A role model is a person who inspires and encourages us to strive for greatness, live to our fullest potential and see the best in ourselves. For all athletes, coaches are the most influential element of the competitive experience. According to the Sport in America survey coaches are a leading positive influence on today’s youth. Coaches are the type of people in your life that push you to do the best you can. Without a coach, you wouldn’t have positivity, motivation, or encouragement. Coaches have a physical and emotional impact on athletes. There are two types of coaches in the world, teachers, and sport coaches. An effective coach is someone who provides encouragement to and learning opportunities to his or her athletes. There are several areas in which coaches show great role model strength. Such as, sportsmanship, coaches always needs to be in control and conduct themselves with class and dignity. They teach the essentials of being a good sport, that way they don’t get any technicals. Next, appearance, coaches should always be dressed at their best at a game showing their players how much appearance matters at a game. On the subject of this, coaches are the reason players learn, and get better. They are there to help them push them to be the best they can be no matter what it takes. For example, my track coach Mr. Olson, is one of the best guys I know. Not only is he a role model of mine, but he inspires me to become a better runner everyday. At practice he isn’t super pushy to the point where it can be harmful, he’s caring. Athletics is not the most important part of the educational offerings at a school, it is the most visible aspect. Everything coaches do will be easily observed and under constant scrutiny. This makes a coach one of the most important role model accosicated in a child’s life. Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. However, this is not really a direct correlation to the coach’s effectiveness in a particular sport, being that there are many other factors in coaching a team other than game records. The coach’s job is to enhance the athlete physically, socially, and psychologically, winning is only considered a by-product of that job (Gillham, Burton, & Gillham, 2013). Gillham, Burton, and Gillham (2013) focused on developing a Coaching Success Questionnaire-2 to allow a means of evaluating other aspects of a coach’s interaction with their athletes as both a research and coach development tool. A sample group of athletes at the varsity and club level ranging from ages 18 to 25 was used to develop the questionnaire by asking their perceptions of their coaches.

Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.

In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? My personal philosophy is: I am a coach because of my love for the game and my wanting to teach this passion to others. I believe that playing a sport will not only prepare a child to win, but also for life and the challenges that come with it. I will strive to help every athlete to compete to the best of their ability, while ensuring that are learning skills that will later on better them in their everyday lives.
Becoming a coach has different ways. It can take some college, often teachers must teach in a field that matches their bachelor’s degree. Now there are coaches that teach as well or athletic coordinators. Athletic coordinators are coaches that deal with just sports and do not teach. Those have to go through a different process that regular coaches. For becoming a coach some have to know some health levels. With being a coach , athletes often get hurt and need to know how to properly take care of it. Sometimes when wanting to coach a specific sport you may have to have some background with that sport. A good coach will teach life skills along with developing each player’s athletic talent (Yanity, 2011). With athletic participation at an all-time high, coaches have become an important element in the education of student-athletes (Yanity, 2011). The word coach in a dictionary means a process that enables learning and development to occur and thus performance to improve. This means, being successful requires a knowledge and understanding of the process as well as the variety of styles, skills, and techniques that are appropriate to the context in which the coaching takes place. Next is mentoring, which means off-line help by one person to another in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking. Both are very efficient whenever you’re dealing with student-athletes.
