Egypt and Mesopotamia: The Ancient Civilizational Powerhouses

There will always be words of great ancient civilization passed by mouth and text, and many are known by most people. Those not educated on the matter might answer Rome or Greece as the top two ancient civilizations. The truth behind it is, historians have been gathering information for years and have narrowed it down to two choices: Egypt and Mesopotamia, and I’m here to backup the reason for their strengths. The ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia greatly influenced the makeup of later empires through their forward thinking through universal language throughout the empire, strategic building (around waterways like rivers and lakes), and advances in educational matters (sciences, maths, etc.).

The Egyptian government had their own take on theocratic government format. The Egyptians were ruled by Pharoahs. According to HistoryWorld.org, “The Pharaoh was held to be descended from god, with the power to assure prosperity and control rituals that assured the flow of the Nile and the fertility derived from irrigation.” Thus, the Pharaoh was believed to have the blood of god, in turn assured his power over the kingdom until he died in which his oldest male offspring would take …show more content…

It was formed nearby large bodies of water that provided fertile land, transport, and drinkable water for the inhabitants of the civilization. “Mesopotamia literally means ‘between two rivers’,” (History-World 65) which refers to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in which Mesopotamia was made in between. They were extremely advanced in innovating technologies such as the wheel, whose invention was credited toward them. They took to discovering “methods of domestication of animals, agriculture, common tools, sophisticated weaponry and warfare, the chariot, wine, beer, demarcation of time into hours, minutes, and seconds, religious rites, the sail (sailboats), and irrigation.” (Samuel
