In today's modern world technology is taking over, more specifically cellphones. What use to be a luxury is now a necessity. Cellphone usage has taken over in many aspects of people's lives especially in teenagers, but can it really be that bad? Everyone should keep up to date, but there should be a balance. Teenagers have the highest usage of cellphone services. Teenagers are no longer communicating verbally with each other but rather, texting, tweeting, Instagram posting, updating profiles. How are cellular phones affecting teenagers literacy in New York City for the past year?
Cell phones play an integral role in our lives, and we conduct many useful functions through them daily. If a mother wants to inform her kids that she would be late to pick them up from their school, the cell phone would provide a good medium to communicate that message. The cutting-edge technology of cell phones at your fingertips is a very powerful device that can be used to connect with people from all around the world, and it can also save lives as well in emergency situations. However, public institutions such as schools and libraries have gotten to the point where cell phones have become a major controversial issue. Improper cellular usage by the youth mainly caused this. Not just the youth, but adults too are unknown of the potential the cell phone has in terms of accessing information quickly and efficiently. Misuse of the revolutionary aspects of cell-phone technology among the youth and adults alike needs to be recognized in order for cell-phone technology to truly be beneficial to our society in public institutions.
It starts in grade school now, “Why can’t I have a cell phone; everybody else does?” From the perspective of a Generation Y or the Millennials, a person born between 1984- 2002, owning a cell phone did not take place until after high school. This makes it hard to imagine an eight year old toting around a cell phone. Parents have to make a decision based on a child’s maturity level as well as asking the big question: Will ownership of a cell phone help or hinder the child? While cell phones can be a security measure for children, when a child is given a cell phone at an early age, the doorway to possible problems is opened.
We as humans have always needed the ability to communicate with each other; this is how we express our emotions, feelings, concerns and also how we pass down our knowledge from one another. Communication has been the key to hour species survival; this is how we let each other know the latest information that relates to our lives. However, getting the information from one place to another especially across countries or even continents has always been a difficult task, many times the information got lost or it just never reaches its destination. Human kind has always tried to make it easier to communicate with one another. Sometimes it’s for financial purposes and others for necessity. Most if not all of the information in the past was carried on paper, paper has been one of our most important means of communication for the last couple millennium. We have used paper to write letter to our loved ones who are far away, to relay information during the war, or simply to write a poem. However, due to the lack of a better delivery system the delivery or paper mail had always been a slow method of delivery.
The cell phone is a great thing. Did you know that about 90% of the population owns a cell phone(Madrigal, Alexis C)? Our society is affected greatly by the use of cellphones in such ways as; sleep deprivation, communication, and Distraction. There are many things that the cell phone is good for but there are just as many negatives that come from them, if not there are more. The number of people who own cell phones has gone up about 27% since year 2004(Madrigal, Alexis C).
As technology further advances and becomes more evident in today’s society, it creates an overlooked issue with regard to teenager’s use of cell phones. There is no arguing that cell phones can be implemented in a positive manner by making it easier for us to keep in touch with people locally, as well as around the world. However, when not used in moderation cell phones most definitely have a detrimental impact on today’s modern teens. This is not something that has suddenly evolved from nothing, as Albert Einstein predicted, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots” (1). Unfortunately, today is that day, technology, or more specifically cell phones have negatively affected us as humans in aspects such as: social interaction, academic ability, and physical health. This conflict is not something that should be glanced over with little thought or concern, but something that people should take into consideration because it is important that we realize that cell phones have negatively effected the way we humans think, act, and interact with each other.
Post inception of the cell phone has fueled a shift in the civility of adolescent social interaction. Gone are the days of seeing teenagers imaginatively playing alongside each other with the only restriction being his or her ability to effectively communicate. Virtual conversations, text messages and online social networks have replaced development of social skills through personal interactions. Some educators insist that cell phones provide a unique opportunity to capitalize on the learning experience in the modern classroom. Unfortunately, cell phones also provide an opportunity for adolescents to compromise their ethical values and moral standards. Adolescents are known to be source for cheating on exams, disrupting the classroom, and promoting inappropriate behaviors. Distracting characteristics of cell phone usage have shown a negative effect on the reading/writing ability of the adolescent and their subsequent readiness for higher learning. School administrators are challenged to balance the right of possession of the devices by adolescents and the monitoring /control of the school environment during a crisis. A school administrator named Patrick Gabriel drives a point home when he says “The constant use of cell phones, perhaps symbolic of life made virtual by all technology, seems to compound the problem. It has a powerful pull on so many. From my office window, I see students leaving school early or arriving late texting and calling with practically every step they take. The need to stay connected at every moment trumps all other behavior”(38) . In summary, cell phones have positive and negative effect on our society today and is becoming a part of today’s subculture. They are more easily to use, can help save a life, and can keep in touch with friends, family, coworkers, and other business partners. Then again, they carry germs, has dangerous microwave radiation, can cause neglect in families, and eye strain. They can also have teens engage in unapproved relationships. As Stanley Victor Paskaich says, “as long as you have a Cell Phone you're never alone.”
Technology like the internet and texting are inevitable evolutionary steps that our world has adapted to a great deal. They have the ability to provide positive perks to people, however it is the responsibility of those partaking in the social media and messaging to refrain from overindulging in the cyberworld. Like I stated earlier, cell phone and internet usage are arguably beneficial practices in terms of the convenient communication and unlimited issuance of information said technology provides. Nevertheless, the unrestrained amount of technology that the adolescent youth is exposed to on a regular basis is detrimental and must be contained.
Cell phone usage and bullying has gained much attention in the United States in recent years. I have yet to not see one of my peers walking with their eyes glued to their cell phones. They quickly type the day’s events on a tiny screen that they use almost all day, every day. Teenagers today use texting as a primary source of communication. Although texting is an efficient and quick way of communication, texting is reducing teen literacy due to lack of face to face communication, abbreviated spelling, and meaningless conversation.
