What is Dean’s List? The Dean’s List is a “category of students in a college or university who achieve high grades during their stay in an academic term or academic year”. Dean’s List is an award to students who get 3.50 or more for current accumulative grade point average (GPA). All students at the university wants to get Dean’s List because there are many benefits, such as easy to get scholarship, award, invitation to special events, a sense of personal achievement and many others. Therefore, to get the benefits, students should try to achieve Dean’s List. Hence, there are three ways to get Dean’s List every semester. Firstly, students must always do revision after a lecturer finish each chapter. Students can improve their knowledge …show more content…
According to Education Corner, study groups provide an excellent means for students to compare class lecture notes. Comparing notes allow students to fill in any information or important concepts that they may have missed during lecture. Therefore, through learning in group, students can exchange notes and ideas about the lesson. Students who exchange notes and ideas can improve their knowledge. For example, students can exchange about their think or way to easy remember a note. In addition, learning in group can easy for students to understand about lecture note and student who not know about subject can ask their group member to teach them. It will help students to improve their knowledge and understanding about learning. Based on Schoenherr (2006), when students work together in collaborative teams in classroom, they learn material better than when they sit alone at their desks. Hence, learning in group can change different idea with member in group its better than study alone. So that, to get Dean’s List every semester, students must study in …show more content…
Carry marks are usually calculated based on assignment, quizzes, attendance, test, presentation and normally carry marks at university are 60% or 60 marks. Therefore, students should take seriously carry this mark because the carry marks will be mixed with the remaining final exam score of 40 marks. Studying hard for only a few hours the night before the test isn’t going to helps ensure perfect score. If student really want to ace those exams, study old and new material every day or at least several times a week. So that, before students sit for the test they need to make a revision every day before the test. This is because, if the students make last minute revision, the possibility of them scoring in the test is high and will affect their carry marks. Students who get low carry marks will feel stressed and they need to learn to be persistent in the future. Hence, students should obtain high carry marks to be eligible for the Dean’s List every
In the article “Making the Grade,” published in Newsweek Magazine, Professor Kurt Wiesenfeld states that students in the modern society believe that they should receive grades based on their desires and potential rather than their academic performance and personal effort. It is arguable that students should be allowed to have some leniency based on the fact that there may be obstacles distracting or refraining them from completing their work. I believe that it is the students responsibility to maintain or improve their grades by implementing hard work, consistency and dedication to their studies.
According to social psychologists a group is composed of more than two individuals who depend and interact with each other in some manner (Lessing). Examples of groups include a class, a football team, a cult etc. Groups normally have various similar features including: norms that determine the right behavior, roles assigned to individuals, which determine what responsibilities and behaviors people should undertake, a communication structure and a power structure, which determines how much influence and authority group members have. For example, a class has norms, like the time people should arrive in class. The role of the professor includes teaching, administering exams and inviting discussions. The ro...
He says, that students learn more because they are supported by their peers, and learning is most effective when it takes place in a supportive environment. Which, is why Harry Wong calls his groups support groups. When your students can work together cooperatively, you have reached the highest form of teaching. However, most teachers keep students in the same support group for way to long! According to Wong, support groups should change with each activity, such as changing who is each support group as well as changing the number of students in each support group with each
In summary, I believe that it is important to fully understand and execute exceptional group skills, because there will be many group projects we must work on together during our time in college. Therefore, we must be able to work with our classmates effectively in order to maintain good grades and acquire the skills we will need in the careers we have chosen. Most businesses are essentially groups of employees that work together to produce the services that their companies provide. Most of us will be required to work closely with co-workers to achieve the goals that our company sets within a certain time frame. Therefore, we must demonstrate superior group and teamwork skills in order to be productive and successful in our fields
I would be a beneficial member to National Honors Society because I have the capabilities to set and exceed expectations not only in academics but as a successful role model and leader in our society. Being apart of such a prestigious organization has been a goal of mine since day one, and would not only be a privilege, but a honor. One must give practical meaning to the Society’s standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character which I believe I have applied to my life to help achieve my future goals.
