to see each other this time and not before. Once twelve years ago, we passed like strangers. A black girl and a white girl…” ( Recitatif 252-253). Although the conversation goes well at the coffee shop, Twyla cannot help but bring up the issue on why Roberta acts as if she does not want to speak with her when they saw each other at Howards Johnson’s. Roberta blamed it on the time period of separations between blacks and whites. Little did Twyla know that the “black and white” issue will cause conflict between the two of them because of their beliefs. The defining encounter that officially ends Twyla and Roberta’s friendship is a huge conflicting disagreement during their protest at their children’s school.
Twyla drives by and happens to see Roberta protesting on the integration of their children’s school. Twyla is confused as to why Roberta would be against this issue. “What are you doing? Picketing. What’s it look like…I wonder what made you think you were different. .. I swayed back and forth like a sideways yo-yo. Automatically I reached for Roberta…My arm shot out of the car window but no receiving hand was there.” (Recitatif 256-257). Not only did Twyla finally see the differences of perspectives but once she started getting attacked she was looking for Roberta’s help but she realized she was not there to help
her. As both of the girls got older, their racial difference becomes more of an issue between them two. When race is removed from the equation, it makes room for strong sincere bonds to be built.
Once again, Roberta and Twyla meet at and uppity grocery store; Roberta has climbed up the social ladder and tries to play nice. However, when Twyla brings up Maggie, Roberta tells a different story than what Twyla remembers and then tries to defend her past behavior towards Twyla by saying “‘You know how everything was (141).’” Roberta’s defense mechanism by blaming the times shows the reader just how prevalent instilled racism is between the two. Likewise, the plot reaches a climax when the women meet a third time at their children’s schools during integration. The two begin a full-on picket war with one another because Twyla catches Roberta protesting the integration of schools and when confronted, believes she is doing nothing wrong. Tensions rise when the two mirror the phrase “’I wonder what made me think you were different (143).’” This admission to social and racial differences expresses the theme of the story and opens one another’s eyes to what has really happened between the
This leaves it up to us to figure it out for ourselves. The next example of how race influences our characters is very telling. When Twyla’s mother and Roberta’s mother meet, we see not only race influencing the characters but, how the parents can pass it down to the next generation. This takes place when the mothers come to the orphanage for chapel and Twyla describes to the reader Roberta’s mother being “bigger than any man and on her chest was the biggest cross I’d ever seen” (205).

My research was guided by these ideas of racism and loss of self, suffered in the novel, by the main character Pecola Breedlove. This text generates many racial and social-cultural problems, dealing with the lost identity of a young African American women, due to her obsession with the white way of life, and her wish to have blue eyes, leading to her complete transgression into insanity.
Recitatif is a short story written by Toni Morrison about two girls, one African American and the other Caucasian, and their interactions with each other over the course of their lives. Which girl is which ethnicity is never revealed, but that only makes their interactions more relatable. Roberta and Twyla first meet in an orphanage after they are taken away from their mothers. They become fast friends, but when it comes time to leave the orphanage, the two quickly become distant. Over the years, Twyla and Roberta meet each other again many times, and each time, their relationship changes and they learn something new about each other.

Two young black girls -- Claudia and Pecola -- illuminate the combined power of externally imposed gender and racial definitions where the black female must not only deal with the black male's female but must contend with the white male's and the white female's black female, a double gender and racial bind. All the male definitions that applied to the white male's female apply, in intensified form, to the black male's, white male's and white female's black female. Whereas in the Howard Johnson’s Roberta had worn thick makeup and a halter top, in the market Roberta had “diamonds on her hand, a smart white summer dress” (Morrison 138). Instead of a cigarette she held “a bunch of asparagus and two cartons of fancy water” (Morrison 138). In the second meeting Roberta was genuinely excited to see Twyla. Roberta’s varied reactions upon meeting Twyla mark her as a round character because you never know exactly what to expect when the two characters meet again. Twyla and Roberta met again when Roberta was protesting against her children changing schools for racial reasons.
