Ever since I have been a student living in the residence hall environment, the occupation of a community adviser is something that has been of my interest. When I first came to Iowa State my community adviser was someone who I could go to at any time whether just to talk, or to help me find an answer to a question I had about being a new student. As a community adviser, I would hope to be that someone that my residents could come to with any issues and be a positive influence. Being the floor president of Wallace Nuckolls has provided me with a great opportunity to develop my skills as a leader and communicator. While being the president I have planned major floor events like pumpkin painting and a fall holiday dinner party that brought most …show more content…
Following that, I would tell each of the girls to try their best to put their differences aside and focus on the things that they do have in common. Finding these things that they can relate to may be enough to put all their opposing religious beliefs and growing up in different settings in the back of their minds could form a friendship that they didn’t know could happen. If a friendship does form between the two roommates, then Kennedy, who was not involved with anything could develop an interest in joining Casey in some of her extracurricular activities. This alone, may help Kennedy feel more welcome on campus and build a more balanced life as a student. When the department of residence does open assignment changes I would then check in on the girls to see if they were still wanting to change assignments. If they did not form a friendship after all, then I would give them the steps to alter living spaces. To make a housing change, I would refer them to www.housing.iastate.edu/assignment/changes where it would give them the information to complete the process. Trying to be the best Community Adviser possible, I would walk them through step by step and guide them to AccessPlus and then further to the “Student” tab and under Campus Housing they could access their housing contract and select a new place to call
Ambassadors give tours to prospective high school freshman and give them a feel for what high school is all about. We would share experience and give advice to prospective students regarding classes, teachers, activities, and sports. I loved interacting with both students and parents and showing them how amazing my high school was, and I want to be able to do the same for Questrom. I am a very outgoing, independent, and a social individual, which are all important qualities Dean’s Hosts must possess when speaking to prospective students and their parents, as well as alumni and distinguished speakers. I enjoy speaking to and getting to know different people and I believe being sociable and friendly is one of the most important traits a Dean’s Host must
Upon arriving to college, many students face the challenge of finding a community to belong to. I believe the student affairs professionals on campus are the resource to building communities within the student body. Reflecting back on my first semester of college, I found my community within two organizations; Dance Marathon and UI Alumni Association Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.). Within the organizations I met two advisers who opened my eyes to the world of student affairs.
This level of advocacy for my residents comes from the heart and truly loving my residents for who they are. As an advocate for my first year students, I emphasize their potential and all of the great things they are getting involved with as first year students, such as, fraternity and sorority life, engineering clubs, acapella groups, residence life and so much more. Advocating for residents to become part of a community is very important because this allows my residents to find a home at UCF, whether it is in the Department of Housing and Residence Life or another group on campus. Looking into the future, my role as an advocate will change going into my living learning community and working with upperclassmen. My students in my living learning community will not only need me to be an advocate for them as diverse individuals, but they also get to see me as an advocate for certain issues. For my upperclassmen who are not a part of the living learning community, I am an advocate for them when they need to me to be there for them. I will present myself as an aid to them and allow them to decide how involved they want me to be in their time living in on campus
I have done this by having group bonding activities often as well as appearing warm and welcoming to all, especially those who do not appear at our activities in order to make them feel included at all times. If made a Resident Assistant, I plan to go further than this and try to encourage the residents to open their doors more often in order to appear more welcoming to each other. I will also keep working hard on inventive group bonding activities. I find that more work can always be done in order to create lasting bonds between residents. Most importantly, I have grown to understand that even though we refer to our residence halls as our dorm, or simply “school”, the truth of the matter is that these residence halls and the college itself, is our home. Above all else, I hope to bring every sense of the word into reality for any future residents that I may
Indira Buzaljko is the assistant principle at Anixter Stuart G Ferst Center, which educates mentally challenged youth. It is located on 2001 N. Clybourn Ave. on the third floor 3rd Floor.
