Children can be very wary when it comes to meeting new people, which is why it is even more important to be able to know how to properly build and maintain a relationship with them, a relationship in which they will be comfortable in. The most important factor in building a relationship with anyone - not just children, is trust. Children need to be able to have that trust in you which will allow them to be open with you and allow you into their lives without being cautious. In order for adults to build meaningful relationships with children, children need to make sure that they always feel welcome and safe around you. Furthermore, it is even more important to be able to mantain that relationship you built with the children. One factor in maintaining a relationship with a child is to create a sense of belonging, making sure the child is never feeling 'left out' or discriminated against. All children should be treated equally, and should all be included in everyday tasks. When a child is ever feeling like they are not getting the same treatment as the others, they will immediately start to feel uncomfortable around you and that 'trust' and 'warm welcome' from your side will dissapear. Moreover, being approachable at all times is very important. If you are not approachable, it will be difficult for children to come to you and express their feelings and will go into a shell. Therefore, as an adult, you should be able to make sure that you build a secure relationship with young people in order to know what they are feeling. Giving encouragment especially to young people can be quite significant in building and maintaining relationships with them. Encouraging them on what they do well rather than put them down on when they do something wrong, will allow them to be more open with you and build a stronger foundation of trust between both parties. Communication skills are also key when it comes to young people. Being able to communicate with them properly and more importanly listen to them and give them time to speak allows them to not only gain a better understanding of you, but also builds more trust between yourself and the young person.
In order to build and maintain relationships with adults it is important to show simple respect and courtesy, for example, simply just saying 'thank you' to being able to listen to others, and communicating well with them. There are many ways which help build rapport with children and young people. One of them is to ensure to actively listen to what they are saying. There may be times were you unintentionally brush aside what a child is saying perhaps it is because you are preoccupied or tired, however, even this can be enough to make a child feel unvalued. Being responded to appropriately reinforces a child's self-esteem. This will in turn help build a trusting relationship. Talking with children, asking and answering questions also helps build their language skills. If pupils are distressed and need to talk about it, they will more likely open up to the person who has made them feel that they have a voice. This is why it is very important to build a respectful and trusting relationship with students, as it can have an impact on most areas of development.

Explaining to a child or young person that if they do not get along with someone then they do not have to play with them or be near them gives them an idea about how to deal with situations that they do not feel comfortable in. Having books about stranger danger or about how their bodies are their own and not for other people to see gives children and young people the basis to understanding what is right and wrong for other people to be doing around them or to them. We could show short videos to the children with parents consent that explain the dangers of letting people touch you in appropriately or not to talk to people on social media as there are lots of resources for different age groups that I have seen recently on a SLP course.
All physical contact with the children should ideally be avoided but in some situations this is not avoidable. E.g young children sometimes need a hug if they have hurt themselves, and at times the children will make physical contact an adult without warning. In these situations the adult should be aware of where they are and who is nearby. The adult should aim to never be left alone with a child (although in some situations this may be unavoidable such as personal care) and if they are the adult must go to lengths to protect themselves, such as leaving the doors open, telling other member of staff where and why they are going to be alone with a child. Ensuring they are observed from another adult if possible, even if at a distance. Any physical contact with a child should always be as a response to the child initiating it.
There are many barriers that could affect the building of relationships with children, young people and adults. One of the barriers could be because of a person’s economic situation. Children living in deprived areas could find socialising very difficult as many communities living in poorer areas having limited access to areas that promote socialising and character building. Another reason could be that parents/carers of deprived areas lack the money needed to include their children in extra-curricular activities which would help maintain a healthy, social life.
Some adults have communication difficulties and adaptations are necessary. It’s import to be sensitive with adults that have communication difficulties.
Interactions with children is very important in a program, so you can build that connection between the child and the staff. Having the ages separated can really help the program. This can also help the staff plan activities for the program.
For example when working with nursery/reception aged children it is important to speak slowly and clearly so that the children can understand. Children that have also just started school for first time, will need time to settle in and may be shy at the beginning but give them time to build up their confidence and communication skills. When communicating with children adults should also adapt their vocabulary depending on their age and abilities. E.g. using simple words and sentences for the younger children. When working with children, they may need more to time to respond when communicating so things may need to be repeated several times in order for them to understand fully. For example in my setting we use visual schedules so that the children know what’s happening throughout the day. When working with older children adults can use more complex words and long sentences.
Active listening, this is not just listening with your ears. You need to show appropriate feedback repeating some of what has been said, maybe in the form of a question. Engage with the child you are talking to and answer/respond when required. Children copy behaviour of others so you need to be the best role model you possibly can be. Children need clear boundaries and limits within the school. They need to know that certain behaviour/actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. These boundaries are often outlined in a Home-School agreement that sets out what the school will accept/do. What the parents/careers are expected to follow and also how the child is expected to
Always need time to communicate with the parents either formal or informal so we can build trust and be cultural sensitive. We can also provide parents with support and education with whatever the child’s needs might be. For the children we help them understand the language and reasoning skills. I think that one of the greatest things that I can do for my kids is to take them seriously and listen to them. My five year old is constantly showing me everything that he learns and it’s very easy to tune him out sometimes, but I think its very important not to. It is important to listen because if you don’t give your kids enough attention they might try and seek it in a negative way. It is important to listen to your children when they have learned something new or want to tell you something that they are proud of. Children seek your approval, and that gives them confidence.

Parenting requires a great deal of adaptation. The parents want to develop a strong bond with their child but they also want to maintain a healthy marital relationship and adult friendships.
