Does child development matter if it occurs at a home or at a daycare center? To determine which situation is the best, you have to consider both advantages and disadvantages of both homecare and daycare. Some families believe their child develops better socially in a daycare environment, while other families believe stay-at-home parents is necessary for proper nurturing of children. In 1997, National Survey of America 's Families (NSAF) show that 77% of children under five were in the care of non-parental care providers at least part-time (Capizzano, Adams & Sonenstein, 2000).The percentage of working parents has severely increased in recent years; thus, parents need alternative ways of nurturing their children. Daycare creates a safe environment for kids to interact and to mature from one another. For example, studies have shown that daycare experience could reduce the risk of behavioral problems and improve cognitive development (Geoffroy, Marie-Claude; Côté, Parent, & Séguin, 2006). Children develop more properly when they are in an environment where they can socialize with kids around their own age. Contrary, in homecare, the only form of socialization the children experiences is with their parents and siblings. While in daycare facilities, children are exposed to different social groups. Children who shift from home care to daycare are more likely to experience social rejection because of their insecurity around other kids. Thus, daycare experiences can be physiologically challenging for children who tend to be rejected by their peers, who are less socially competent, and who are more likely to have negative interactions with peers (Geoffroy, Marie-Claude; Côté, Parent, & Séguin, 2006). Evidently, it is fundamental for kids to be around other children so they can learn to socialize and not experience rejection when they got out in the real world. Chapter seven of “Making the “Terrible” Twos Terrific” by John Rosemond is about sending your children to daycare. Rosemond believes that if possible one of the parent stays at home for the first three years of life. “The first three years of life constitute the single most critical, precedent-setting developmental period” (Rosemond 207). He also talks about putting your child in a three day or half day daycare. From birth to age two children rely completely on their parents. At age three is the transition time when children learn they are not the center of the universe and this should be taught by the parents.
Childcare programs for six to twelve month infants would be structured differently from a behaviorist and an attachment theorist. Based on each theory and its ideas their programs would be shaped with the child’s best interest in mind but fitted to suit their beliefs and principles. Attachment theorists have a negative view on childcare programs. Their program would encourage that of main caregivers found at home and look to grow other attachments and relationships with others. Behaviorists have a neutral stance when it comes to placing children in childcare. Their program would develop reinforcement theories and practices for children so their behavior can become classically conditioned for future events that may rise. Each program would be designated differently and would vary on the hours spent in daycare, the peer-to-peer interactions, and the developmental skills the theorist would implement.
Imagine waking up everyday in a home where there is nobody you can call mom or dad. Foster care is a system in which a minor has been placed into a ward, group home, or private home of a state-certified caregiver referred to as a "foster parent". The placement of the child is usually arranged through the government or a social-service agency. The institution, group home or foster parent is compensated for expenses. The state will inform through the family court and child protection agency stand in loco parentis to the minor, making all legal decisions while the foster parent is responsible for the day-to-day care of the minor throughout the time the child is in the system.
Single moms are the most affected and providing childcare on campus is very beneficial to them. More than 4 million women attend two-year public institutions or community colleges, and more than 1 million of them are mothers. Many student mothers struggle to stay enrolled all the way through graduation. It is common knowledge that a parent is considered the most efficient caregiver for their children. It’s also known that with daily responsibilities of caring for a child financially, parents partake in full-time and/or part-time employment. While needing to do so, many children attend daycare/preschool facilities. Granted, it is the parent’s responsibility to cautiously select where they decide to take their children. This is because parents know that while they are away for numerous hours of the day, their children are in the hands of another care provider and that their care would have an enormous impact on their children. At a young age, a child’s social and cognitive skills are continuing to take shape and the amount of time spent in these facilities has a resilient impact on a child’s development. With proper and superior care no matter the time spent, such positive effects on a child’s development should endure in a child’s cognitive and social development. Many people do not believe in homeschooling because they do not trust that parents are teaching their children correctly. They argue that parents can’t teach their children without proper training and that without it. They also worry that students will not learn to socialize or function in society and that homeschooling is just a way to hide children from the real world. Children from advantaged families attending child day care recorded a slight positive or negative effect intellectually. While children from what is considered economically disadvantaged families benefited from child day care centre attendances (Belsky & Steinberg). These children recorded higher score results on standard tests when compared to disadvantaged children who do not attend child day care. The child care experience seemed to reduce the low test scores usually associated with disadvantaged population. However standard tests used were considered not enough to predict intellectual development.