I would plan weekly activities to bring everyone together, to help students make friends and network their way around campus. People can learn so much from each other, and just bring them together would create a positive environment. I would also personally met and get to know each resident to create a relationship, that way they would feel comfortable with letting me know if they
Pages 94 - 108 discuss the floor and how the girls interacted with one another upon move in day and throughout the semester. The section begins with a description of Alana who felt a lack of connection with the girls on her floor. The other girls on her floor had only hung out with her once, and they used her as a designated driver causing Alana to not want to return to MU her sophomore year. By the end of the year, half the floor were defined as isolates including Alana because they can only claim one other friend (other than roommate) on the floor. Eighteen of these twenty five women were from less privileged families. They are “less likely to have the funds, time, social tastes, and knowledge necessary to successfully engage in college social life” causing them to have trouble fitting in (Armstrong/Hamilton, 96).
I want to be a member of Senior Class Cabinet to increase Darby pride and continue to lead within Darby, while also creating new events to make senior year the best it can be. I have been at Darby for nearly three years now, and every year the senior class, and specifically Senior Class Cabinet, are constantly finding ways to encourage younger students to get involved within the school, while also continuing to make their own senior year more memorable. During my time thus far at Darby, the upperclassmen have shaped my ideas and thoughts about Daby, while also teaching me that what you get out of the high school experience is exactly what you put into it. While not everyone may get involved in school spirit, doing so creates a more upbeat atmosphere and creates a more memorable experience. By getting involved in Senior Class Cabinet, we can portray a similar message to
Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
I believe the role of the Resident Assistant is to first be a witness of a hard-working student, a committed friend, and a leader at Holy Cross College. The importance of being a hard-working student as an RA is to set expectations in your floor or dorm high in terms of effort towards a cultivation of the mind because that is the main reason we go to college. However, I feel the most important aspect is to be a committed friend. To be committed is to be an to talk or give advice any time and any day of the school year, but also to be able to discipline them when they have broken the rules because a RA should want their friends to mature into an adult in college so that they learn how to be self-discipline before they are sent out into the "real
As the Housing Administration of Penn State, I ask you to put yourself in the shoes of the incoming freshmen. As a freshman, you hope for a roommate you can relate to and spend your time with. But at Penn State the chances of you getting along with your roommate are slim to none. I know so many people who cannot stand living with their roommates. Two of my friends actually switched at the semester because they could not deal with their living situation. At Penn State we are placed together by major. Two people with the same major are not guaranteed to have any of the same habits, interests, or goals. I feel that this is not an effective way of matching people up.
...ole, the female students became close when they became true to themselves and the cliques begin to blend. For example, Gretchen, one of the Plastics became close friends with the Asian students. Social acceptance should not be the most important thing in anyone’s life. Always wanting this acceptance will cause people to change into someone they are not.
I want to be able to provide guidance and support, as well as fun opportunities such as the Freshmen Flotilla and Bedtime Stories, in order to foster a sense of community amongst students and faculty. I have noticed that many of my friends that I lived with the Honors dorm who moved to live off campus have become disconnected with the community of the Honors College, and I would love to make an impact by keeping older students involved. I hope that I will be also be able to impact USC helping make the student population grow through helping to encourage prospective students to come here and answer any questions they have that might cause hesitation or delay. Overall, I would like to help create an accepting and accessible environment to
Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. This year, I am the Spirit Leader of Student Council encouraging monthly goals and themes and assisting in school events. From creating a student council with a group of peers three years ago we have had success in many events and have found new ways to spread spirit, gather important information and assist with financial groups. Recently, I stepped up to be the leader of the fundraising committee for our ...
The entire community plays an essential role in the growth and development of children within our community. As a school leader, building an inclusive school culture that is open and friendly to all stakeholders using a variety of effective methods is crucial. There is no magic formula to incorporating a positive school culture, much depends on the leadership of the campus. The leadership on campus cultivates the climate providing support and respect for everyone invested in the student’s education.
