Good morning everyone and Happy Monday! I hope everyone is so excited to start the clinical part of nursing education. I am very happy to have you in my clinical group. On Wednesday March 1st, 2017, we will meet in the lobby of University of Cincinnati Medical Center. We will spend first few hours talking about the clinicals and what are the expectations. We will also go over the paperwork and how to be successful in completing it. At 1300, we will go the badging office to obtain the badges and your parking passes. The rest of the day we will spend on the unit orientation and I will assign a patient for all of you. I would greatly appreciate if you all go over the interviewing techniques and head to toe assessment in advance, because you
all will interview your patient and assess him/her before we leave the unit on Wednesday. You will have the same patient to take care on Thursday (unless the patient leaves the unit). Please follow University of Cincinnati College of Nursing Student Handbook – Uniform policy (pages 42 and 43). Additionally, no cargo pants; clean shoes – no open toes/heels or high heels (Uniform policy p 42 & 43); no jewelry (except wedding band); short nails (not visible above fingertips, non-polished, non-artificial nails); one pair only of post earrings; no visible tattoos; no visible body piercing including tongue; hair pulled back and off the collar. Students are expected to have their ID badge (which we will obtain on Wednesday), a black pen, stethoscope, a wristwatch with second hand, a penlight, and a small notebook. Please arrive on time. For the first day I am not able to advise you where to park your car, look for the safe and cheap place. For the rest of the clinical, you will be able to park in one of the employees’ parking lots. Do you know what you want to do when you graduate from high school? For me that’s an easy question to answer. I want to go to college to become a Dental Hygienist. By becoming a dental hygienist I will accommodate a good amount of pay to support myself and my future family. Becoming a hygienist is most likely the best choice for me because I have always been interested in teeth and one of my main priorities is my oral hygiene. But also, I have been told that I am really good at making people feel more comfortable and helping them relax. Therefore I have come to the conclusion that dental hygiene is the job for me.

The first week of lecture was a little confusion for me but also exciting because it meant I was starting clinical. The drug test was hard for me because I had just gone to the restroom before class but I drank a lot of water during classed was successful my second time at the end of class. I made my self a little sick drinking that much water. Getting my scrubs was extremely exciting and made me feel like a real nurse. I think it would help me a lot if we where able to wear our scrubs to class when we have clinical right after because there is not a lot of time between class and clinical. I find lecture and the foundations book very interesting and useful. I am looking forward to using the ATI book along with this course as well.
What went well during my clinical day was that this was the first time that I was treated very well by the nurse. This nurse was really good about sharing what she was passionate about, so this encouraged me to want to learn more about what she was teaching me. The best part of my day was patient and parent interaction. I went into two patient’s rooms and played games with them or colored with them. It brightened up my day seeing them laugh despite the health issues they had going on.

The hospital that I work at not only teach us to compare the ID band with the name and date of Birth but we should also ask the patients to state their full name and date of birth to make sure the patient has the right ID band. Some patients will get upset with the nurse and explained that they are tired of repeating the same thing all day.
