Cereal is a great breakfast food that is loved by kids and adults alike. We love the crunchy taste early in the morning in a bowl with milk, while it also doubles as an in-between meal or evening snack. The challenge comes when you need to store the cereal after you have opened it. Cereal tends to become stale quickly. Becoming stale changes the texture of the cereal and makes it less desirable to eat. Limp soggy cereal is a big turnoff as a beginning to the day. What Choices Do I have? There are several types of containers on the market. Depending on what kind of storage and counter space you have in your kitchen should be taken into consideration. Also are kids going to be making their own cereal as well as snacking on it during the day? Cereal storage containers come in glass, metal, ceramic, and plastic. If you choose plastic, to make sure …show more content…
The most important factor is that the container is airtight. Round cereal glass containers might remind you of countertop cookie jars adding a scoop. Glass storage containers can also come in cylinders and uprights with plastic pour top lids. Just make sure to lid opening is large enough for your cereal to pour easily. Ceramic countertop containers can come in a variety of shapes, colors, and designs. They may be too heavy for children to use if they need to be lifted. Any kind of ceramics or pottery is subject to breaking if dropped which could be a hazard. Metal containers are usually aluminum and relatively lightweight. Ceramic and metal are not transparent, so you have to check inside to see if you are getting low on your cereal stash. Plastic seems to be the most popular option when buying cereal containers. They are lightweight, most are transparent, and they come airtight. These plastic type containers come in all shapes and sizes to suit any need you have as well as most being kid

We have to know the methods that the marketers use to attract us, and also the factors that make us very confident when buying a specific food product .The article by kim severson “Be It Ever So Homespun, There’s Nothing Like Spin,” Discusses the food packaging issues which I believe are strong ways in misleading people. At the begging of this article, Severson writes about her experience with food and our confusing attraction to the products by their packaging. The part when Severson writes “Something made me uneasy when I dropped a box of organic koala crisp cereal in my shopping cart.” When we think about it, why was it
Nutri-Grain cereal bars were created by the Kellogg Company and first introduced in the 1970’s Australia. They were later introduced to the United States and other countries. As more women began to work outside the home, the ritual of a family breakfast became obsolete as many individuals turned to quicker solutions for breakfast. The Nutri-Grain bar soon became popular as the on-the-go snack during the 1990’s. The cereal bar also comes in a variety of flavors that kids love, from blueberry to strawberry yogurt and has the texture a soft, homemade cookie. This television commercial centers on the theme of fostering a relationship between today’s kids and nature (see Appendix A). As the youth of today spends more time in the electronic world,
John Harvey Kellogg wanted to cure “Americanitis”, which was the stomachache caused by the typical American breakfast. This breakfast consisted of sausage, fried ham, beefsteak, bacon, with whiskey and salt added on top. He decided to build a tiny health center that helped American improve their heath. In that center, he provided tips for healthy eating, and exercises. He did not allow fats, salt, or sugar in his clinic. In 1894, he took a trip to Denver, where he met an entrepreneur who invented a cereal made of shredded wheat. This inspired Kellogg to take this idea back home, and share with his brother, Will. Kellogg and his brother began to experiment, and created many cereals. They then met C.W. Post, and decided to collaborate and were eventually called themselves The Big Three. They invented 108 different brands of cereals. In the 1940s, they began adding a candy coating to the cereal. The Big Three controlled about 85% of the cereal market. The public’s enthusiasm for cereal grew drastically because women, who had children, had more time in the morning. Although convenience was the key to starting the day, the Big Three could not control the breakfast table without being finessed.
You have the container that protects and houses the product, the outer packaging and the shipping container, also known as the master carton. Your product packaging should consist of:
Cheerios are a breakfast cereal eaten by millions of Americans everyday. General Mills shares to the public through their ads that Cheerios are a healthy breakfast and snack that brings the benefits of oats, low sugar, and vitamins and minerals into our diet. Honey Nut Cheerios is one of the many cereals that General Mills have in which they claimed is good for our health because of the ingredients they use. Some of the ingredients that are in the cereal have raised red flags to consumers like the sugar content that is much higher than other cereals and the GMO’s that are in it. Since these information is not widely publicized, consumers who are unaware of the different serving sizes and ingredients will consume a higher amount of unwanted
Post Cereals was the first company to come up with the idea for a pastry that would later inspire Kellogg's Pop-Tarts. In the early part of the 1960s, Post began developing a method of packaging dog food in foil in order to keep it fresh and avoid refrigeration. They began applying this method to food for human consumption and created a new breakfast pastry that could be prepared in a toaster and would complement their already popular cold cereals. The announcement of this new breakfast pastry, which Post had decided to call “Country Squares,” came in 1963. Because the product was released so hastily, however, one of Post's biggest competitors, Kellogg, was able to come up with their own version and release it six months later. Even though Post had released their Country Squares prior to Kellogg's version, their sales were lackluster. Many believed that this was due in part to their name. In a time of progressive pop culture, the name Country Squares could be seen as a backward way of thinking. The developers working on the proje...

