The recommendations call for children to participate in at least 60 minutes of vigorous to moderate physical activity every day (Hendrick 1). “Only four percent of elementary schools, eight percent of middle schools, and two percent of high schools provide daily physical ...
Parents always want what is best for their children. They strive to provide for them, teach them, and to watch them grow into healthy, loving individuals. Despite this many parents continue to foster a habit that may prevent the goal of good health, unhealthy eating. Americans today consume too much fat, sugar, and food in general and its shows; rates of obesity and weight/diet related diseases such as diabetes are extremely high. In order to slow and eventually put a stop to this trend parents need to not only be aware and informed, but also need to take action and institute healthy eating habits from the very beginning.

Making connections between personal food habits and family heritage helps student’s associate food and culture. Students are exposed to many contrasts and similarities when exploring culture through the use of food (Pazzaga).”
School is the main source of food for children along with education. Nutrition is an important fact to consider among food since it helps body and brain develop into the way they are suppose to. Two of the main meals of the day, breakfast and lunch, are eaten at schools where breakfast provides energy for the start of the day and helps maintain healthy weight, likewise lunch provides children with good metabolism. Most parents don’t show any concern over the food that is being served at schools because they believe children should be given the right to choose what they want to eat or children can digest any type of food so there is no need to worry. Children tend to build their eating habits in young ages, so is it worth allowing them to eat
In addressing childhood obesity in Hawaii, the Action for Healthy Kids Team is “supporting schools with the implementation of local wellness policy; promoting a healthy school environment that provides students with nutritious food options and quality daily physical activity.” Hawaii encourages the community to get involved with the Action for Healthy Kids Team from making donations to becoming a member and attending the local events. Action for Healthy Kids lets you take the first step in helping to create a better environment for the youth by taking the “Every Kid Healthy Pledge” listed on the Action for Healthy Kids page or signing up to attend meetings and webinars.
On that note, the families and communities where the children live significantly influence their learned lifestyles and activities of daily living that include the eating habits and physical activities. There will be a big challenge on how to teach the children to develop healthy and environmentally-friendly lifestyles when the community lacks full support. Programs that will encourage consumption of plant-based diets particularly fresh fruits and vegetables will surely help in minimizing obesity and climate change. However, the presence of fast-food outlets, and the flourishing poor quality foods influencing the unhealthy food choices and eating habits of the children would be a big issue to deal with. The business motivations behind food marketing created food fads and culture that developed fascination on trending unhealthy foods that include fast foods, sugar and fats-loaded foods, canned and processed foods.

Putting children in sports, clubs, involving them in reading, dancing, singing, or even drama, can help keep children from reaching the risk of becoming overweight and obese. Parents are responsible for their child’s health rate, so allowing them to partake in more activities benefits their child. Parents who buy their children video games are pushing their child to stay inside instead of pushing them to go outside and play. Playing outside for just one hour every day will make a difference in a child’s health. Staying inside only collects more calories in the body, rather than being outside and burning calories. I started playing soccer when I was in seventh grade which helped me stay active and healthy. Sports are a good way to keep children on track and physically healthy so that they avoid becoming overweight. Parents should be aimed to help find a hobby or a healthy lifestyle that their child enjoys. Parents who don’t aren’t helping their child participate in life lessons which keeps there child focused on unhealthy actions such a focusing more on T.V shows and video games.
A child’s proper growth depends greatly on their nutrition and health. A healthy diet is essential to the developing child. Food should never be used to reward, punish, or bribe a child. Instead children should have three healthy meals with snacks in between. It is also important for children to have good self care behaviors (including bathing, washing hands, brushing teeth), and adequate sleep.
In our society today one of the most difficult problems we are facing is the large numbers of obesity in our children. One of the major factors in that is this; our children have become less physically active. At an early age children start watching TV, learn how to operate a computer, and play video games. Having technological skills is now a necessity in all of our lives because everything has turned “computerized,” but the fact is that our children are relying on these types of entertainment rather than getting up and physically exercising to entertain them selves. This directly affects the large number of obese children in our country today because of the lack of physical exercise. It is not that we want our kids to look a certain way or to be better at sports than everyone else, but it is that we want our kids to be physically fit and to develop a healthy lifestyle. Physical exercise is not only for adults, it is for children as well, so we must understand the importance of our children exercising and the benefits from it. By doing that it will make an impact on that child for the rest of his/her life.
There is a long held belief that children’s eating habits directly link to their achievements in school as a nutritionally balanced diet makes it easier for school children to concentrate in the classroom. Healthy eating is defined by the information standard as “consuming the right quantities of foods from all food groups in order to lead a healthy life.” There is strong evidence which will be evaluated throughout this paper suggesting that healthy food consumption contains several types of nutrients, which are a requirement for the many vital processes in the body. Healthy eating according to Hasler (2001) is “usually understood to mean any food or food ingredient that may provide a health benefit beyond the traditional nutrients it contains.”
Because of the increase rates of child obesity, being overweight, diabetes, and other health problems related to weight, people have noticed that there needs to be a change. Institutions that are involved in the development and education of children have been the main target for health care promoters. Since that is the only place other than their home that children spend most of the time in, aiming a focus in education children from there, as well as the adults, is the easiest and most effective form of making a change in their lives. While, there have been some speculation that it does not make a difference because children will still develop the same habits as their parents, it is still a good form of combat against childhood obesity. Although their eating patterns might not change at least they are being provided with information on to how to alter poor nutritional conducts or given some physical activity time to at least get their body moving and burning some of the foods that can cause them to become
In the past 30 years, the obesity rate among children in the US has more than doubled (Sealy 2010:1). Since it is parents who are responsible for making food choices for their children from the moment they are born until they become old enough to make their own, if we want to understand this recent phenomenon, it is the parents whose reasons and motivations behind choices of food and preparation methods we need to understand.
I want to investigate how schools and parents can work together to support healthy eating for young children. Many schools already have healthy eating initiatives in place, however, there is still a high percentage of children with obesity. I firmly believe that if schools and parents have a close partnership in promoting healthy eating young children will have consistency both in the school and home environment. Healthy eating is an area that I feel passionate about due to the effects poor nutrition can have on the child both in the short term and in the long term. During my second school placement, I witnessed a healthy eating initiative that was extremely successful both with the staff and the students. This has influenced my enthusiasm to promote healthy eating in the early years by including parents in order to combat the serious issue of childhood
