What is profession of arms? You can ask that question to any Soldier and it is a guarantee each Soldier will provide a different answer. In this essay, I will discuss my perception of the profession of arms’ generalized idea, the Army professional culture, the Human Resources sergeant’s role in the Army profession, and the balancing role of the profession.
The Meaning of Profession
According to An Army White Paper The Profession of Arms article, the “professions produce uniquely expert work, not routine or repetitive work” (p.2). This statement is true for many of our Soldiers. Professions are not perfect. In fact, professions might make the most mistakes. However, those mistakes are learning moments and/or experiences instead of seeing such situations as holdbacks. Our Army professions have a self-policing mentality and use experience to make better future decisions. (p.2).
Significantly, having individualistic professions simultaneously translates to the Profession of Arms. Individualistic professions help us understand that although our Profession of Arms calls for lethality with our weapons and operations; our military is cognizant of the different views to avoid implementation of fear or mistrust in our Americans and allies.

HR sergeants are very involved in the built up of other Soldiers becoming professions. HR professionals mentor Soldiers on personal life and career-building matters within and out of the military. HR professionals go through unofficial training on a daily basis with the one goal. The goal of streamlining work. Many HR professionals take it upon themselves to familiarize with other sections for a more effective workforce.
HR professional have many functions. HR professionals do not know everything. They try to learn what could potentially pertain to them. HR professionals make efforts to mentor Soldiers in HR functions. They mentor them to inform them and show them self-efficiency.
The Balancing Role of the Profession’s
The United States Army, in its current state, is a profession of arms. In order to be considered a profession, the organization must have an ethical code rooted in values, strong trust with its clients, and be comprised of experts within the trade. These experts are constantly developing the trade for the present and the future and hold the same shared view of their trade culture.
The Army requires its members to adhere to prolonged training and learn specialized skills. From the moment a soldier transitions from the civilian sector into the Army, he is indoctrinated with training. Regardless of rank, the Army demands each soldier to be technically proficient and mentally competent in order to be qualified in a respective Military Occupation Specialty. As a soldier progresses in his military career, he is required to continue his education and training. Army leaders are expected and required to continue developing their skills through academic studies, operational experience, and institutional training. In order to understand a profession, the Army White Paper gives us clear definitions of “The Profession of Arms” . The profession of arms. The Army is American Professional of Arms, a vacation comprised of experts certified in the ethical application of land combat power, serving under civilian authority, entrusted to defend the constitution and the rights and interests of the American people.
It also seeks to understand the task of the military and what separates the Army from other occupations (Griffiths, 2008). Webster’s dictionary defines the word profession as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. Many Soldiers would not consider the Army as a profession but a way of life. Some think the word profession belongs to everyday jobs like a plumber, mechanic, or doctor. Dr. Don M. Snider stated “the Army is a profession because of the expert work it produces, because the people in the Army develop themselves to be professionals, and because the Army certifies them as such” (Snider, D. Throughout much of recorded history, warfare, sumptuary laws, and class status have incorporated the use of arms and armor into their typical fashion. The Arms and Armor exhibit, which includes the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Arms and Armor Court showcase, is located on the first floor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and it features various types and styles of armor and its related costumes throughout many periods and regions. Although I have seen photographs and illustrations of many of the costumes I observed, the experience of seeing numerous examples of armor in person was very informative and incredible. The minute and intricate detail, the diverse functions, and the worldly outlook made the experience one I would definitely repeat.

Being able to be promoted into an HR position myself, I found out more in depth what the job functions and duties of the HR manager were.
