SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital When I think of Cardinal Glennon, I picture the prestigious hospital that it is. From the new and improved technology to the colorful walls of the halls, this hospital has become a number one place for children in need. I see children being accommodated to their medical needs by being pushed around in a wagon that has an IV pole with it. Rooms that come alive with colors and pictures to help ease the anxiety of being in a hospital. And most of all, I see the quality care that keeps these patients going. As Dr. Seuss said, “A person’s a person, no matter how small” (2017). Being hospitalized as a kid is very intimidating. Many times, there are cases where a child’s length of stay becomes prolonged. “It’s important to understand children and teenagers are not the same as adults, which means they have different needs and levels of understanding.” (Geitner, n.d.). Childhood is such a crucial time for growth and development. Therefore, it is important that they do not miss out on important milestones for their age. “Children have different needs at different ages and their emotional development and cognitive abilities evolve with age.” (Geitner, n.d.). Cardinal Glennon supports the development of children through Child Life Services. “The mission of the Child Life department at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital is to advocate for the psychosocial, developmental, emotional and educational needs of all our patients and families.” (“SSM Health”, n.d.). Going through this program, incorporating more developmental resources into the children’s lives is one improvement. Teachers could come in on a regular basis to keep the children up to date on their learning according to their developmental levels. Providing adequate peer time for the kids can encourage them to socialize and express themselves rather than being isolated in a bed for days on end. Having books of different reading levels readily available to children to use at their leisure would help take their mind off of things and decrease anxiety while also practicing their literacy skills.
