I went to Linwood Holton elementary school for my Community Engagement Week. I went there from Tuesday, February 7 to Thursday, February 9. The teacher I helped out in the classroom was Mr. Johnson who was a exceptionally nice guy that taught fourth grade. I enjoyed helping out the students there and bonding with each and every student. As the week went on I felt more and more connected with the children. At first I was a little nervous about what they would think of me and how would I help in their classroom. My favorite part of everyday was the recess with the students. I could play basketball, soccer, football, and more with all the children and I got to see the real side of them. All of the children seemed like they were having a amazing time there everyday. They were very respected by always calling me Mr. Whitehead, and they also looked very formal with their shirt tails always tucked in. A lot of these students had trouble with the material they were learning especially with Math. Almost every single kid had a question of some sort. I was focusing on helping one student the whole time. While I was helping her other kids were trying to also get help from me because Mr. Johnson could not help everyone else. Recess was extremely fun, but there was only two teachers monitoring about 70 kids. I did not go to the fourth grade recess because I had to go before then. Instead I went to the 5th grade recess. The fourth grade might have been different, but in the fifth grade recess some of the kids got into fights that had to broken up by me. They teachers did not really focus on the children during recess too. They just talked to each other while the children were roaming everywhere doing whatever they wanted. The Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County is located in Forrest County, Mississippi. This public library system is headquartered in Hattiesburg, MS, and has an additional branch in Petal, MS. The library began serving the reading needs of the community with a circulating collection of books in 1916. Later that year it relocated to the lounge of the first floor of the Forrest County Courthouse. During World War I, the American Library Association established twelve branch libraries in Hattiesburg to serve citizens and soldiers at Camp Shelby. Then the first public library building was dedicated on Main Street Hattiesburg in May 1930. The current building was opened in March 1996 and is located at 329 Hardy Street. The library features tributes to the state in the Mississippi Tower, Mississippi Room, Genealogy and Observation Level and the Author’s Walk honoring great Mississippi authors. The centerpiece is The Spirit that Builds, a 10-foot-high, 167-foot-around mural which hangs 30 feet above the circulation desk. In conclusion, my first impression was wrong, the classroom was not some kind of battlefield of teacher and student casualties. The students were not a lost cause that I imagine them to be. The students were well mannered and just wanted to be treated with respect. The classroom management was impeccable and astounding. It goes to show that although you may think you know a group of students you can be very mistaken.
Being in a little community and little school, 150 in the graduating class, made it nice that there was constantly a lot of school spirit and the community was constantly included in everything the school had been going on such as; any games for any kind of sports, any fundraisers or any volunteer work that needed to be done. All the students and teachers were greatly welcoming; it wasn’t highly diverse at all. If I had graduated from there, there would have been only four African Americans in my graduating class. From experience and in my opinion, racism is a big cause of violence and causes more drugs; this school didn’t have any violence and very little drug use from what I saw of students. Everyone knowing everyone made it easier for everyone to get along, there was never much drama, even being a girl.

When I first got to the classroom the students were doing a listening exercise and had to answer same question the teacher wrote on the board. At a certain time they all were allowed to go to the bathroom. Each student was given a responsibility in the classroom.

My first community engagement for the fall semester was Discoverfest at school. It was a day dedicated to students to walk around and learn more about different clubs and organizations at school. It was a public event open to all students at California State University of Fullerton to join different clubs. Discoverfest took place the 2nd and 3rd of September, from 11:30am to 2:00pm. All the different clubs and organizations were in different booths promoting their clubs with different posters, huge letters from sororities.
The community engagement project is a tool that has shown me how realistic the concepts I’ve learned in my core classes are to society and the city I live in. The purpose of this project is to apply concepts we learned in class to the real world and to help connect our individual experiences to greater contexts such as what we are majoring in college or what we plan to do for our professional career. Some of my personal goals include working in a field where I can be hands on and gain a more global perspective by helping foreign, underdeveloped countries. By having a clear understanding of how the church tries to fight societal injustices and understanding how communities can work towards fulfilling our human rights, I can be more successful
Community engagement is the active participation of local residents and community groups in the decisions that affect their lives (Herefordshire Council, 2013). Therefore, community engagement should be about engaging in open communication to ensure the council understands the needs of the local community.
I really enjoyed teaching the lesson; I tried to make sure that the students could relate to prior knowledge and real world situations. I tried to pick activities that were developmental sound for a second grader. I wanted to make sure that the students have an understanding of the standards in which they must master. During my Social Studies lesson I tried to ask the students opened ended questions to promote higher order thinking. I taught the students about map skills.
The teachers of the school were very supportive, I loved them all. Being at school is very good in terms of dealing with different people. We were exposed very early to this world; where there are different attitudes and beliefs. I think having teachers with totally different minds has a role in our social intelligence development. I learned how to deal with people even if their beliefs, thoughts and styles do not meet mine.
I thought that the teachers did a nice job with their classroom set up. I felt like I could have kept myself busy all day just by looking at the walls and seeing the pictures of presidents and famous historic quotes by famous people of our nations past. One thing I really enjoyed was the time the teachers allotted me at the end of each class to reflect to the class. Not only throughout my past middle school, and high school experiences but also, and most importantly, my current college experiences, the temptations that I have had to endure have definitely been rewarding.
