Bullying has become a very relevant problem within the workplace. Bullying is defined as instances where an employee is repeatedly exposed to negative acts from coworkers, supervisors and/or subordinates over a period of time (Incivility, social undermining, bullying, 2010). A few examples of negative acts related to bulling are constant abuse, ridicule, social exclusion, and stating offensive remarks/teasing. Bullying within the workplace may be portrayed in many different ways, for instance, it can be a manager being the perpetrator or another coworker. In fact, according to the 2017 WBI U.S Workplace Bullying Survey nineteen percent of working individuals are bullied with in their place of work. The study also concluded that sixty one percent of Americans are aware of this abusive conduct in the workplace yet do not say anything to the perpetrator. Bystanders often do not step up and confront the bully for various reasons. A bystander may not step up when witnessing bullying because they may be afraid that if they stand up to the perpetrator, then they too may become a victim. They see it as unprofessional behavior to cause drama within the workplace, or they tell themselves that stepping up will not make a difference given they are not in a position of power in the company. However, there are always solutions to ending workplace bullying on your own if you are a victim such as a three-step process developed by the Workplace Bullying Institute. The three-step process includes: step 1) name it and legitimize it, step 2) take time off to heal and plan a counter attack and step 3) Expose the Bully. Step one, name it and legitimize it means that the individual must name the actions being made as bullying and recognize that the source of the problem is external, not in any way the individuals

Workplace bullying is a pattern of behaviour intended to intimidate, offend, degrade or humiliate a particular person. It can include physical abuse or the threat of abuse, bullying usually causes psychological rather than physical harm. The respondents are being bullied by their employers but these helped them to strive harder to achieve their goals. Although job challenges can be hard to deal with, overcoming those issues can help an employee become stronger and more confident.
Personally I don’t think there is room for bullies in the workplace. Everyone comes to work for the same reasons and that is to make a living. We go to work to support our loved ones and ourselves. No one should have to go into work and deal with a bully.

Downplaying bullying, saying things like “He was just joking around”, and “Don’t take things so seriously” can have serious repercussions. Some people are more fragile than others and react to this type of treatment with anger or violence. On the other hand, there are managers who rule with an iron hand and sometimes this pressure can cause an employee to crack.
Worth & Squelch (2015) define workplace bullying as, “the situation in which a person persistently is on the receiving end of negative actions from one or several others in a situation where the person exposed to the negative treatment has difficulties defending himself or herself against these actions” (p. 1017). Although we all may face many challenges in our lives every day; no one should ever have to experience this type of behavior from another employee. Workplace bullying is a very serious matter and should not be taken lightly, so organizations need to be able to recognize all forms of bullying, train employees on the consequences against workplace bullying, and have effective policies in place that will help prevent this type of behavior.