The faults expressed in the Study Skills inventory results were actually extremely obliging. Some strengths derived from my results were test preparation, concentration and memory skills. Some of the weaknesses that I patently lack are note-taking, textbook and time management adroitness’s.
Classroom management plays an important role in effective teaching by providing a desirable environment which promotes better learning and student growth. The most important effect that classroom management has on student behavior is that it promotes better learning because students can better focus when their environment is free from distraction and conflict. When a teacher provides a well-organized and controlled environment, student’s academics interest and performance increase while behavioral issues decreased (Pope, 2010). One classroom management technique I plan to use in my future classroom setting will include the use of cooperative learning. According to Maher (2010), cooperation learning leads to higher group and individual achievement, higher-quality reasoning strategies, more frequent transfer of these from the group to individual members, greater metacognitive skills, and more new ideas and problem-solving. Students will be assigned heterogeneous groups with a mixture of high achievers with low achievers. Groups will also be created to ensure diversity between gender and ethnicity.
Research conducted by the United States Department of Education (n.d.) shows that when all students are given the opportunity to learn together all students have the ability to form life-long social and cognitive skills that allow them to achieve within the educational
Students are social by nature and given the right instructional strategies and good classroom management teachers can promote a positive learning environment. The use of instructional strategies will be different from class to class due the diversity within the student population. It is important to use strategies that actively engage students and modify them to meet the needs of the students. Social learning or group work can be g...
The application of collaborative learning strategies is a process in which two or more students work together. Collaborative strategies will be used in planning, translating and reviewing the education process to form student learning through group-oriented activities. This source will also be useful in lesson planning to help explain how collaborative learning strategies in the classroom will help students in the learning process improve by interaction; how positive interdependence of collaborative learning leads to common responsibility; how collaborative learning builds students’ self-esteem, and confidence in students. This application recommends that collaborative learning strategies can be implemented with Jig-saw technique as well as in learning technology which can be accessible to all participants working in cooperative groups (Iqbal, Kousar, and Ajmal, 2011).
...at previously, sometimes in the midst of a discussion, people forget that there are two sides of a story and not everyone has to agree to yours. What we learn from our books or our studies is not what is necessarily important. What we learn from our peers and our professors is what’s important. Learning is more than absorbing fact, it is acquiring understanding, and it is being passionate about the material you are given. Each piece that we have read in class, and each comment that we make impacts a person no matter how little it seems. The education systems focuses too much about effective methods of teaching and not enough about effective methods of learning. However, this course felt like we were learning something instead trying to finish the curriculum. As Albert Einstein once said, “education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think”.
Proponents claim that learners’ academic achievement can be significantly improved with the effectiveness of use of collaborative learning. The active exchange of ideas within small groups increases interest among learners and also promotes critical thinking and deeper levels of understanding of concepts (Benware & Deci, 1984). According to Johnson & Johnson (1986), there is convincing evidence that collaborative teams achieve high level of thoughts and retain information longer than learners who work as individuals. The shared learning gives learners an opportunity to engage in discussion, take responsibility for their own learning, and thus become critical thinkers (Totten, Sills, & Russ, 1991).
Research for the cooperative learning structure has demonstrated that it can really enhance a student’s achievement, attitude towards learning, and the atmosphere where learning takes place. According to Akinbobola, “Cooperative learning is a mode of learning in which students work in small groups to achieve a purpose. Here there is an emphasis on the importance of group work, students in a group help each other in learning the content, but achievement is judged individually” (2009, p.2). The cooperative learning structure encourages students to
teacher works with the students who need to be taught using different instructional materials” (Friend). This helps the students who struggle with learning in big groups because they can get more one-on-one instruction.
Assessing student understanding is important but as a teacher you need to provide feedbacks to the students. During my lesson, I allowed the student to ask questions and tried to answer each individual’s answer right away. Since my students are not able to read or write I had to provide feedbacks by verbally.
