Brianna Shular has been a student at Pelham Academy since 11/28/2016. Prior to her arrival, Brianna struggled with appropriate interactions with peers, emotional dysregulation and frequently AWOLing from home and programs. She demonstrated poor impulse control, verbal expression, problem solving and planning skills. Brianna’s current goals is to learn how strategies for navigating social interactions, improve her interpersonal skills, identify and practice effective coping skills, and work on developing a healthy and positive identity. At the beginning of her treatment, Brianna express discontent with her transition to Pelham Academy, engaging in maladaptive behaviors to seek attention of peers and staff. In addition, she had limited self
awareness of her warning sings, limited emotional vocabulary and coping strategies Thus, leading to frequent dysregulation and AWOL attempts. Over the course of her treatment, Brianna made some improvements across all settings and reports she wants to face new experiences and improve her awareness around her impulsivity and social skills. She attends individual sessions weekly and engages in therapeutic activities that focus on social skills, challenging misperception of social encounter, increasing her level of awareness of her emotional and physical state and exploring activities that will improve her positive identity. Brianna demonstrates poor memory, planning and problem solving across all domains of functioning. In sessions we have utilized expressive therapy modalities and the SMART model to expand of her sensory skills to improve her cause and effect thinking skills, increase body awareness and tolerate new stimulation. In just, it improves her ability to recognize the changing emotional states in her body and increase her ability to express it in sessions through the use of these modalities. Overall, Brianna has made some improvements with her ability to ask for staff support when frustrated, identify strong emotions using her tolerance scale and access coping strategies when she experiences shift in her mood.

The day she turned seventeen she moved out because she wanted more independence and wanted to be closer to her friends, contrary to her parents wishes, she moved 15 miles away from home. Brianna moving out was bound to happen, she just decided to sooner than other people. Quickly after she moved out Brianna realized that going to a regular high school was tougher than she had imagined and she ended up dropping out. Brianna also realized that finding a place to call home was also difficult, she was moving from place to place. Wanting to push forward Brianna joined an opportunity high school, which is equivalent to online schooling and eventually graduated. Not only that, Brianna eventually found a steady place and was living there comfortably. Everything seemed to be going uphill for Brianna or at least that is what her friends and family had the impression of.
Allison obviously lacked the respect of others, for she had no friends whatsoever prior to her time spent in this detention. She also has nervous ticks, such chewing her nails, and played with her hair. Brian was another case of insecurity. The influence of self-concept was strong with Brian Johnson for he had no sense of self. He could not meet the standards of his desired self and was therefore unhappy with himself as a person.
Daisy lacks self confidence which made it harder to raise her fifteen year-old son Donny. There were many instances where Daisy pondered on what she can do better to help Donny in school, but as she put forth an effort, she always resisted. “She remembered when Amanda was born. Donny had acted lost and bewildered. Daisy had been alert to that of course, but still, a new baby keeps you busy of course….”(570) When Daisy saw this happening, she never stopped to reassure Donny that even though he had a sister, it was not going to change their relationship. Daisy should have reassured her son by correcting the problem as soon as it surfaced, then Donny should have understood. When Donny started to have problems in school, Daisy gave up without trying, and let a tutor dictate her son’s activities especially when the teacher questions Daisy about Donny’s actions, Daisy replied, “Oh I’m sorry, Miss Evans, but Donny’s tutor handles these things now…” (572) In school Donny’s behavior changed soo drastically that he started to stay out late and Daisy just sat back and let this happen. “The tutor had sat down so many rules![She] were not allowed any questions at all about school, nor were to speak with his teachers…,Only one teacher disobeyed…”(572) Because Daisy didn’t believe in herself or her word, she let others control and therefore his behavior worsened.
Using Allison’s strengths and interests is important to helping her become a successful student. This is the method of helping Bender, Brian and any other student become successful in school. Building on the student strengths, while allowing them to work on their weaknesses is important for all students and especially for twice-exceptional students in the classroom. When looking at the student’s weakness it is important to understand that their behavior is not a weakness, but a result of an underlying cause. Examining the cause of the behavior will help recognize the challenge areas for improvement by understanding the underlying cause for the behavior. After understanding the student’s strengths and challenges, the teachers can then fully help the student learn to the best of their abilities.

The label “at risk” is very ambiguous and may mean different things for different people. The at risk concept lies on a continuum from low to high and involves many interacting dimensions which ultimately increase one’s probability of having problems in school. In this way being at risk looks different for different people and while some may seemingly be okay, others may clearly be struggling or display subtle signs that something is indeed wrong. Being at risk suggests that there are individual factors, environmental factors, or a combination of both, imparting difficulty on one’s ability to cope with life. It is important to note that being at risk is not a permanent label because environmental factors may not be constant, and so neither will its impact on an individual. In addition to this, intervention may help individuals like Owen embody some resiliency.

It is important to present yourself as a strong confident communicator. If you do not take yourself seriously what makes you think other people will. In my life, I have found that I am a confident communicator most of the time. However, sometimes I doubt myself and jumble my words to create an unclear message.

From the hand gestures that we make when talking to others, or even the way that we walk. We show different types of body language based off the environment that we put ourselves into. We can show completely different non-verbal communications in the way that we greet someone that we know, or with someone that we have never met before. This is like wise with the way that we say goodbye to that person. A good example of this would be the lobby of a hockey rink on a busy Monday night. It’s a good location for observing human interactions with greetings and goodbyes, because it’s the place where everyone must walk through to get to the ice arena. It’s also where parents like to wait for the children to get dressed in the locker rooms. The purpose of this paper is not to teach you, or to show you how interpersonal communication is essential to everyday life at home or work. But, I am going to do my best to at least show you how essential communication skills are in all areas of life by using me as the example. My plan is to focus on some of the elements of interpersonal communication that we have been touching on this semester. While reading our Interpersonal Communications Book, three goals kept being highlighted that I personally wanted to accomplish by the end of course. I’m sure that by now have noticed that I keep referring to my topics as goals. The reason why I’m doing so is because I’m still on that learning curve…an ongoing process. If can recall back to all of our assignment in this course they all bring one collective point. That point is that, Interpersonal communication is an essential skill in everything that we do in life.
Although I have only had two brief encounters with my friend from EFR, the insights I have had from reading this book link to my experiences with her because like Nick, she is unique. She may have a disability, but she is still very talented in other ways. Learning things like math may not necessarily come easy to her, but she is very creative and artistic! After reading this novel, I came to realize that everyone is unique, and everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and we as teachers need to be aware of that, and really try to focus on our students’ strengths so we can help build them up to a place where they can feel confident and accepted in the school and community as a whole.
