If my life could be described in one word, I would say it’s a puzzle. I was always attracted to the tiny pieces, intrigued by their shapes, challenged by the complexity, and in awe of the final work of art. Nobody finds a puzzle premade and same goes for life. Over time, as I attempted to put life’s puzzle together, I realized that I must understand the previous piece to prepare for the placing of the next one.

To better adjust to the new way of life in America, I focused my efforts on learning English. My mom and I would walk two miles to the local library for English classes every afternoon; I would sit at the table with a stack of kindergarten level books trying to form words in English and my mom doing the same. By tirelessly improving my English, I began to advance in my studies and intuitively, by trying to accomplish my own goals, I began to fulfill my parents’ dreams. My dedication and resilience resulted in my acceptance into the advance academic …show more content…
My family helps me focus my goals, while I help them expand their horizons to the realm of their own possibilities. I focus on making sure my younger siblings don’t feel the burden and try to hold my health, school, and family responsibilities together, one step at a time. Each day is precious because I still have my family’s support and another opportunity to get closer to my dream of attaining higher education. Sometimes, I have to pause for a moment, go away from the puzzle, and then come back to it later with a stronger mind and a different perspective at attempting
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.

As I thought of this article, many of the issues I have faced as a single Hmong woman in her mid-twenties came to mind. Should I discuss the functional reasons why marriage is so important in the Hmong culture, especially for women? Or do I talk about the lack of eligible, older Hmong men? Better yet, should I complain about the attempts by my relatives to find me a good husband as if it were an unfortunate circumstance that I was single instead of a conscious choice? Thinking it over, though, I decided that all those questions boiled down to one fundamental truth – the Hmong community is still trying to learn how to treat the increasing number of Hmong women who, like me, are making the choice to stay single in their mid-twenties.
Whoever said that we were supposed to take everything on faith? Not God, that's for certain. He's always told us to try it for ourselves, and see if it makes our lives better. I'll never forget the day my high school chemistry teacher had a nervous breakdown because he tried to understand a universe where there was no God, whatsoever. (That is true, to my knowledge, by the way.)
A college degree is one of the best educations that a person can get. It not only develops your mind, but it helps to develop you as a person as well. No matter what kind of degree you receive, whether it be a bachelors, associates, or masters you are more likely to get a better job than without it or with just a high school diploma. Workers with a college degree will earn much more and are much less likely to be unemployed than those with only a high school diploma. This paper will argue that with a college degree you are more likely to get a higher paying job than without a degree. I will support this argument with multiple scholarly articles and other valid sources to further convince you.
A personal change I would like to make is my approach and the response I display to my teammates and the organization. I am a very independent person at work, I tend to be a controlling person in every aspect. However, I am trying to overcome this debilitating trait by learning new techniques and reflecting on the other person’s ideas, comments, efforts and suggestions without taking control. I do complete my task with little or no assistance, but it causes me to be detached, indifferent, and uninvolved from my teammates causing conflicting issues. I do sense a distance between myself and my teammates, but I continue to work hard and remain focus.
The experience of the APEC Youth Science festival was incredible. It has had an enormous impact on me in many ways, changing the way I look at the world and connecting me with people and events far beyond my formerly limited experience. I am extremely glad to have had this opportunity. It was a wonderful experience on multiple levels. It challenged me and expanded me intellectually and socially. I feel that this experience has had an immense impact on me.

