Every athlete, of any sport, dreams of going to college on a full ride scholarship and most of all a degree. They dream of playing the sport they love and getting a education that will take them anywhere. Most athletes know that sports will only take them so far so they want a degree as well. There are always going to be obstacles on your road to success. You have to know how to overcome that and stay focused on your dream. If your dream is a real dream that you really want, you wouldn’t let anything stop you from achieving that dream.
These dream scholarships don’t come easy. You can be an exceptional athlete and not get any college scholarships or offers because you don’t have the grades. My moms and pops always tell me, “You can’t go anywhere without the books...” and, “Football isn’t going to last forever--you always have to have a back plan for football.”Grades are the most important part of getting a scholarship. Especially when it comes to getting a degree. No one can take away that accomplishment away from you.A degree is something hard

My cousins Cory Butler-Byrd (former Utah receiver/ defensive back #16)and Troy Williams (Utah quarterback #3) both went to the University of Utah on a full ride scholarship and the both of them got a masters degree from the University.Other athletes such as Emmitt Smith (Hall of Fame,Dallas Cowboys running back #22),Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback #7), Troy Polamalu (Former Pittsburgh Steeler strong safety #43), are athletes that didn’t stay in college for all years and went back to finish and get their masters. These degrees can get you a good paying job that will help pay your bills and also take care of a
College athletes have a goal that they pursue. The jump to the professional sports leagues is an accomplishment that most college athletes wanted to achieve. But most college athletes go to college and forego completing their senior year and don’t get a degree. In basketball most athletes are one and done. This means they go to college for only one year then enter the NBA draft. For the NFL players have to be out of high school for three years and necessarily don’t have to go to college.
When College athletes are recruited to college, most of the time they receive a four year scholarship to go to that university. Why not take advantage and use that four year scholarship to major in some profession. This ensures that if something were to happen down the road in the athletes professional career they would have a backup job. This would be the smartest idea because many athletes endure career ending injuries. With no education they have no job to fall back on, resulting in bankruptcy.
...make time to study, be involved in college campus activities, work part-time and participate in athletics in order to succeed. Not having to deal with the pressures and status of being a paid professional will allow the student-athlete to focus more on the sport than on all the legalities of the sport. Leaning to set goals and achieve them as a student-athlete will help them become a well rounded individual.
A non-athlete is no different than an athlete. An athlete has it just as hard as someone who is studying to be a big time lawyer, military, and a doctor. Toda I am here to convince you that there isn’t anything holding you back from your dreams except you. I want all of you athletes to keep in mind that success is no greater than failure, I rather be a failure who tried than a failure who gave up on his
For starters, the acceptance to a college is easier if they are trying to recruit an athlete even if they do not have the grades. One usually tends to bend the rules a little, therefore they have the ability to play for their college even though the school’s regular academic requirements might not be met. Although very few schoo...
