Servant leadership is a designation coined by Robert Greenleaf in 1970 in an essay entitled The Servant as Leader. In this essay, he describes the servant leader and a servant first contrary to one who is a leader first. The difference is the servant chooses to put others needs before his own while the leader first may later become a servant from the promptings of a sense of right and wrong or simply because they are coerced in that direction (Greenleaf, 1991).

When applied to leadership the result can be phenomenal. Those who wish to serve do so with their hearts, it is not forced nor is it with resentment. James McGregor Burns was one of the first people to come up with a definition of transformational leadership (Bromley). Transformational leadership is great, but Burns made a quote in his book Leadership that should be recognized, “The aim of leadership is not to just reach a goal, but also transform leaders and followers into better, more self-actualized leaders” (Komives and Wagner). This quote really explains what leadership means to me, not only as a person leading a group, but also learning how to follow as well.
What is a servant leader? A servant leader is a individual that wants to serve first and is selfless. “The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.” (Keith) A servant leader can be anyone in a group setting from a work place, education, religion and cultures. Jesus was a servant leader. He was selfless he died on the cross for our sins. He was selfless and while here on earth was always helping people and teaching the way of the lord.
Servant leadership consists of leaders helping their followers become leaders themselves. The use personal skills such as empathy, compassion and listening to help their followers succeed. It is not necessarily the most popular form of leadership but, it has been proven successful b those leaders who implement it in their work practices. Servant leaders typically have a strong bond with their team. They are the base and the foundation of their teams.
A servant leader is someone, regardless of level, who leads simply by meeting the needs of the team.
Transformational and servant leadership are rooted in the study of charismatic leadership. An early conceptual model of "charismatic leadership" has been closely linked with the work of Max Weber, who described the leader as a charismatic person who exercised power through followers' identification with and belief in the leader's personality. Both transformational and servant leadership are both inspirational and moral.
Over this past semester, VUSM 101 Leading by Serving has taught me about many values. These values include Franciscan Values, Viterbo Values, Servant Leadership, and my own Personal Values. This class also taught me that each person has their own values and those values are what make you unique. These values also influence what gifts a person has. I have discovered that by evaluating my core values, I am able to interpret the gifts that I have received from God and how I will be able to use those gifts throughout my life.
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word authentic means to be genuine or real (Merriam-Webster.com, 2004, p47). Also, according to Merriam-Webster, the term leadership is defined as having the capacity to lead (merriam-webster.com, 2018). Thus, authentic leadership is the act of someone leading others by utilizing his or her own individual style. “Authentic leaders genuinely desire to serve others through their leadership. They are more interested in empowering the people they lead to make a difference than they are in power, money, or prestige for themselves.” (George, 2004, p.12).
Servant leadership was a term that was first used by Keifner Greenleaf(1970) in his first essay, The Servant as Leader (as cited by Crippen, C., 2005). Greenleaf based his essay on his belief that a servant leader is a servant first, and explained that it would begin with the natural urge to serve and then the leader would make a conscious choice to become a leader, in doing so he makes the choice to ensure that others needs are met first (2005 ). As a servant leader develops he should always keep aware of those who he serves and strive to ensure that they are becoming healthier, wiser, freer, have an increase in autonomous, and are become more like servants themselves (2005). Leaders and organizations can use the principles of servant leadership to frame decisions, and service that include focus on the community, care of others and quality services (Waterman, R., 2011). Watermen states that working to higher purpose increases standards, integrity and should lead the followers through supports, shared visions and bring followers together in toward a common purpose to provide service to others.
Greenleaf (1977), in his book, “The role of servant leader” he told that a servant leader should be a servant first. According to him, servant leadership is actually a feel which begins in a person internally and it’s the intrinsic desire to serve others. According to Nyhan (2000), a leader who preferred the employee’s benefits over his own benefits is perfectly playing the role of servant leadership. Servant leadership expresses personal reliability and helping the organizational related members consisting upon employees and customers as well (Liden, Wayne, Zhao & Henderson 2008). Ehrhart (2004), defined the seven aspects of servant leadership. According to him the first aspect of servant leadership is to create relationships with the employees by spending time with them and by filling the gap of communication with them. According to second aspect, the servant leaders should encourage the followers by cooperating with them for example they should consider their opinions and thoughts in every organizational decision. In third aspect he cleared that such leaders helps the employees consequent by giving them opportunities to enrich their skills. For the demonstration of principled values, servant leaders behave morally and follow their promises made with their followers to strengthen the demonstration of values. Such leaders, exhibit their conceptual expertise through daily routine. According to sixth aspect, they place their followers/employees first to enhance their abilities and for their progression. Then, according to last point, the servant leaders create values for workers in external activities by engaging them in community services as well rather than of organizational services. The variable of servant leadership causes an environment of trust among organizational members that, at last, ensures the organizational success (Reinke 2004). I knew a lot about transformational leadership but not much about servant. I always believed that change could be a good thing, but I always wondered what if the people you are trying to help do not want change. I like servant leadership a lot because it focus on the followers, which means the leaders listen to the followers and care to hear their opinions. With transformational leadership, to me I feel that the leaders on care to reach their goals, and just want all their followers to be on board.
