His father was a preacher, who also owned owned a grocery store in Cookeville, Tennessee. He was raised by his father to be considerate to customers. The first experience that changed him, he explained, was losing a brother and his mother. In 1983, his mother was sick but at that time on one know what sickness she had. It was later on when the family found out that their mother had developed AIDS. That summer, Peter went to visit their mother and she died soon afterwards. Then, his brother Kyle passed away about a year and a half after his mother got sick. Kyle was a drug user, and stole some alcohol from a store and got drunk, then froze to death in a snowbank. Later, after Peter married and had three sons, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had surgery to remove it. He lost his job shortly after that.