The chances of becoming a professional athlete are very low, and the chances of getting injuries are high. Being an athlete could lead to you being unemployed. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, “Of the nearly 8 million students currently participating in high school athletics in the United States, only 480,000 of them will compete at NCAA schools” (Probability of competing beyond high school). Even though there are many student athletes, the number of spots for college sports is a lot less. This shows that you cannot rely on just your athletic skills because only a few athletes will make it, and become a college athlete. NCAA also found that of all the NCAA college football athletes only 1.6% become professional athletes (Estimated probability of competing in professional athletics). Even with the tiny chances of becoming a professional athlete, somehow you become a professional athlete, the chances of becoming injured are very high. The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated, “professional athletes were among five occupations that had more than 1,000 injuries per 10,000 workers. Athletes and sports competitors suffer more than 2,000 injuries per 10,000 workers” (Fitzgerald). This shows that after becoming one of the 480,000 NCAA college athletes and becoming some of the few professional athletes you still have a big chance of getting an injury that could end your career. Becoming a professional athlete is a very risky job that most student athletes might not even
Scholarships play a large role in the commitment of student-athletes to a certain college, as they can
For most Americans, the goal of attending college is drilled into our minds at a young age. It seems to be one of the ultimate dreams for parents to have their child grow up and attend the best university in the country. Once students near the end of their high school education, college is a major conversation topic. The pressure to choose the college of best fit can be daunting. Do I want a large university or a smaller technical school? Do they have my major? How about on-campus housing? How costly are the schools? Am I too close to home? Or too far? So many questions, many I did not always know the answers to when asked. According to The College Board, there are almost four thousand colleges to choose from around the world. So, how do you
Going to college is such a stressful time in a person’s life. You have to go through the process of finding what school you want to go to and what you are going to study. Figuring that out has to be difficult because they may be unsure if they are going to make the right decision or not. Now imagine going through the process of picking the best school for yourself and what you are going to study, and add playing a sport on top of that stress as well. You play a sport all throughout your childhood and high school, you do not want to give that up as you go away to college. You decide you are going to go to college to play that sport, not only do you want to play that sport, you also want to go to a Division Ι school and compete at the highest
Colleges demand a well-rounded resume that students are trying to fulfill so they can get accepted to the college or university they desire most. “We know schools and families are embedded in society and are responding to its changing requirements and demands, with respect to the competitiveness to the college admissions process, the kinds of skills needed to succeed in the workforce, and even uncertainties in the global economy” (NYU Study Examines), in a study, students from a big university admit to finding that students are becoming more stressed out because of college pressures while still in high school. Colleges are trying to find the students that can succeed in both academics and extracurricular activities. Once students get into college, student athletes can buy a book written by Carl I. Fertman appropriately titled Student Athlete Success – Meeting the Challenges of College Life, to help organize their priorities with their busy schedule. This is a work book that allows the college athletes relate to other college athletes that feel the same way they do. College has its own set of challenges that high school students usually do not face, so this book would help the students cope with these new challenges. In the first section, there is a heading that is labeled “What Student-Athletes Say” with a list of common quotes from student athletes themselves. For example “Sometimes I feel like student athletes have extra pressure and greater expectations placed on them than other students. Everyone knows who we are and people are looking at us to catch us doing something wrong”. (2), which shows how students that do participate in sports feel as though they have added pressure because they are so well known in most cases. Although they do commit to being more known than a regular student when they join a sports team, it is often not fair to the
(“Athletic scholarships”). After receiving a scholarship, athletes must maintain a 3.5 gpa to stay on the team. If grades fall, you will get kicked off the team and not be able to return until you get your grades up and try out the following year. People with average grades can get a scholarship too. You do not have to be the best person in your class but, good grades help a lot and looks better on your tryout form.
Although, requiring good grades to play sports can hold athletes to a specific standard that they may not be able to sustain, it is important to require good grades because Not being strong academically decreases their chance at going to a good college, Good grades can give many financial benefit, and coaches
Tabarak Alomar Mrs. Hutton ENG 101 April 10, 2018 College Tuition What comes in mind when you hear of free college tuition? It’s a question that is more relevant in today’s society than ever before. Many people have different, passionate opinions on this topic. College affordability is a big concern when it comes to money on education. About a century ago high school public schools became a necessity, not a luxury.
For their future Professional athletes need to have a backup plan. They need to pursue education, or a trade. Professional athletes can train as a mechanic or an electrician in case they become injured or homeless. Before becoming a Professional athlete, they should have a High school degree then go on to college. Athletes should be encouraged to have a four year plan for their college education in the career they chose.
This means that coaches do not have any other choice but to only accept the students with good grades.” (Rajan). This shows that in high school, if you would like to play a sport at a high level, then you really need to get good grades. Many people think that you can not do well in classes and get a full athletic scholarship because the academic side of the scholarships don’t matter. Well, as Rajan said any NCAA school (like Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI) require standards in the ACT and SAT as well as having good
