I think that your questioning of these findings is valid. However, I feel in the same way they describe the women in this article. I feel much more secure and confident when I speak in Spanish. I think that it is related to the multiple systems I need to be aware of when I am speaking in English which I don’t need to play much attention to when I speak in Spanish. For example, when I am speaking in English, I am consciously paying attention to my pronunciation, grammar and syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. This much attention I pay to these systems have a detrimental role in my confidence as an English speaker. I don’t think that Spanish as a language makes me a more confident woman, what I believe is that when I am speaking in English I am
more concerned of the prescribed grammar rules in order to be intelligible to the other English speaker. When I speak in Spanish I don’t pay conscious attention of the grammar or pragmatics of what I am saying. I have that unconscious knowledge of what is correct and what is not possible to do with my language. In Spanish I am much more able to use other linguist devices when I am speaking. For example, I can say double-sense comments because I know when they are appropriate or when they aren’t. I can “play” with Spanish and I can create ungrammatical sentences that are perfectly understandable. I cannot use English with such plasticity. I think the differences in Spanish, as my dominant language, and English make me to switch my personality. I am more extrovert when I am speaking in Spanish. Even my conception and understanding of personal space changes. When I am speaking with you, for example, I tend to stay at a longer distance than if I were talking with someone who speak Spanish. When I speak in Spanish I tend to be very close to the person I am talking with, it is like we were touching each other, and I think it is mutual and very difficult for me to explain in this post. It would be very interesting to replicate this study with speakers of other languages and other contexts to see if in other contexts you have the same results.
“Se Habla Español,” is written by a Latin author, Tanya Barrientos; and Amy Tan, a Chinese author, wrote “Mother Tongue”. In both literate narratives the authors write about their experiences with language and how it impacted their lives. In This essay we will be discussing the similarities as well as the differences in the stories and the authors of “Se Habla Español” and “Mother Tongue”. We will discuss how both authors use a play on words in their titles, how language has impacted their lives, how struggling with language has made them feel emotionally, and how both authors dealt with these issues.
“Se habla Espanol” wrote by Tanya Maria Barrientos. She is growing up in Texas, but she was born in Guatemala. That causes she cannot speak Spanish like Latina. In the article, she talked about what the feeling as a Lantana without the ability to speak Spanish so well. Her parents give her a few of knowledge about speaking Spanish. Because, she grew up in a special era, which Mexican Americans were considered dangerous radical. Nowadays, this theory is politically incorrect. The author wants to find some people that like her, does not fit in Spanish culture and help them, giving them a big mental supporting. I’m from China, growing and living in different places, which have different language and culture habit.
There are a lot of similarities and differences in holidays of Spanish-speaking countries and the United States (US) including the types of holidays, dates they are celebrated, and traditions. donQuijote said, “In Spain there are many regional and national holidays which means that there is a Spanish festival or Spanish fiesta being celebrated somewhere in Spain every month of every year. Every town, city and region has its own traditional holidays or Spanish fiestas in honor of a patron saint, founder or important historical event.” (“Spanish Fiestas”.)
Are you tired of the stereotypical lies about Hispanics? Well I’m here to clear that up. Not all Hispanics are Mexican or Immigrants like society has told you. Not every Hispanic is a poor, Spanish speaking Immigrant. Society does not know who you are, unless they know recognize your language, origin, and culture accurately!
While reading this article, one of the most shocking sections was when the students were talking to Monzó and sharing their outlook on their place and their language’s place in society. These students, even at this early age, are feeling how devalued their first language has been. They feel like they have to speak the right* English, only use English in public places, never their first language, and that they must assimilate to the American culture as much as possible. This reminded me of a chapter in Lippi Green (2012)’s text. Within this chapter, Lippi-Green (2012) discusses how in the United States Spanish speakers are not only expected to learn English, but they are expected to learn and utilize the right* English determined by the majority and assimilate entirely to American culture.
