“Determination” is a word often overlooked. Nowadays, it tends to be ignored in favor of “perfection” and “effortless”. Where drive and vision were valued qualities in America’s infancy, the ease of technology and the ever-climbing ceiling on success has blinded society to the value of a hard day’s work. In fact, America’s own foundation is often overlooked; where would our nation be if not for the determination of our first colonists? As our superpower status is only augmented, our aim is not vision, but an unfettered and flawless ascent. This same aversion to challenge is often a tenant of academia. The International Baccalaureate Program is a renowned culprit. While the curriculum aims to cultivate an iron-strong work ethic and inspire comprehensive vision, many of its students desire only to glide effortlessly at the top. Where minimized effort is often emulated, valuable assets like drive and hard work are often overlooked or even ridiculed. Where determination has slipped from the expansive American vocabulary, it is the driving note of mine. Striving, an incessant push from ordinary to extraordinary, is the foundation of my personality. As early as elementary school, I was spending hours each weeknight, bent over papers, pencil in fisted grip, demonstrating my will to learn, even as my …show more content…
I strive for musical and athletic excellence in our school’s top ensembles and in varsity swimming, despite availability of time and money. I drive for an improved community: alongside dedicated classmates, I have started a civic action project, inspiring voting in the youngest demographic. Where many would be content with stagnation, I actively seek renewal, the hope for a better future. Just this semester, I log more than 24 hours a week instructing swim lessons at our community’s recreation center in addition to academic and collegiate demands. Despite challenges, I have always made time for these
Determination is “The act or an instance of making an important decision and not giving up” (“Determination”). In The Great Gatsby, the main character Jay Gatsby is a succesful business man who will go to extremes to win the heart of the woman of his dreams, Daisy, hoping she would leave her husband for him. Gatsby threw extravagant parties with an abundance of alcohol and a variety of people. People would drive hundreds of miles to attend one of Jay Gatsby’s parties. He would never participate in any of his parties, however, so no one knew him. One may ask: Why would he spend so much money on parties he did not even participate in? The answer is that he would stand on the balcony looking over his unknown party guests hoping Daisy would show up one evening. Gatsby was very determined to get the attention of Daisy, and he believed by throwing these parties he would do so. He was so anxious to see her; he had his neighbor Nick invite her over one afternoon. He had been very nervous and wanted eve...
Ever since I was a young student, teachers knew that I was not a normal kid. These teachers saw qualities in me that they could not see in many students at that age level. They saw a child who had a profound love to know more and had the ambition of a decorated Olympic swimmer to learn not just the material that was being taught but why it is being taught and how I can I use this information to make people’s lives better. Fast-forward to today, and you can clearly see that not much has changed except my determination to learn and my love to help others has done nothing but expanded.
I, Hope Turnbull, am a Senior of Stockton High School in Stockton Kansas. My plans consist of attending North Central Kansas Technical College starting Fall 2016, where I want to begin my study of nursing. Due to me having all of my general education courses finished upon my college arrival, I have been accepted into the first year Nursing Program (LPN). I believe that I deserve this scholarship due to me excelling in my education at a very young age. My grades are earned as A’s and B’s in school.
In the text it says, “Determination is a character trait where you are intent on achieving a goal” (Kurtus 1). Being an athlete, it is very important to be determined. In order to get better at a skill, whether it’s in life or in athletics, the person needs to have drive and purpose. The text explains a person that possesses determination by saying, “A person who is determined has a firmness of purpose and the resolve to achieve a goal. It is a fixed intention or resolution to overcome obstacles” (Kurtus 1). In order for Biles to be able to compete in the Olympics, she needed to work twice as hard as anyone else. Being a girl, it wasn’t going to be easy. Giving up was not an option. Although it would have been easy to give up, Biles trained six days a week and persevered to become one of the most famous gymnasts the world has seen in a long time. “One major benefit of being determined is that you achieve what you set out to do. If it was a good goal, you will reap the benefits of that achievement. Other people can have a positive opinion of you. A person who is steadfast and determined to achieve an honorable goal is admired as having good character. There is personal satisfaction in achieving what you set out to achieve. And that achievement can make you feel like a champion”, (Kurtus 2), the text

A better example of determination would the creation of facebook. I’ve been reading an article titled only “Facebook” detailing the many challenges Mark Zuckerberg had to navigate past to see facebook come to the public with being sued or worse. Now net worth is estimated at $19 billion (according to the same article from Britannica). All this due to his
My strong determination and tenacious will power are demonstrated on a daily basis. It is displayed in every aspect of my life. Strong determination is displayed in my school, in just the sole basis of me coming back to school and wanting to do better in my life. It’s also displayed in home life, in ways like creating the best possible environment for me along with my family.
1.What first inspired you to pursue this profession? Was it the kitchen set my mom bought me when I was four or was it the incredible smells coming from our kitchen that always brought family and friends together? What I do know is that cooking always held a sense of fascination and intrigue for me. From a young age, I remember having an obsession with the creation of a restaurant. I can recall drafting menu after menu.
I am the perfect candidate for the BRITE scholarship because I see what the future has in store because of great scientist and researchers. Helping the sick has always been one of my dreams in life. From the time I was in kindergarten until now, I always knew the type of career I wanted to have. Whether it was being a pediatric surgeon, a forensic scientist, pharmacologist or a pharmacist. I knew that I wanted to have a hands on career in the health and science field. There was always something about the everyday discoveries and the opportunity to learn so much about our everyday life through science that I have always been drawn to. Not only do I want to help people get well in my lifetime but I also would like to make new discoveries that
There are two things in my life that have profoundly helped to shape me into the person I am today. One of them, the fact that I am a swimmer, has been a tremendous benefit for me in regards to evolving behaviors that are assets to life, and giving me many opportunities to give back to the community with volunteer work. The other may not seem quite as valuable to the mere onlooker, but it is just as important, if not more important to the way my life has turned out so far; I come from a military family. Both of these facts have facilitated my development of life experiences and qualities that are unique, which have helped me and will continue to help me as I pursue professional endeavors. Although swimming may not be an academic extra-curricular
I was born into an upper-middle class white family from a quaint beach community in San Diego. My education has never been hindered by issues of safety or an insufficient money supply. I have always known when my next meal will be, and I’ve always been supported in my goals. The capital within my hometown community as well as the social forces of my race and wealth have assisted me in my available opportunities. Because of my privileged upbringing, I had large amounts of time (because I did not have to work to support my family) and excess wealth (money that didn’t need to be spent on necessities) that I was able to use to give back.

Growing up, I was immersed in agriculture and the way of farm life. I was taught that if you want something, you have to work for it. Learning how to work growing up inspired me to keep working towards my dreams, no matter how big they may seem. My dream since I was young was to help people. I always wanted to help people to be healthy, strong, and confident in who they are.
I would firstly like to recognize God´s sovereignty in my life and that without His mercy towards me I wouldn’t be anything. Since I was born, my parents’ main concern was to teach me how to live the Christian lifestyle and obtain qualities like honesty, responsibility, and perseverance. I learned to be independent from a very young age since my parents couldn’t always help me with my homework or school related chores; but that shaped me to become what I am now, an organized and determined teenager. I discovered I loved writing poetry and short stories since I was a little girl. I had a big imagination and a thirst for knowledge that has stayed with me ever since.
Academic excellence is thought to be a very high-prioritized achievement in today’s society, and in order to reach many goals of success knowledge is the key. Although knowledge is very helpful, without grit you will never achieve great things.
