In my opinion, I think that universities should be able to check on high school student’s social media. These are the main reasons that they should be able to check on students’ social media. This will hopefully encourage you to think the same way as I do.
To start off with, universities should check social media because of any cyber bullies bullying a student will be stopped much more because the university will stop them from hurtful things. A first example, a student at the university will maybe be bullied by a cyberbully and will tell a complaint to an adult on campus to stop the bully. Another example is that the bully may distract or stop the student from doing their work in class. It will lower the student's grades and will make the teachers concerned. A last example for this is maybe the bully will maybe hurt the student physically, but before that, if the university sees this, they can stop that student from being hurt at all.

An example to start with is if the university reviews the bully, they will stop them from coming into the university and will stop them from harming students mentally or physically. A second example is maybe the bully could be really smart, but is rude to students. It could be a cyberbully or a verbal or physical bully that could eventually stop a student from learning and will get them bad grades. This will make the student depressed and will sometimes think of suicidal thoughts. If the university sees this, they will stop the bully and help the student get back their grades up and will stop them from thinking of bad things to do to themselves. A last example is that if the bully is struggling with grades but isn’t acting well, maybe the university can try to have someone help them because maybe it could be from depression they’ve been through. In “Youthful Indiscretions: Should Colleges Protect Social Network Users from Themselves and Others?” Dana Fleming presents an essay concerning the safety of social networking sites and how Universities can deal and prevent problems. This article is targeted towards school administrators, faculty, and a social networking user audience who will either agree or disagree with her statement. I believe Fleming presents an excellent, substantial case for why she reasons the way she does. Fleming gives a sound, logical argument according to Toulmin’s Schema. This essay has an evident enthymeme, which has a claim and reasons why she believes in that way. Toulmin refers to this as “grounds."
Schools should not be able to restrict or regulate what students say online for the following reasons. Students have the right to express themselves because of the freedom of speech stated in the first amendment , restricting what students can say online won't stop bullying, and majority of the students and teachers are not affected by cyberbullying at all.
So many people in society agree that the online issues students face are very serious. This is a life and death issue so the school needs to get involved because they can greatly help by monitoring exactly what social networks students are on. This way less students will feel like they can torment others outside of school and less students will be put down. Laura, a college student states, “I recently found my 13-year old sister’s Tumblr account with the title ‘Depressed but well dressed’, it immediately made me take action, let my parents know and make sure she got the help she needed” (Wallace). If Laura had not found her sister’s social network account, things could have gone very downhill.
Cyber bullying and online crime must be put at a stop. Parents and teachers should play a great role in regulating what their kids are doing on social media. Parents give their children smart phones, tablets, and computers but they fail to convey the proper way of using those tools. They should teach them the rules of being on social media by telling them from right to wrong. Parents don’t give their children a car to use without telling them the proper rules of how to drive the car. If they don’t teach them how to drive the car then that child wouldn’t know what to do about his or her car and may lead to an accident. This is the same way of how parents should also teach their kids of how to regulate on social media. There are many privacy settings on these social network sites which some kids are not aware off or simply do not care about. The bullying and harassment that occurs between these students should not only be up to the parents to deal with, but also up to the school districts. Afterall, parents expect that the students are partially under the school’s protection and responsibility. When the bullying continues outside of school, and personal information is exposed for others to see on social media, it is still up to the district to set the consequences for its students. Because most cases of cyberbullying start at schools, it is nearly impossible for students to avoid the bullies’ torment throughout the day. As for the consequences, a school district’s Code of Conduct must also consider the former record of these bullies and anyone else who is involved. The severity of each student’s punishment shall be partially determined by his or her history of previous misbehavior or faulty actions. In a digital pile on for example, a student may only post a small comment in agreement with a previous post but will still receive the minimal of a written referral and a phone call home, letting the parents know why such measures had to be taken. If the reported bully continues to bother the victim, whether it is in person or through social media services, the consequences will be more harsh for each known violation until expulsion is the only answer. By monitoring where bullying occurs and making sure that they are safe for a student can be extremely helpful. Lawner and Terzian identify that bullying happens where adults aren 't watching and call these places “hotspots”. They say “Research suggests that much bullying behavior occurs in “hotspots”— areas with low levels of adult supervision, such as a playground, bus, or cafeteria.” This only proves that bullying happens everyday usually at the same area, yet no one is there to see or help. Adding supervision by placing adults in areas like this would decrease the issue in that children are being watched causing the victim to feel safe and the bully intimidated. Since bullying is being turned to online, administrators should have the right with permission from the victim to see what the bully is posting on there page. Bullies usually have more than one victim and administrators being able to access the bullies internet pages so that they could identify more easily who they are attacking. Although I stress the importance of supervision, it is important to also make children feel a sense of freedom and by adding too much supervision school can quickly turn into a prison style monitoring
Universities should understand and develop policies about social networking sites before taking any action against students. They should clearly mention what is misconduct in their policies. The students should follow the rules that universities has and they should not post any offensive material about the university on their personal Facebook pages.
Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives whether they recognize them or not.