Language is an important value for the nationalistic identity of a nation. Hispanic culture is the way of life of people from Latin America and Spain, and their main identifying factor is the fact that they speak Spanish as their main language. Therefore, Hispanics are not necessarily Spaniards but other groups like Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans who speak Spanish are also part of this group (Shaw and Dennison 207). American culture on the other hand is mainly comprised of the people who speak English as their main dialect. Therefore, the Spaniards have Spanish as their native language while the Americans use Englis...
A large number of people in the Hispanic community whether Hispanics are not able to get the English literacy skills that they need not because they want to keep born in Latin America or the United States, speak Spanish primarily. This is basically because in present day time, Hispanics are more likely to pass Spanish to their kids now than they have done in the past. (Ortiz, P.149) This is seen as a social problem, especially because of the fact that there is an increasing demand that English should only be taught in public school and it should also be spoken within the Spanish community. Even though Hispanics do speak a lot of Spanish most of the time, they still do learn English also, especially the young. But, because of the large flow of immigrants, the use of Spanish is used more often because they are constantly encountering immigrants who speak no English. (Ortiz, P. 150) Before hand there has been said to have been lower achievements when Hispanics make frequent use of the Spanish la...
Hispanic America language has some strengths and weaknesses as observed in the article and this makes it one of the influential groups in the United States. It is also important noting that those who belong to this group originated from various parts of the world. The strengths in the pattern of communication make this language one of the most adorable languages in the world as many people feel respected whenever they talk to someone from this particular group. The weaknesses that can be identified only show how people tend to believe they are shy, but it is as a result of respect for
In conclusion, learning English was a challenge when it was first introduced to me, but now I have overcome that challenge. I am able to defend myself in the outside public world of English with no shame at all. I now understand how fortunate I am to know another language different from my own. For me, it is important to still have my first language because it is a way to retain the Mexican culture. It is just the way I was raised to believe.
What is culture? Many people ask themselves this question every day. The more you think about it the more confusing it is. Sometimes you start leaning to a culture and then people tell you you’re wrong or they make you feel like a different person because of your culture. I go through this almost every day. Because of the way I was raised I love Mexican rodeo but I was born and raised in Joliet. This can be very difficult trying to understand culture. I live in this huge mix of culture. Culture is personal. People can have many cultures especially in America and because of globalization. Cultural identity is not one or the other, it is not Mexican or American. Cultural identity is an individual relevant thing.
Mexican Americans have quickly risen to become the majority population in the United States. The Mexican American population has grown so much due to the mass migrations they make from Mexico into the U.S. About 33.7 million Hispanics of Mexican origin reside in the U.S. as of 2012 (Pew Hispanic Center, 2013). Mexican Americans are considered the largest Hispanic origin population, making up two thirds of the whole Hispanic population to reside in the United States. As of 2010, 32 million Hispanics are Mexican American, with 11.7 million immigrants born in Mexico and 22.3 million being born in the U.S. (Pew Hispanic Center, 2013). Today, there are about 52% of Hispanics born in the U.S that have a least
While teaching the Spanish lesson on the months of the year, CJ said an inappropriate word out loud causing disruption in the class. He did that three times, causing the rest of the class to begin to laugh. During the past two weeks, CJ has been acting out in class by making jokes, and laughing on the pronunciations. I have given him time to adjust to the new class, as we only meet every Thursday during the 6th period. However, today his behavior was not acceptable.
Spanish and English may both be widely spoken languages, however English is becoming more and more prevalent as a second language. For this project I interviewed an acquaintance who speaks Spanish as a first language and English as a second language. Spanish and English are similar in aspects such as grammar (in that they are both SVO—subject, verb, object—languages) and vocabulary (since both were influenced by Latin) (Shoebottom n.d.), however they are also quite different, especially in their phonology. These differences are what made learning it as a second language a little more difficult for this interviewee.
