Colleges have standards for grades as well, and just because you're a good athlete doesn't mean you can get into any college you want. Athletics are not enough to get an athletic scholarship either, a student athlete would also need to have certain grades. But for students athletes that have good grades, they have a better chance of getting scholarships. According to the The National Collegiate Athletic Association, “The new minimum GPA goes up from 2.0 to 2.3,” for 2016 and later graduates to be accepted into college (Frank). The standards are going up and they should keep going up to a B average as well. But even with a minimum of a 2.3 GPA most college scouts won’t consider those athletes as a person to give a scholarship to. If colleges are holding higher requirements for grades to be higher, athletes should be held up to a higher standard for grades. According to Athnet, “Coaches do not look for students who possess athletic abilities only... Students who demonstrate high ethics and abilities in both athletics and academics are more apt to receive athletic scholarships” (Academic Scholarships for Athletes). Colleges do not only look for star athletes, they want well-rounded athletes who can study hard. College scouts want to know that the student would work hard. With a minimum GPA, scouts would be likely to assume that the student would slack off and not take their studies seriously. The better grades an athlete has, the more likely they are to get an athletic scholarship. The majority of student athletes want to be professional athletes when they grow up, which is very unlikely and not a stable career.
The chances of becoming a professional athlete are very low, and the chances of getting injuries are high. Being an athlete could lead to you being unemployed. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, “Of the nearly 8 million students currently participating in high school athletics in the United States, only 480,000 of them will compete at NCAA schools” (Probability of competing beyond high school). Even though there are many student athletes, the number of spots for college sports is a lot less. This shows that you cannot rely on just your athletic skills because only a few athletes will make it, and become a college athlete. NCAA also found that of all the NCAA college football athletes only 1.6% become professional athletes (Estimated probability of competing in professional athletics). Even with the tiny chances of becoming a professional athlete, somehow you become a professional athlete, the chances of becoming injured are very high. The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated, “professional athletes were among five occupations that had more than 1,000 injuries per 10,000 workers. Athletes and sports competitors suffer more than 2,000 injuries per 10,000 workers” (Fitzgerald). This shows that after becoming one of the 480,000 NCAA college athletes and becoming some of the few professional athletes you still have a big chance of getting an injury that could end your career. Becoming a professional athlete is a very risky job that most student athletes might not even
get. People might argue that student athletes may feel overwhelmed with academics and athletics and managing the two is too much to handle. This does not consider that, student athletes who really do love sports are willing to put in the time and effort to study. Fleming states, “The statistics for this research were from a suburban school district’s 2015 graduating class of 393 students. The results showed that student athletes (3.28) have a significantly higher GPA in comparison to non-student athletes (2.98)” (Fleming). This study showed that student athletes are capable of getting good grades and that if being on the honor roll is required to participate in games most student athletes did get in the honor roll. People are underestimating student athletes by setting low standards for their grades. Not only did the average GPA for student athletes in that study meet the standards for the honor roll, but the athletes had a significantly better GPA than non-student athletes. By making it required to be on the honor roll for athletes to play in games, athletes were more motivated to study and get good grades. Schools should require student athletes to be on the honor roll to play in games. Grades are very important for athletes who want to get into a college to play for and to get scholarships. Trying to become a professional athlete is very risky without an educational foundation to rely on. You would have a big chance of becoming unemployed. Student athletes are also more capable than people give them credit for. All schools should make it required for student athletes to be on the honor roll, to benefit them in the future.
When College athletes are recruited to college, most of the time they receive a four year scholarship to go to that university. Why not take advantage and use that four year scholarship to major in some profession. This ensures that if something were to happen down the road in the athletes professional career they would have a backup job. This would be the smartest idea because many athletes endure career ending injuries. With no education they have no job to fall back on, resulting in bankruptcy.
Dr. Pietro Tonino stated that “College athletes are putting themselves at risk for health problems that could persist long after they graduate.” (sciencedaily.com). The college athletes today risk their health when they step onto the court or field for their college, and get little in return. According to sciencedaly.com, there was a study published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine. Researches at Indiana University organized an analysis of two groups of people. One crowd was made up of middle-aged college graduates who played division one sports. The supplemented group comprised of middle-aged college graduates who did not participate in sports. The study showed they were in much poorer physical condition, and agonized from a number of things including depression, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. The non-athletes portrayed much less signs of wear and tear.
