Becoming A more Effective Student
The United States Department of Education public the data that shows the four-year graduation rate in California State University, Northridge is approximately 14%, the average six-year and eight-year graduation rate is between 44% and 49%, respectively. I can not help but wonder exactly the matter that is holding us back from graduating? How can we face the challenge to learn more and successfully graduate? After my first month of CSUN, I realized that I must sacrifice inclination to be more effective in my academic life, so in order to do this, I have to decide what my priorities are. So how will I become a more effective student and combat the negative factors on becoming successful? The right answer for me is to manage my time, improve my study habits, setting goals or schedule, prioritize and balance our normal life(social, health, entertainment and daily life). I believe that through certainly carry out these things that we would learning in a higher level and getting back on track, thus , hopefully we can graduate in four years.
Before we figure out the solution, we need to find the issue, internal or external factors may cause we failed or stoping us to becoming a effective students. I interviewed 7 senior students at CSUN and mot of them feel that balancing their school life and normal life is one of the most difficult challenge because they lack motivation. But what can we do to fix this problem? First, make sure you are not disturbed when you study. ...To maintain health we must have a good habits, such as eat right and on time, exercise, get enough sleep, keeping mental health. Must checking ourselves every, control our diet, stress and rest time. Once you feel not good in your body you must find the campus medical resources or go to the hospital. As we all know, a good and healthy body can help us to continue or work and give us the passion,energy and positive effect, thus, we can handle the difficulties in our school life. So don’t to belittle that kind of health matter. Having a clear goals, schedule improvement, prioritize,having a good habits of learning and keep healthy, are indispensable part of being a more effective student. Being healthy is one of the most important Be Your Best Self aspects because it encompasses so much of our day-to-day lives. To be described as healthy, I not only have to be physically fit, but also mentally, socially, and financially fit. Being healthy has many benefits. Exercise allows a person to be a happier, calm, energized, and confident individual. The same can be said for exercising the brain, socializing, and keeping finances in order. By being healthy I will feel better every day and find fierce determination and discipline in the process.
You can medically be in the best shape possible, but if you are under a lot of stress, your mental health is compromised, which can lead to isolation from others, and now your social health is being neglected. It’s just one big cycle. Focusing on all components of good health such as eating a balanced diet for your physical, finding stress relievers for your mental and spending time with friends and family for social, is taking positive preventive measures to stay healthy. It is not only our responsibility, but a community effort to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve and maintain overall good health.

A lot of people struggle to incorporate healthy eating and physical activity in their daily routines. People forget that if they take care of themselves, it might help make their day a bit better. Being motivated is an important to being successful in studying. Cottrell (2003) suggests that, you would need to have a high level of motivation to help you stay focused and find ways to help you through any problems that may occur during studying. For instance, I will be using many steps to help me implement this skill into my studies. Sometimes you will just have to use the mind frame of just do it to motivate or you may need to create a strategy to help you. A strategy that I will use to help increase my motivation is by rewarding myself for studying, for example, once I have finished the required goals for my day I can go watch an episode of my favourite show. Another strategy to help me with my studies would be to create a motivational poster. This would be a poster placed in my study area that includes positive words, quotes and pictures that will help motivate me to be successful. Finally, reminding myself of the long term goal and what I want to achieve will help with my motivation. To begin with, I changed my time management in order to balance between study and entertainment. During high school, I had a poor time management. I attended school for seven hours and tutorial classes after school every day. After that, I had to do tons of homework such as book report, essay and assignment. Although it was late after finishing all my work, I surfed the Internet instead of going to sleep. I always thought that I still have much time left, so I procrastinated all the time. I slept only five hours a day, so I fell asleep in class. As I was not concentrated in class, I missed many important points from the teacher.
