The founder of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was once quoted saying “No child should die in the dawn of life” and it has been the mission of St. Jude to make their founder’s dream a reality through a series of charitable donations, advertisements, celebrity endorsements, and campaigns. Named after the Patron Saint of hope and lost causes, St. Jude Children’s Hospital was founded in 1960, in Memphis Tennessee and is now named St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Blackwell). After speaking with Cardinal Samuel Stritch, Danny Thomas, a famous entertainer, planned to build a hospital where children from all over could receive health care at no cost to their families. As an influential professor at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Dr. Lemuel Diggs stepped in to advise Thomas. This advisement would later lead to the foundation being poured for a new research facility for the study and treatment of blood diseases and cancer in children. …show more content…
The facilities doors officially opened in 1962. As time went on St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital continued to grow, costing more and more for day to day operations in the medical sense and otherwise. With an increase in cost, the need for advertising increased as well. The goal of advertising for a hospital/charity like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to attract generous donors. With a daily operating cost of 2.2 million dollars per day, these donors are vital for the survival of the hospital (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital). With an average cost 485,000 dollars for two to three years, treating acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL for short is not cheap. On top of the cost of research and care for patients and their families, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is also legally required to maintain reserve funds to accommodate for a shifting economy (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital). The reserve funds are also to accommodate future patients as well since the reserve can maintain the hospitals operating costs for around 1.5
years. The importance of celebrity endorsement and campaigns are also vital for the hospital to survive. In March of 2015, the 11th annual St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign surpassed 100 million dollars thanks to its donors, partners, and celebrities who include Jennifer Aniston, Sofia Vergara, Keith Urban, and Olivia Holt, to name a few. This was the second year the campaign soared past $100 million (PR Newswire). Another well-known celebrity and daughter of Danny Thomas, Marlo Thomas serves as the National Outreach Director for St. Jude. In an article written by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and published by PR Newswire as well as St. Jude’s own site, Marlo said in regards to the Thanks and Giving campaign that "The support we receive allows our doctors and scientists to continue our lifesaving work and also allows us to keep my father's founding promise that no family ever pays St. Jude for anything -- not for treatment, travel, housing or food. That's because we believe all a family should worry about is helping their child live. At St. Jude we will never stop searching for the cures that will save the lives of children everywhere." The Thanks and Giving campaign is a program which encourages consumers to raise funds by donating at checkout from participating retailers, some of which include Kmart -which ranked number one in support for the past six years-, Best Buy, and Dominos along with seventy others retailers (PR Newswire). Each retailer does something specific to raise money for St. Jude, such as the Home Shopping Network selling limited edition Care Ornaments, or the Ann Taylor brand selling specifically designed jewelry where fifty percent of the proceeds go to St. Jude. According to ISpot, the internet’s most comprehensive database of nationally airing TV Commercials, in the past thirty days alone St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has aired their sixty-seven national commercials a total of 1,667 times. These commercials would likely have come from the hospitals fundraising arm which employs more than one thousand staff, which rivals the medical staff of one thousand four hundred eighty-three researchers, physicians, and nurses (Advisory). St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s fundraising department emphasizes long-term goals and planning. After thirty years of working for the hospital as one of their top fundraisers Marilyn Elledge spoke to “The Advisory Board Daily Briefing” in an article written in 2012 and titled How St. Jude built a 'fundraising machine'. In the article Elledge stated that "If we had just been thinking one year at a time, we never would have achieved what we did." What they did was increase fundraising by three hundred fifty percent in twenty years, and in 2011 St. Jude raised close to 700 million dollars. The company achieved their significant jump in fundraising by appealing to people of every socioeconomic level. For children they put on tricycle races, they put on golf tournaments and all-night dance parties for adults while throwing Greek events on campus for college students.
During the 1960’s, America’s solution to the growing population of mentally ill citizens was to relocate these individuals into mental state institutions. While the thought of isolating mentally ill patients from the rest of society in order to focus on their treatment and rehabilitation sounded like a smart idea, the outcome only left patients more traumatized. These mental hospitals and state institutions were largely filled with corrupt, unknowledgeable, and abusive staff members in an unregulated environment. The story of Lucy Winer, a woman who personally endured these horrors during her time at Long Island’s Kings Park State Hospital, explores the terrific legacy of the mental state hospital system. Ultimately, Lucy’s documentary, Kings

Launched in 1987 the New York Children’s Health Project or NYCHP was a vision project that Dr. Irwin Redlener brought to life and wanted it to cater to those children who were needy of healthcare services. While the Doctor was working in pediatrics in Denver Children’s Hospital, he there decided to take some initiative when he came to learn about VISTA or Volunteers in Services to America. From that point, Dr. Redlener began devoting his services to different locations. He then started his initiative of CHF (Children’s Health Fund) which focused on pediatric care for Children’s Health.

Having a wish fulfilled is a desire everyone keeps, but granting one is a special characteristic of a chosen few. Such is the ideology of the Make a wish foundation. This simple, but powerful belief is what drives the Make-A-Wish foundation. For children who must face the uncertainty of a tomorrow, due to their rapidly deteriorating health, a wish is more than just a desire. It’s a hope. Hope is what carries us out of the darkest of slums, to keep going. To face a tomorrow. Make-A-Wish is committed to granting the wish of every eligible child. They do this believing that wishes can make sick children feel better, and sometimes, when they feel better, they get better. Since the spring of 1980, they have been granting the wishes of children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical conditions. The make a wish foundation has the ability to not only unite a society as whole and further the awareness of life threatening illnesses, but also gives hope to individuals and a community as a whole.

These people are very selfless as well; their passing would allow these hospital beds to become available for patients who have a chance of recovering and living a normal life.
In today’s society heath care will forever and always be a necessity and priority. In the United States alone there are several healthcare facilities nationwide that exemplify exceptional healthcare providers. One facility that I ran across doing research is Johns Hopkins Hospital. It is one of the most prestigious and prominent hospitals in America. Johns Hopkins is ranked in the top 10 hospitals for over twenty years and doesn’t show any signs of plummeting lower.