As a child growing up in Communist China, I woke up every morning to the blasting of People's Central Broadcasting Station from a large radio on the dresser and fell asleep every evening in the surreptitious murmuring of Voices from America from a small radio by Grandpa's pillow. By fourth grade, I figured out that the two stations often reported the same events from opposite standpoints, using different words and tones, and thus projected contradictory interpretations onto the same events. Eager to share this revelation with my grandparents, I pointed out the differences between the two stations by singing their respective theme songs and by imitating the voices of their newscasters. To my disappointment, they were much more alarmed than amused. "Don't you talk nonsense in school," Grandma warned me. "You'll bring us trouble."
Weather I have to go to school for many more years. I very much have faith in myself. I was always taught to believe in myself. To believe that I actually have a meaning in this chaotic world. And as long as I believe that I have a purpose, I will always look forward and never back. I will keep my head up, and keep my eyes on the prize. Along the way, I may face some challenges, just like everyone else does. Things such as being stressed out on a daily basis. Which makes everything so much harder. But I have a very supportive family and tons of positive vibes around me. The one person that I can honestly say that keeps me going, is my grandfather. He has been so supportive of me ever since I was a mini me. And he’s still going till this day. He’s had my back since day one. You have no idea how proud I am to call him mine. He is the main reason why I will stay true to my belief. I would be upset in myself if i just gave up my dreams. But because of the potential that he sees in me. His inspiring words have struck me deep down and they got stuck. He says all the right things at the right times, and he doesn’t sugar coat things because in the real world, there’s no such thing as sugar coating. But my desideratum will help me accomplish so much in
In my household, from the time I was in Kindergarten, my mother expected academic excellence and nothing less. With her help I was an A student, Science fair grand champion, Young authors winner, Community helpers member, Young academic role model and more. At the age of eleven I lost my mother to Invasive Breast Cancer. Being academically successful was her goal for me and up to that point in her life she instilled the values of education and hard work ethic into me. At that young age I had to decide how I was going to continue being academically successful in school and what were my educational goals for myself. Since that day every school year I ask myself that same question, and this year being my senior year it’s more prominent than ever. My short term educational goals are: to apply and be admitted to 4 universities, maintain a 3.7 gpa, pass AP calc and English exam’s with a score of 4 or higher, and graduate with honors.
I never once in my life sat down with myself and really thought about what my parents had to go through and all the sacrifices they had to make in order to ensure that I have a better life and a brighter future. Thinking back now, the frustration I feel eats away at me constantly that I was not more thankful and did not do more to help. This is most definitely a lesson that is learned better late than never. Going forward now I have three main focuses for when I enter college, the first is undoubtedly God and my spiritual life, which forced me to have this revelation. The second focus has to be my family, which I appreciate and value more than ever now. The final focus I have, but certainly not the least, is to be successful in my endeavors throughout college. Seeing how much my parents cared for me by seeing them work as hard as they could just so my siblings and I could live a better life gives me all the motivation in the world to work as hard as I can to not only give back to them, but for my future children to live an even better life than I
There are many things that can cause a significant change in someone’s life. Things can change someone’s life in an instant, while some will slowly change someone’s life over time. Some changes are for the better, and some can be for the worse. In stories like the Outsiders and A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley, we had seen the characters’ lives change throughout the story. Some of the main things that can change someone’s life are moving, a close person to you dying, the people around you, and the events that happen.
I have loved puzzles for as long as I can remember. There have been many spring breaks at my grandparents figuring out how every pile fits together, first by separating pieces into piles, such as distinguishing the sky from the ground. There is something fascinating about how all the little pieces end up creating a greater picture. This is relatable to my worldview. By separating views into different pieces of my puzzle, the end results in a large picture of how I want to go through life. The pieces of my worldview sometimes overlap, similar to an ocean and the horizon meet, where it can be hard to distinguish one without the other. Even if the pieces don’t always connect, like the sun and a pink beach bucket, the larger idea is how they are incorporated to make the one final picture. The piles that I separate my life view into are how I want to live, how big my world is, and how can I serve others. Also, how faith fits into my puzzle as well as science, and finally why it is worth making my life puzzle.
This weekend was a rather special one, one that would change my understanding of heights forever. My 9 year old self bounded into the room bursting with excitement. I had been intently looking forward to this weekend for the past couple days now. My mom had given into the constant begging from me, to go to my friend Wyatt’s house. I ran into my car, barely containing my excitement.