Arnas page 139).” Children are like sponges…they soak in information from the stimuli surrounding them. Between birth and 3 years of age, the human brain increases to 80% of its adult size. This is such a crucial point in development for children and therefore, it’s so important to foster their learning in this age period.” (Pollini, A.) Children are such an easy audience to target because they retain so much and want everything. Taken from the nutrition facts on the box, just one cup of Trix cereal contains 13 grams of sugar and most children consume more than one cup of cereal per serving. Statistics show that children eat cereal 3.67 times a week and all of the sugar adds up! Obesity is such a huge problem in the United States in this day and age. Children need to start eating healthier, and that starts with their first meal of the day, breakfast. If all of these sugary cereals didn’t have commercials that targeted children then they would eat
Although United Cereal’s products are diversified into many different types of foods and beverages, its main source of revenue remains the breakfast cereals market. The real challenge of this market is clearly seen in the European market, where the national tastes and breakfast traditions vary between countries. As a result, its approach in Europe is more complex than in the United States, which causes higher costs and slower processes.
When I think about Kellogg’s target market for their classic corn flakes to me the marketing is simple. A wholesome product for your family, a breakfast staple for many homes for many years. In recent years Kellogg has marketed corn flakes to the average American family of 4 or more with middle and upper middle class income, and a busy lifestyle. A big opportunity for them has been the fact that this generation of US consumers are concerned more than ever about healthy food, we also have very hectic lives. So touting corn flakes as a healthy breakfast that is quick is a perfect way to appeal to a variety of families. In 2012 they launched a campaign geared towards reminding consumers about the simplicity of the ingredients in their oldest brands, one of them corn flakes with only 4 ingredients. Jogging the memories of consumers that they have always been a healthy, easy delicious choice for breakfast. Reiterating that this is not a new concept for Kellogg’s, but one they have been valuing for 100 years. Communicating to families that they know the modern family has a busy life and not much time for a healthy breakfast, corn flakes satisfies that need. The colors they use on their corn flakes box even accentuate this idea. The three colors green, red and yellow all represent different things to consumers. Green represents the environment, nature and organics. Red indicates energy, and a sense of urgency. Lastly, yellow signifies sunshine energy and happiness (Coffin, 2011). They also subtly target children with these three bright colors in a simple almos...
When Europeans began settling in Canada, they felt that the European way of life was the height of human achievement. Assumptions were made about the aboriginals; they were characterized as ignorant, savage, uncivilized and primitive. The Euro-Canadi- ans realized that the native cultures were drastically different from European culture. They thought the native cultures would not be able to adapt to modern society. The issue was how to assimilate the aboriginals into the mainstream way of life.
The benefits of good nutrition are important for everyone at home and at work. Good health begins with a good breakfast. People who have a morning meal are more likely to take in more vitamins and minerals, and much less fat and cholesterol. (WebMD, 2008) The effect is often a leaner body and less chance of overeating and going to the vending machine during work hours. Researchers at the 2003 American Heart Association conference reported that breakfast eaters have a lower chance of being obese and getting diabetes. Another study in the International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition concluded that people that eat breakfast cereal daily feel better both physically and mentally compared to the people who almost never ate cereal for breakfast. A Web MD article explains “To get the full benefits of breakfast, the Mayo Clinic recommends a meal with carbohydrates, protein, and a small amount of fat. They say that because no single food gives you all of the nutrients you need, eating a variety of foods is essential to good health.” Even if an employee does not have time to eat before work, because they are rushing to be on time or their morning consists of dealing with children, bringing a breakfast that they can eat as soon as they get to work would be a healthy habit to get into. Multi- tasking is possible when eating cereal, fruit and nuts at the same time as checking voicemail or emails. Good nutrition needs to continue throughout the day. Fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks, drinking water or tea to stay hydrated, and eating dairy products all add to well-balanced meals. For example, eating healthy dinners with fish two times a week can vastly improve a person’s well-being because fish has omega 3 fatty acids.
Breakfast is the first meal of the day and has always been said to be the most important. This meal is proven to promote better attitudes towards the day and gives people more energy for the day. Eating breakfast is supposed to prepare you for the day and promote better choices when it comes to choosing what to eat for the rest of the day. For some people eating breakfast isn’t a choice when it comes to weak stomachs not being able to handle the earliness of the meal, but what are the true benefits of eating breakfast? Studies show that breakfast is healthy for you, but making the healthy choices that make breakfast is what really proves its importance.
Market opportunities for breakfast cereals is vast, some segments of the market have been neglected, most notably that of the over-50’s. Insightful presentations were given at the “Older, Richer, Wiser” Conference that would suggest the over 50’s market segment is targetable.