Throughout the country young men and women are losing their priority for an education. To attend a university should be a highly cherished privilege, and it should be an even greater honor to play athletics for the university. Therefore, the writer supports the decision that the “student” comes before “athlete” in student-athlete. Playing for pay should be considered a job for “professionals”. In the rulebook, the NCAA views college athletes as armatures. This statement sums it up best. When athletes go to college, not all of them go in with the mindset that athletics is going to be their future job....

A handful of athletes will have a chance to turn pro before they have completed their college career. Job-wise there is nothing better than getting paid for doing something that you truly love and enjoy. There is nothing wrong with players doing everything in their power to make them go pro. However it is a decision bound with peril.
College sports are a major revenue producing industry. Athletic programs and their student-athletes can achieve national recognition and generate millions of dollars in revenue for their university. Colleges use this revenue to invest in players, pay for their education, and provide state of the art training facilities, which are used to improve their athletic performance. As revenue driven colleges begin to prioritize athletics, the emphasis on the quality and standards of an undergraduate education are diminishing. Compromising their academic acceptance requirements, universities have now found that the educational ability of their newly accepted student athletes are inadequate, to say the least (Gurney). Playing a sport in college is equivalent to working a full-time job (Thomas). There are rules that allow major-college football coaches to only demand twenty hours of the players time each week (Wieberg). However, studies show that those athletes are doubling those hours per week during the season (Wieberg). Other sports are putting in the equivalent of a full time work week (Wieberg). Some NCAA officials are concerned with the amount of time spent stating that beyond forty hours is inhumane (Wieberg). Most of the athletes compete and do whatever it takes to succeed, so they enjoy spending countless hours on sports (Wieberg). With those statistics, I think it’s safe to say that being a collegiate athlete requires more than a full time job. Trying to keep up with homework and attendance in class poses many challenges especially when the NCAA requires students to miss class for championship games, televised games, or other events that bring in revenue for the school. Growing up in America sport is a vital part of everyday life. From childhood to adulthood some aspect of sport pertains to virtually everyone. As a child one is looking to find a hobby so they play sports. As a parent fathers look forward to coaching their child’s little league team. And as tens and young adults sports are an opportunity to become a “somebody” and do something amazing. The general perception in high school and college is that athletes have it all. Colleges demand a well-rounded resume that students are trying to fulfill so they can get accepted to the college or university they desire most. “We know schools and families are embedded in society and are responding to its changing requirements and demands, with respect to the competitiveness to the college admissions process, the kinds of skills needed to succeed in the workforce, and even uncertainties in the global economy” (NYU Study Examines), in a study, students from a big university admit to finding that students are becoming more stressed out because of college pressures while still in high school. Colleges are trying to find the students that can succeed in both academics and extracurricular activities. Once students get into college, student athletes can buy a book written by Carl I. Fertman appropriately titled Student Athlete Success – Meeting the Challenges of College Life, to help organize their priorities with their busy schedule. This is a work book that allows the college athletes relate to other college athletes that feel the same way they do. College has its own set of challenges that high school students usually do not face, so this book would help the students cope with these new challenges. In the first section, there is a heading that is labeled “What Student-Athletes Say” with a list of common quotes from student athletes themselves. For example “Sometimes I feel like student athletes have extra pressure and greater expectations placed on them than other students. Everyone knows who we are and people are looking at us to catch us doing something wrong”. (2), which shows how students that do participate in sports feel as though they have added pressure because they are so well known in most cases. From the very beginning of organized college level athletics, the goal to want to succeed in athletics has forced students to put academics to the back burner. In spite of the goal to want to succeed over a hundred years of attempts to check limits of intercollegiate athletic programs on colleges' academic standards still seems to struggle to this day. This brings to surface one of the most asked questions in sports, “What effect does college sports have on academics and economics?” Herbert D. Simons, Derek Van Rheenen, and Martin V. Covington, authors of “Academic Motivation and the Student Athlete” researched the topic on whether athletics and academics benefit each other. Bryan Flynn, the author of “College Sports vs. Academics” poses the question “Should institutions of higher learning continue to involve themselves in athletic programs that often turn out to be virtual arms races for recruiting talented players who bring big money and prestige, but put academics to the back burner?” Although both authors agree that sports have an impact on an athlete’s academics, the focus of their argument differs.
