As many of you heard back in January 2015, a number of people were attacked by terrorists because of the misunderstanding of freedom of speech. Charlie Hebdo, a satirical cartoon magazine, created a cartoon that offended the Islamic religion. For many decades cartoons just like these, but with different content, were published and no one had a problem with it. The guest on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show, Bill Maher, mentioned being a liberal, and 100% for freedom of speech. Being a liberal means that you are open to new ideas, and changes. Mr. Maher does consider both sides to the Charlie Hebdo attack, however, he stands strong by his belief that it is Muslims who are a threat and cause trouble. Some critics, people that are anti-Hebdo, might say that he went too far, but the reality is - no he did not. He did not sugar coat anything. He stated that Islam in general has been seen as violent, and that Muslims have no true compassion for the world. Islam is not a religion of peace - it destroys world peace. Another concept made by Mr. Maher is that there are no “great religions”, and that Islam is the worst one. Whenever a joke or anything seen as an “insult” to Muslims is made, the whole Muslim population is against that. Many cartoons have been made about Christianity, and we don’t see Christians kill because of it. The point that Bill Maher is trying to get across is that Muslims are the target population seen as a threat in the world, and we must stand up against Muslim countries. Freedom of speech makes it possible for people to express themselves with words. Going back to Muslim countries, it’s clear that they will always stick together in times like these, and it’s crucial to understand that they will attack if anything seems offensive to their prophet Muhammad. No one can make a joke about their religion because they will take some kind of action against it. Some parts of the world don’t allow the freedom of speech.
