Collective impact assist with social and educational issues in a community. “Collective impact aims to shift responsibility for improvement in outcomes from individual organizations to entire systems that affect the lives of people in a particular location.” (Karp & Lundy-Wagner, 2015). A backbone organization manages the daily operations in a collective impact. The daily operations include communication with stakeholders and collecting date. Backbone organizations are not tasked with setting the outline for the organizations. Their job is to help enforce it. Backbone organizations don’t make decisions, instead they give advice on options/resolutions to resolve issues. Backbone organizations are not in charge of funding. (Finish here & CITE). Turner, Merchant, Kania, & Martin (2012) list four factors that can affect backbone organization’s performance: (1) Phase of the collective impact-role of backbone organizations when it comes to ideas/proposals. (2) Capacity- what will be the backbone organization’s make up (resources, number of staff) (3) Reach and scope of the collective impact-what neighborhoods/regions will backbone organizations focus on. The six core outcome areas are: (1) Kindergarten readiness-children begin learning the basics: letters, numbers, and social interaction that prepares them for kindergarten. (2) Early grade reading-data shows that children not up to their proper reading level in the 3rd grade, never catch up. (3) Middle grade math-students who complete middle grade math excel in high school math. (4) High school graduation-research shows graduating high school can determine factors like mortality, health and crime. (5) Post-secondary enrollment-students should have access to institutional information needed to make decisions. The information should include two-year colleges and technical schools.
