This model was put in place to avoid health problems. Some people are more likely to take action towards their health if they feel threatened. An example can be an obese lady who might be at risk of suffering from a heart attack, she is likely to go to her GP and seek for help as having a heart attack can lead to death, and if she gets help, and her health will be less damaged. In order to help her the GP would refer her to a nutritionist which will help her maintain a healthier diet, even more the professionals from the GP would explain the side effects of what can happen if she doesn’t get healthier. The health care professional will also encourage the lady to start doing physical activities to avoid other diseases such as heart diseases or if she has a heart disease, it helps her avoid having a heart attack.
Even more the health belief model links to the Change4Life campaign , as it helps and demonstrates individuals the benefits of their health and the positive outcomes of being active and eating healthy. This lifestyle also taught me to eat healthy and clean food. It motivated me to work out consistently. It influenced me to be consistent. As a result, I can sense that I am becoming healthier and healthier day by day.
It is apparent that living an unhealthy lifestyle, as well as eating poorly, negatively affects one’s health. From a young age it is quickly learned which foods are considered healthful as opposed to junk food. It is a parents responsibility to supervise the intake of their child's food, however there is a higher risk than ever before of childhood obesity.
The Health Belief Model (HBM) comes from the psychological and behavioral theorists. The premise is that there are two parts involved in health related behavior. “People are more inclined to engage in a health behavior when they think doing so can reduce a threat that is likely and would have severe consequences if it occurred.” (Brewer & Rimer, 2008, p. 152). The patient believes that a specific health action will prevent or cure the illness. How the individual responds depends on the perceived benefits and barriers of that health behavior.
A national epidemic is occurring, the war between food and people. In the United States, about “32% of children (from 2 to 19 years old) are obese” (Bernadac 1). As the years continue to go on the rate of obese children are increasing as well. In the past the problem did not have much consideration due to a low rate of affected children. Now families are suffering the long-term consequences of having an obese child. Some of those health effects are “Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer and osteoarthritis” (CDC 1). A problem with this type of drastic effects may have a solution; method prevention for the future generations and correct treatment for those who are already obese can lower the rate.
In the 21st century childhood obesity is regarded as one of the most serious public health challenges faced by the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2013). Figures recorded by the National Child Measurement programme for the 2011/12 period showed children aged 10-11, of which 14.7% were overweight and a further 19.2% figure were classed as obese. Statistics from the same report also indicate boys in the same age group are more likely to be obese with a figure of 20.7% compared to a 17.7% figure for girls. These figures are a large cause for concern for both these children and on a wider scale, society. Obesity is caused by a number of factors that can range from the not so obvious of social class, to the clear lack of exercise and poor diet. Obese or overweight children are more likely to carry this status into adulthood and put themselves at an increased risk of developing associated health problems such as raised cholesterol, high blood pressure and even premature mortality (Public Health England, 2013). Obesity is defined as the over consumption of calories in relation to little physical activity, this means calories consumed are not being burnt but turned into fat cells (NHS, 2012).

It is common that throughout the course of our existence the very ideas and beliefs that make up our daily activities change. These changes occur in large part due to our experiences in everyday life, primarily those experiences involving interactions with other individuals and our increased knowledge through study. As events and daily interactions begin to challenge our preconceived notions, we begin to shift our way of thinking, thus altering our mission and philosophical outlook on life. Throughout these experiences, however, we mature and begin to realize the importance of adopting health behaviors which correspond with research-based factual evidence, as well as policies and laws. For this reason, I firmly believe the social change philosophy informs my way of thinking.
In conclusion, this essay has identified and discussed two approaches in health promotion. It also applied these approaches to a life style problem analysing the stand the health promoter takes in each approach plus the contribution individuals and communities make with emphasis on how much the strategies adopted addresses inequality. The community approach highlighted the importance of collaboration and participation in building capacity in the community while it discussed the need to conduct evaluation in both approaches. Finally policies which relate to the identified life style issue were discussed.
Childhood obesity is a serious problem among American children. Some doctors are even calling childhood obesity an epidemic because of the large percentage of children being diagnosed each year as either overweight or obese. “According to DASH sixteen to thirty-three percent of American children each year is being told they are obese.” (Childhood Obesity) There is only a small percentage, approximately one percent, of those children who are obese due to physical or health related issues; although, a condition that is this serious, like obesity, could have been prevented. With close monitoring and choosing a healthier lifestyle there would be no reason to have such a high obesity rate in the United States (Caryn). Unfortunately, for these children that are now considered to be obese, they could possibly be facing some serious health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancers. All of these diseases have been linked to obesity through research. These children never asked for this to happen to them; however, it has happened, and now they will either live their entire life being obese, or they will be forced to reverse what has already been done (Childhood Obesity).
I am the kind of person who likes to be in an environment that doesn’t change to often. I’m not a fan of jumping into something new. Adapting to change is one of the hardest things for me and it is the one thing that I need to work on the most. Change happens all around us every day and I need to learn how to deal with it. Change can be good. Change can be bad. It’s just what I’m going to have to work on to become a better leader.
There are many things that can cause a significant change in someone’s life. Things can change someone’s life in an instant, while some will slowly change someone’s life over time. Some changes are for the better, and some can be for the worse. In stories like the Outsiders and A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley, we had seen the characters’ lives change throughout the story. Some of the main things that can change someone’s life are moving, a close person to you dying, the people around you, and the events that happen.
In relation to social transformation I have gathered materials that focusses on programs provided for ‘refugees’ living in New Zealand. The purpose of my findings are based on the societies support for ‘refugees’ in terms of human security and directions of life before settling in their new destination. There are stories about ‘refugees’ that need to be shared and stories that need to be forgotten, because it can produce controversy within the society or the universe. But where can these ‘refugees’ go if the place they call home is unsafe or too risky for the lives of their families and for themselves. It’s hard enough to migrate into a new country, but it is devastating for refugees who have experienced the loss of homes and loved ones.
Any individual that leads a healthy lifestyle will say that healthy living is more than just a fad or goal, it’s a way of life. Changing certain aspects of one’s current lifestyle to become healthier is not the final goal, rather, the objective of setting these short and long term goals is maintenance. Therefore, I choose to change an aspect of my current lifestyle that I felt would facilitate the improvement of my health and would later become a change that I can maintain over the course of my life; I choose to increase the amount of water I drink per day to improve my inner bodily health. I decided on this change because I feel that setting a smaller goal that I could easily monitor and execute will expedite future changes to my lifestyle,
