Contemporary Issues in Cognitive Developmental Psychology
The stage in which a child learns is very important in psychology.
Piaget, Vygotsky, and Bruner are the most popular psychologists who
have contributed to developmental learning.
The issue still among psychologists today is the debate on teaching,
and how children should be taught.
There is the, "talk and chalk" method where the teacher teaches the
whole class interactively and the children can participate when asked
to. Piaget believed in student centred learning and not group
learning. The advantage of this method of teaching is that they are
all going up a level at the same time; there might be a few that fail
to follow but the teacher can push them. Children can also start to
interact with each other and get to know other people in their
classroom. This could also reduce prejudice at a young age. If they
work as a group they also learn as a group, but the downside of this
is they may lose their sense of individuality. And as a group they may
feel as, "one." If they were to do a practical there would be one
child who would be the leader, which would not benefit to the other
children.
The other method of teaching is the individual/ group method. This is
where Piaget's individual learning programme enters. Vygotsky's spiral
curriculum would be useful in this method since it opens complex ideas
so that they can be presented at simplified levels. Each student
should find their zone of actual development and then the teacher
should be the outer circle so they can go to their zone of proximal
development. The disadvantage of this is the cost of student centred
learning. At the moment we have whole class teaching and there are the
ups and downs of that but if the individual learning took place it
will improve due to the individuals needs being noticed and processed.
Individual learning can also be structured by scaffolding so the
child's attempt to understand new ideas will be done with even more

Normally in a group, the work will be divided into the number of members in the group and may be arranged to each of the members to receive the part where they are more confident and have more knowledge of it. In addition, if a member is confused with their work, he can receive assistance from his teammates rather than just being alone and figure it himself independently. However, I believe sometimes been in a group can have its cons. A common pitfall associated with working as a group is disagreement about the way something is being done, a particular issue, or an opinion. Sometimes one member might have his own beliefs and want to perform a task in their way and conflict can arise from this. Once conflict arises, the members can discuss their own opinions and might arrive to a solution, but this can cause a member to not show their full potential because something was not done the way they wanted. To begin, my observation was at Webster Elementary School, a school placed in the city surrounded by houses and other schools. The specific classroom I am observing is full of Kindergarten students who seem to very advanced than I had imagined. The classroom walls are brick and white, but the classroom teacher Mrs. O'Brien does an amazing job keeping the space use for both an upbeat and educational vibe, especially for environmental print. In this semester, we are learn a lot of knowledge about ourselves, start from an infant to early adulthood. We know that, some of our behavior are development since we are infants such as intimacy with others. Other than that, we learned that most of our emotional development are more likely same as stated in Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development stages. In this report, we are using Bandura Social Learning Theory, Treisman’s Filter Model of attention, and information processing theory to explain the cognitive development in our group member and using Erik Erikson’s intimacy versus isolation theory to discuss the emotional development in relation with friendship and family.

I took this class because it aligns with other studies I have done. I have completed life coaching certificates and other psychology and mental classes. My expectations for this class are to learn what it means to educate and be educated. In life and business, I can see where understanding individual and/or group motivations can help show the bigger picture and give ideas on how to proceed.
My goal as a teacher is to improve my student’s education and help them grow knowledgably. I like to see students at different levels develop with each other and learn. I want to challenge the students and watch them grow to their highest level of education. Therefore, having the students in groups is the best educational strategy I like to use a lot. I want my students to have freedom with whatever creativity they want, and to allow them to express themselves at any time. With this freedom students will be able to experiment with likes and dislikes and be able to figure their weaknesses and strengths. Education is for everyone and it’s a right by low for all; teachers, on the other hand, should do their jobs very honestly and effectively.
